  1. I have an interesting question: is anyone here debating between a PHD is Sociology and a certificate in something else (ex: Gender Studies) or an actual PHD in that certificate area of study? I only ask because I've been on the fence about trying to get into a Sociology PHD program or a Women's Studies PHD program. At my undergraduate institution, the WGS classes were taught by sociologists or historians with WGS certificates. However, my advisor claims that universities are now more likely to hire professors with actual WGS PHDs.
  2. Hello! I will be applying for PHD programs in Sociology this fall. I will be leaving soon for a Fulbright research grant to China, and am focusing on finding programs that have some kind of emphasis on East Asia. From talking with people, I've heard that Johns Hopkins and Indiana have faculty focusing on China, but if anyone has advice, please let me know! It's going to be a fun application season--let's begin!
  3. I'm not sure about the performing arts, but I successfully established my affiliation with my university randomly. I emailed dozens of professors explaining that I wanted to come to their university and work with their department. I was actually surprised at the number of positive responses I received. Another idea is to contact professors at universities that are "off the beaten path." One of the main goals of Fulbright is cultural exchange so some universities might be very excited to host a U.S. scholar (or musician).
  4. CrystalDee--my mom entered the Peace Corps at age 50 and served in Romania. One of her fellow Peace Corps friends was 80 years old. Fulbright is silly to think that age matters.
  5. I received medical clearance last week. I have an anxiety disorder, but my doctor wrote a long paragraph about how it is under control. I emphasize with the nervous and scared part (I don't have any abroad experience). pm me if you want to chat!
  6. Not yet, I don't think. Who's brave enough to start one? I'm already feeling anxious about going!
  7. I am in the fear stage. I think that it is because I have not have the opportunity to travel abroad, and I am rather shy. My academic advisor keeps telling me that a Fulbright will "change you in wonderful ways" and to just go with the flow. I'm hoping that these new experiences will help me become more confident in my research! Just think about it--working with researchers in an international scale! So scary, but so exciting! What scares you right now?
  8. I fell off my bed. I'm a small-town Ohio kid who has never left the country....but....I'M GOING TO CHINA!!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH TO EVERYONE HERE FOR SUPPORT DURING THE LAST FEW DAYS. I NEVER thought this would happen.
  9. Well, it is 75 degrees and sunny in rural Ohio today. I awoke to the gentle sounds of mooing cows. Keep Calm and Carry On, Brave Potential-Fulbrighters!
  10. Thank you so much for calling! Hmmm...it's the already the "middle" of the week... For those of you in limbo: I signed a lease on a apartment yesterday, but negotiated a deal with my landlord that if I get a Fulbright, I will only lose my security deposit. It's been difficult waiting, but sometimes you just have to keep working on your plan B....
  11. Wow! You're brave.... Any China applicants feeling brave enough to contact Johnathan Akeley?
  12. Hmmmm....I just looked at a calender of Chinese holidays and think that May Day is a holiday. However, should that matter if we're getting notifications from New York? Ahhh..confusion!
  13. Okay China. Today is your day. At this point, I just want to free from waiting:)
  14. How about China and Estonia today? That sounds like a nice combination.
  15. That's really interesting! I honestly didn't know about undergrads and research. My school pushes very hard to get a large number of ETAs (which is wonderful), but hasn't had much luck with research grants. Luckily, my sociology advisor this year is from Beijing and was able to help me make my topic less political. I do understand your note about not posting details of your project. One of my majors is Women's Studies and I've been truly trying to promote this field of study. I studied a lot of Chinese feminist theory and would love to learn more about it.
  16. 谢谢你!I was the only student to get recommended for a research Fulbright from my college this year, so it's been a very odd experience waiting to hear back. I proposed studying the effects of government childcare programs and subsidies on women's laborforce participation rates in Hangzhou. I'm very curious about what other people proposed to study in China because my advisor was constantly reminding me not to propose anything remotely controversial or political. haha, ohio! I'm from Canton
  17. Hiya everyone, I'm hoping to check-in with China people. I'm a senior undergraduate from a tiny school in rural Ohio that hasn't had a research Fulbright in years (although about 7 ETA Fulbrights so far for this year). I'm honestly just feeling a bit lonely and looking for support. One of my professors told me yesterday that I should be grateful to get this far because he would never give a research grant to an undergrad. I would love to at least get alternate status to prove him wrong!
