  1. Thank you. Would proofread it for the 3456734th time and fix the grammatical errors. English is not my first language though but would use a dictionary to try fix it up if need be. Thanks a lot for your reply. I am grateful.
  2. Thanks for the encouragement. Yes, I have read the book. It was one of the readings in two Social network analysis classes I took online and I read it on both occasions. Any comments on the document it self?
  3. Hello kind people. Once again thanks for taking time out to read version one of my statement of research. I took to your corrections and made my research interest more specific. Can you please kindly critique the updated version of my Statement of Research Interests (pdf). Thanks for your help.
  4. Thanks for taking time to read and reply. I would make the necessary corrections. Thanks!
  5. Hello, Please can someone kindly help proofread and critique my Statement of Research Interests (pdf). I am applying for Masters and the school asked for it not Statement of Purpose nor Personal Statement. Thanks for your time.
  6. Your profile is very much above average. I guess it's your SOP that you need to work on. Try getting some few tips on how to write a good SOP.
  7. I've not started grad school yet but right now I take two cups of coffee in the morning and a cup of green tea when I come back from work. The coffee keeps me alert through the day and helps with my work (coding). Hopefully I would drop the habit when I start grad school because I would do less coding and more reading.
  8. Is it highly important that the LORs come from a professor in America because all my LORs are from Nigeria (the head of Department, another professor in the Dept. and my present boss where I work). Hope that would carry some weight.
  9. Thanks a lot for that. The reason why I have not yet registered for GRE is that UBC doesn't need it but if I say a university whose school fees is arounf $10,000 per year, has funding for international students and needs GRE, heck, I would write the exam immediately (I have been practicing for months). I checked Toronto's fees and it was something like $27,000 for a year. That's pretty expensive for only tuition. Would rather apply to a School in the US if I could pay that.
  10. Hello, I'm also planning fall of 2014. I'm considering only one school, UBC because of their funding for international students and the research work of their Data mining group. Would be writing TOEFL next month No GRE because UBC doesn't require it CGPA of second class upper (i guess that's a 3.3 - 3.6 on the US scale) 2 years of work experience as software developer No research paper nor research work Interested in Data mining and Social Network Analysis Please I would appreciate suggestions of Universities that have good funding for International Students and not to expensive school fees just like UBC. Thanks!!!
  11. Hello! I just finished my undergraduate studies this year (february) with a GPA of 3.5 (on a scale of 5) from one of the best universities in Nigeria (Obafemi Awolowo University) in Computer Science with Maths and I'm planning to start my masters in Information Management in the fall of 2014. I have special interests in Social Networks, Data Mining and Network Visualizations. I have been doing a lot of "research"about graduate school in the US or UK. Infact I visit the website of my dream school (iSchool, University of Michigan) almost every day since I graduated reading everything there . I've got some few questions and I need some advice please. Firstly, do US universities reckon with degrees from African Universities especially Nigerian Universities because the standard of education here is very low when compared to Universities in developed nations? Secondly, my GPA is average at most (because converting it to a scale of 4 which is used in most US universities, it becomes 2.8). Most of the schools I hope to apply to state a GPA of 3.0. I have read that a good GRE and LOR helps those with average GPA's but I guess that's for those who graduate from reputable schools. Please correct me if i am wrong. I also learnt that publishing research papers would also give you and edge or working in a research lab. Errrmmmm, I live in Nigeria and research is not as common as it is in other nations. Research labs barely exist and the system of education does not really support research because there is little or no funding for Universities. I wrote a paper to be published in the Journal for Social Computing and it was turned down with horrible comments . What I basically do as a hobby is mine tweets and create network diagrams of followers (I just love creating and visualizing networks). I have great interersts in anything Networks and Graphs but no "official research" to show for it. Is that also an handicap to my application? I have some work experience. I was an Intern for 6 months in a software firm as an undergraduate and I'm presently working as a software developer in the same firm now that I have graduated (i feel lucky in a country where employment rate is 43%. That shows how hard it is to find a job here ). Looking forward to some advice and answers Thanks!
