Did anyone hear anything from anywhere? ;)

I had a skype call with my POI at UC Davis but then got an e-mail saying that even though I was a "top contender" they invited someone they felt better fit in with the program and faculty. :( Hopefully you guys are doing better!

Unfortunately I haven't heard from anyone... Preparing myself for straight rejections ?

    @east-coast-girl I know... right?

Although, I checked postings of result from the last two years of penn state's HDFS and I found the same pattern. One early acceptance around the middle of December and more acceptance in the middle of January - February. If they still have the same admission mechanism, I think more decisions will be handed out in January until February.

Where else are you applying for HDFS if you don't mind sharing?

I looked into the previous years too, which made me feel a little better (but I'm still casually freaking out now).

Penn State is actually the only HDFS program I applied to.  I also applied to Wisconsin-Madison (Developmental Psych), Vanderbilt (Quant Psych), and UNC-Chapel Hill (Quant Psych).

  3. I've had this happening to me last year. She was not answering my emails, then she was busy grading the finals (yes, it took her all that time to the finals week!). I ended up not being accepted at the universities she sent her recommendation at and getting offers from other universities where I've had the best idea of asking another professor for recommendation only because she was so darn late. Was this a pure coincidence or she plainly sent weak (not wanting to think about any negative) letters to those universities? The other 2 recommenders were the same for all the applications.

No, badger her!  It's for your future after all :-)

"Hey there, just checking in to see if you had any problems submitting the letter this past weekend, and let me know if I can help in any way."

Thankfully she finally emailed me and let me know that she sent in the recommendation!! And I got the update that all of my materials are in the system! Let the waiting commence! Eek!

  4. I asked my past professors to write me a letter of recommendation due by Oct 1st (by mail) and I asked them about the letters in August.  They all happily obliged.  The first two writers got right on top of submitting the letters and the third told me she would email me when she mailed the letter.  I emailed her last week just to check in and make sure she was still onboard and she said she would do it this past weekend.  I have no idea if she sent in the letter and I really don't want to badger her about it, but the not knowing is driving me nuts! AUGHHH.

  5. Is anyone else having a hard time telling their advisors? I'm a work-study in the department my research mentor is in and even though I have seen him almost every day in the last week, I just can't find it in me to tell him, even though I know he won't freak out or anything. I just totally feel like I let him down. Is that odd?

I received my first official rejection this morning and I'm terrified to tell my professors because I don't want to disappoint them.  Two of them are rooting for me so hard to get accepted to programs and I'm afraid I'm going to be shut out everywhere.  ):

  6. I was put on the short-list (aka wait list) for one of the schools that I had a phone interview with (pretty bummed because I really liked their program). Got word earlier today that I have an interview in a little over a month at another school and I still have to figure out what to do with the program that had an on-campus interview I couldn't attend.

This process is making me nuts.

  7. Hmm. Has anything been posted on the results board that would indicate that people have been invited to an on-campus interview?

Two of the schools that I applied to both stated that they had their committee meetings on Friday; maybe you'll hear later on today? If not I would send an email to your POI.

    Good luck!

Nothing really on the results board, but the POI gave me their general timeline and when I should hear back from them during my phone interview.

I'm probably going to hold off on emailing until next week because, as one of my professors pointed out, my whole state has had bad weather this week so that is probably impacting the timeline I had received earlier.  Still incredibly nerve-wracking though, the waiting is driving me insane!

  8. I was supposed to hear back from a school sometime this week to see if I would be selected for their on-campus interviews (after having a phone interview).  So far I haven't heard anything from them and I am starting to freak out!  I really liked their program and the POI.

  9. What happens when you can't attend interview weekend?  I thought the interviews are still a part of the evaluation process.  I heard that last year one of my schools only accepted 5 out of the 12 people they invited.

I know one of the schools I was talking to said that if a person cannot attend on-campus interviews then they will do Skype interviews instead.  However, I haven't heard anything definite from the school that I cannot attend their on-campus interviews.  I think it really depends on the particular school.

  10. Last week two of the schools I applied to contacted me for interviews!  I had a phone interview yesterday and I cannot attend the in-person interview for the other school.  I'm excited to see where all of this is heading (and hopefully I'll start hearing from other schools soon!)

  11. 1) My dad is in the military and has been for a number of years and my mom used to work full-time until she was laid off a number of years ago but neither have degrees past high school.  One of my sisters went to a state school for a semester before she dropped out and then earned her RN at a community college and just recently completed her BSN online; none of my other siblings have degrees.

    2) I am the first in my family to go to college (and stay in college) and probably wouldn't have been able to go to school without having my schooling completely paid for (thank God!).  Overall, I had to overcome the fierce doubts that my father had about me being successful in school.

    3) As a first-generation student I have done extremely well in school (I will be graduating in May, probably with honors).  I was accepted for two consecutive years on a research team in my department.  In addition, I also have been able to have jobs as a tutor and a teacher's assistant.

    4) My professors have been amazing and completely believe in me and my success.  I, honestly, would not have done as well as I have without having some of my professors there to believe in me and help me through this process (especially applying to grad school).  Also, in general, I have always loved learning so I definitely have a huge passion for what I am doing.
  12. The disaster continues with one of the applications saying it doesn't have my GRE scores (which I sent in advance as well).  Why can't grad school apps be a smooth process?  I'm hoping the missing GRE scores and miss transcripts are due to an overwhelming amount of paperwork on their part and doesn't mean they don't actually have my stuff.  Trying to remain calm but it's hard when that's one of my top schools. Sigh.

  13. My application that requires my official transcript says they don't have them... Trying not to freak out and hoping it is just a fluke and will be updated by tomorrow morning.  I sent out my transcripts about a month in advance because I was afraid they wouldn't make it there on time (plus I've dealt with schools who refuse to do their job and send the transcripts).

  14. I have my first three applications due on the 1st of December and I am freaking out!  I just need to pull together the finalized versions of my personal statements and submit the applications.  The fact that application deadlines are so soon is completely terrifying and enthralling.
