  1. Congratulations to everybody who received an acceptance the last days - and thanks to everybody who shared stats and other information (special thanks to those who reported rejections - brave folks - it is greatly appreciated). Compared to last year the week was quite active, right? Wonder what is going to happen next week Wish you all a nice Sunday
  2. nah that wasn´t what I meant. It was just one post and, so far, no one claimed it (would be quite early) - so it it not real yet
  3. Taken from recent years - if you don´t get an interview you are rejected. And the interviews seem to be send out all at once. Or, anyone got different information?
  4. Anyone claiming the Rutgers Interview? Seems pretty early, or? Ahh, guess we will know soon
  5. Congrats! Must be a relief. And thanks for posting - did you add to the results?
  6. So far we have: No Rejections Interviews at University of Virginia, Rice University and Notre Dame (all claimed) Acceptances at University of California Davis (4, some claimed) and University of California Los Angeles (1, early, not yet claimed) Just to keep this thread updated.
  7. Congratulations! All Davis applicants up early today?
  8. You have quite a positive attitude - I would have added: and Rejections
  9. And University of Virginia comes up at the result search
  10. Hard to tell I think you sound great (on paper ) I have also applied to Binghamton ... what is the ASPECT program? (looked it up - sounds also very interesting)
  11. "And the other day you made me a smoothie!" But nice to hear that your visit went well - again: good luck!
  12. Hey - there are some programs with February deadlines I am looking at and one program (MA) has an April deadline. I applied to some of the programs we discussed (see you there ) but I also scratched programs off my list - NYU for example pretty sure I would not stand a chance to get in there. I also checked the results page for hints off when to expect results and most of my programs answer in late February or March. By the way, someone just posted a notice from NC State that they had 80 applicants - that does not sound a lot, or? I mean I have no way of comparing that number, but ...?
  13. And more: You should have known that ... is about to retire in two years, ... is on a sabbatical and that ... has offers from other universities and is likely to accept - but we refuse to update our website (since 2010). On a a related note: we refuse to answer any email requests. WE ARE FACULTY! WE ARE BUSY!!!
  14. Congrats on being done! I am sure ADD MOST COMMON QUOTE FROM I still have three applications to go - but I will wait another week or so before I get back to them. By the way - this might be the week the first schools send out results!? But none of those I applied to
  15. I agree with the points that were made and some of the twitter posts are pretty funny (My favorite: I have many misconceptions but am willing to waste the rest of my 20s helping keep your Ponzi scheme going). None the less 'the realities' are narrated in a pretty one sided way and only few show hints of self humor or self irony. What is about universities taking students with poor fits, due too high scores or high reputation of a persons undergrad university or due to the high reputation of letter writers (all mentioned diverse times on this board, for example (taken from the adcomm thread (great thread)): we could not accept students who would have been a perfect fit and would have been great in our department, due to too low scores for our amazing department.). Or what about not making the admission process more transparent and so make it easier to conform to the demands. Or what about being in charge of the admission process, the undergrad education (don´t know about that - studied abroad), the preparation for grad school etc. and structuring it in such a poor way that they themselves complain about it (related: why are so few departments doing interviews if it is all about fit). I mean it is just pretty easy to turn the perspective around and make a truthfulgradadmissioncommittee twitter thing. For example: We are happy to welcome you as a student - you are a perfect fit! And of course we know, that we are unable to recruit more qualified candidates. Or: You are too bad for our PhD program, but we would gladly take your money for our Masters program, where we do not care about you and promise to not prepare you for a PhD. (yes, one sided and untrue) But than again - twitter might not be the right place for reflections on one´s own behavior, but just a place for quick laughs. That´s fine with me
  16. First of all: I received helpful and encouraging feedback from many other applicants - thanks for that! Moreover, I am uncomfortable with the explanation of Loric. Sure, competition might play a role, but I would not assume that this is the main or only reason. As mentioned above, people have a lot do - deadlines on top of work or finishing up the final projects of the semester, etc. People might simply not find the time or the nerve to participate as much as they did a month ago. And regarding giving advice: I think that many applicants, especially first time applicants, are careful with the advice they give, since they are not sure how accurate it actually is. So, competition is not the only possible reason... And on a different note, I like to question the edge someone is gaining by not participating in interactions with his peers and occasionally offering help. This seems like a misguided folk model of rational choice - the myth of the information edge And to answer Socgirl´s question, how everything is going - I have applied to three schools so far... still working on 5 or 6 more.
  17. Hello - anybody interested in giving feedback on my writing sample? I am an international applicant and besides the worries that my word choice is odd etc. I was wondering if my writing sample is comparable to a term paper in the US regarding depth of theoretical discussion, used literature, empirical investigation and many other details - like overuse of footnotes in comparison to the US and other stuff I have overheard ... So, if anybody would be willing to clarify some things for me, it would be greatly appreciated You can PM me for the writing sample.
  18. And the third one: since the drum would be filled in 32h without a leak and it should take 96h - three times as long - it would take that long if only one third would go in, or if 2/3 would leak out - so 2/3 of 2 should leak out - 1 and 1/3. But just an idea
  19. I guess the second one is 14(s)+12® is 26. Because they are both primes and all other solutions would be fractions and no integers, or?
  20. Hey - I try the first one - this comes to my mind: The rectangular would look like two rows of 4 cubes or one line of 8 cubes, right? OOOO or OOOOOOOO OOOO So there are 8 cube sides on the front and 8 on the back; there are 4 cube sides along the top and the bottom and two cube sides on each short side. That makes 28 cube sides. These cube surfaces add up to the surface area of the rectangular - 8 of these 28 could be blue - so max fraction 8/28 - 2/7. 2 parts of 7 of the surface area could be blue max Or there are 8+8+8+8+1+1 cube sides which add up to 34 cube sides which make up the surface area and so to 8/34 or 4/17. Or am I following some crooked logic?
  21. Thank you Gilbert! Interesting insight into the american university life. And I will heed your advice and focus on the CV and the SOP. Have fun in New York and thanks!
  22. Hey all, I am also going to apply for Fall 2014 and it is a world of trouble! The whole process seems to be so competitive (everybody has some publications, teaching experience or else) and I get the feeling, that a lot of the things, which are requested, are even more difficult to deliver for a foreign student. Just for example: I am really looking forward to the responses of my potential LOR writers when I tell them, that they have to send the LOR to 12 addresses with prior registration and with different requirements for the letters. No one ever asks them for such things here - well, maybe they think its new and exiting And actually all they can write is: he took several of my courses regarding this and this, worked very well, active in discussions, good term papers, not too annoying, think he might be a strong PhD candidate. Especially if I read things like: got amazing LORs, or mediocre/honest appraisal will be seen as 'damn with faint praise'. And of course there is more, like translating term papers (the first publication in Germany is usually the PhD Thesis; co authorship practices between students and professors are still almost non existent), my BA thesis, or research reports as writing examples, getting the test preparation done without freaking out, writing my SOP (which I consider the most interesting part) and wondering how I am going to pay for my applications. However - I will be bound to the area around Philadelphia and New York, so my choices are: CUNY, NYU, New School, Columbia, the Penns, Princeton, Maryland, Stony, Temple, JH, Rutgers and the UD. Did I miss any interesting programs in this area? Regarding my prior experience I might fit into any work and gender, health, sociological theory or culture-science programs. My GPA should be around 4.0, but I have to pay WES for official stats and will see than. The GRE might go well and the last training tests were around 160 for both, what would be OK for most universities - I guess. But I still have time to study, so maybe Next step for me is to contact some of the programs and see if I can get some more information or contact with potential advisors. And of course practicing English spoken, written and mental. By the way - anyone with knowledge about how admissions committees will respond to changes of subjects and programs, or interruptions to work during the undergraduate education? And so to a prolonged study time? Cheers everybody. And currentgrad: +1; lesliedtofit: +1
