  1. One possible gamble is that the school believes your characterization of their program is incorrect - and thus - feels that you don't know their department well, and from that - making you a bad fit. Whereas if one were to simply give an exposition of their interests, the applicant would purely let the department decide if they were a good candidate.
  2. Has anyone heard back from Syracuse? I was accepted to CGU as well! What have you heard about the program?
  3. Precisely. Sorry if I was unclear.
  4. No - I received an email inviting me today. They didn't offer to pay for it though.
  5. I'm sure this question has been addressed before, but I'll ask it anyway: How does one go about finding a MA program's placement record (as in, what doctoral programs their MA students end up)? It typically seems like the only info departments post is on where their doctoral students end up teaching. I assume you are all just emailing departments? Thank you - this information is very helpful. I am really starting to feel as if their "negative reputation" comes from a history of funding blunders.
  6. Well - even if they don't offer funding when I get to the PhD level I feel like doing my MA at NS would help land a funded spot somewhere else.
  7. Who do you email about planning these visits? An assistant director or something?
  8. Although they don't seem to get much love on these boards (I think mostly because of funding concerns), I'm pretty excited about the offer I received from New School's philosophy department.
  9. Would those be good places to look for people going to the New School of Social Research? I haven't been to NYC since I was a kid and have been looking through the most recent pages of this topic and it seems like Brooklyn and Queens are the places to live for NSSR. Seems like the commute would be somewhere around 30 mins. My partner and I could probably be fine with a 1 room place.
  10. What kind of schools are doing that? Do you think it'll grow? I know UF has a program in religion and ecology, but I didn't know that it was a hot topic.
  11. U of Chicago is one of my top choices, actually. One of my professors got his Phd from there and really enjoyed the experience. Claremont is my top choice, actually. But I highly doubt I would be able to attend, due to their funding problems. jdharrison, I see you around here often - and the blog you write for - and you insight often seems really useful. If you think of any other programs that you or some of your colleagues went to and could recommend, let me know!
  12. Oh wow - I didn't notice that. Thanks for pointing that out, Yetanotherdegree. I've stopped looking into it any further. Body Politics - no, not really. I'm actually not on the West Coast right now. Ideally, I'm looking for Masters programs that lean strongly into philosophy (my BA will be in philosophy). I'm looking for something that at least has its feet wet into continental philosophy of religion. I can go more specifically into my interests if it'd help. But, broadly - continental philosophy of religion. Anyway, I was looking into this school because I saw it was attached to The Other Journal and it was advertised on a site I frequent. I couldn't find much information on it - I know it's small and kind of new. I figured I needed some second tier schools - schools that might be more likely to offer more funding and such, which is why I was looking into schools that weren't the usual suspects.
  13. Hey there - I've lurked these forums for a few months but decided to finally make an account so I can ask this question. I've been looking into different grad schools lately and came across this small grad school - The Seattle School of Theology and Psychology. After looking into it a bit, it seems like it's a pretty continental / postmodern Christian type place - which is good. That being said - does anyone know anything about it? Here's the site. I feel like it's probably not a great choice since my plan is to move into a PhD after my MA, but I don't know much about their programs - so I thought I would ask here first!
