  1. I was accepted with funding for PhD. I will most likely turn it down. I will probably write them by the end of the week. Maybe that will free up some funds? Best of luck!
  2. The PhD USF visit was last week. I went, and it was really great. I do suggest visiting if you can. It is a very beautiful campus and I arrived early so I could sit in on more classes. Message me if you want to talk more about it or if you have questions maybe I can answer. I got a really good vibe from the program, because it is so new the profs are really interested in seeing students succeed.
  3. I haven't heard anything either. As anyone heard from Georgia State? These are the only two programs I haven't heard from and would really like to make my decision.
  4. @blackbloc USF accepted 5 students for the fall. They only ever accept 4-5. 3 of us where there. Two men, one who studied migration and sexuality(international student) and one who studies race, culture, and gender and sex and me (sexuality, disability, social movements). Your international? Many of their students are, out of the ones I met probably about a third (from many different places). It is a stunning campus. Probably the most beautiful campus I have ever been on! The department was wonderful and students bright (I say in on two classes). My other options as of now (I am still waiting to hear from others) are University of Oklahoma and University of Delaware (which hasn't sent out official offers but I was invited to their recruitment). I am now having the dilemma of choosing programs. UD is certainly the "better" school. But USF felt right, USF, however, is so new they arn't ranked and there only now is their first cohort going on the job market. It's a risk because the outcomes are even more unclear then at other programs. But most of the students that are at USF choose there over "higher ranked" programs. I asked why, everyone said it was the fit, the feel, and the mentoring. I hope this helps your decision process. Feel free to message me if you want to know any specifics about the visit.
  5. @meowth I am at USF right now for their visitation (PhD). Last night I arrived early and sat in on a class with one of my POIs and it was fantastic. Small class and the students were engaged and bright. And POI was really great! I suggest visiting campus it's probably the most beautiful campus I have ever set foot on (coming from north east cost schools and Texas gradschool) It is a qualitative program, they won't even pretend to be quantitative (which is good for me). And then faculty are doing amazing work. However, the PhD program is new (6 or so years) so there is no job placement history and it's un-ranked. It's a risk. It could be one that pays off. It's probably not such a big risk for your MA. But I am having a very hard time making this decision because I absolutely love it here but I know it's a little risky. Good luck. Hope this could help.
  6. YAY! Awesome! I am still waiting on the email with details (as flying out of nowhere, Texas is a little complicated).
  7. Congrats! I got the same call today! I guess I will be seeing you again soon! It sounded to me that it was an unofficial acceptance. I asked the DGS to explain the process further and he told me that it is not like a reality TV show, it's not competitive, this meeting is only to introduce us to the department and to make sure we are still interested in studying what our application indicated. March 2-4th right?
  8. I have been told you have two options as far as job placement and publication possibilities: 1) top ranking school, or a school with a big name. 2) go to a place where there is a prof that you want to work with. I have applied to programs of many different rankings by looking at their specializations and falculty that are publishing with grad students that specialize in my area. Also it depends what you want in a program. For me I applied to many "lower" ranked schools due in part to the publications coming out of them in my area. I guess if you study something rather specific it's easier to decide.
  9. Meowth I keep trying to quote you and write but it's not letting me do it on my phone. Anyway I haven't heard from them yet, but I know they are still considering people. I have been in contact with the department and was told that they are still considering me and will have a decision with in the next week. I have an MA and applied to the PhD.
  10. From profs: "You only need one" From friends from undergrad: "God, I wish I was still in college"
  11. That sounds really interesting! I will try to stop by.
  12. I believe that means that it has been through the grad school and is now at the department.
  13. Thanks! What is the title of your presentation? I was hoping to see the race and media panel anyway!
  14. Does it say anything else? Mine says submitted as well but it also says "under committee review". So I am unsure if that means I am still in the running or not.
  15. That is Very exciting! She is! I am interested in Gender and Sexuality and social problems, so she wouldn't be my top choice POI there but I would def still love to work with her!

  18. That is awesome! Congrats! Anyone else hear about Northeastern, UCSB, University of Florida, or UCSC?
  19. Same here! Still waiting to hear from them! My online status still says under committee review. When do you think it's safe to assume rejection?
  20. I am presenting at SWS this weekend and at ESS. What are the titles of your papers?
