Opinions on the Doctor of Social Work?
xXIDaShizIXx replied to xXIDaShizIXx's topic in Social Workers Forum
Thank you guys. It does seem to be helpful to the people that obtain it. The people that don't seem to gripe about it though, due to the cost. -
Look at this program: https://msw.usc.edu/academic/doctor-social-work/ What is the point in degrees like this? I'm not sure it adds much to someone who already has policy and social work education and/or experience. What are your guys' thoughts on the program?

MSW v. MPP/MPA: Social Policy/admin/leadership
xXIDaShizIXx replied to CCD2016's topic in Social Workers Forum
I may be a little odd in that I am in a MSW/MPA/MPP program. I get to share credits so it is only 2.5 years and have scholarships and TA money covering the tuition. I feel that all of the degrees serve their purposes. I currently work in human services for a state government and the majority of the courses I have taken so far are directly related to my chosen profession. I would definitely say that the MPP has been the least necessary program, but both the MPA and MSW are invaluable for my field. Are you specifically wanting to go into a Nonprofit/Non profit management? -
Executive Programs - Certified Program Manager
xXIDaShizIXx replied to xXIDaShizIXx's topic in Government Affairs Forum
Thanks for your reply. I was thinking the same thing. It does not really seem necessary and personally I would rather be working instead of in a classroom setting anymore. They do pay you overtime for attending thought so that is nice -
Hello, I was wondering what your guys' opinion on the Doctor of Social Work was? Specifically for someone that works in human services for the government, would there be a reason to pursue such a degree? Are do you think that the DSW is just a marketing ploy for those that want a doctorate?

Ph.D. in Conflict Analysis & Resolution
xXIDaShizIXx replied to xXIDaShizIXx's topic in Government Affairs Forum
You are absolutely right. I don't think that it would really change anything. Would a DPA be a useful degree to pursue? Just trying to bolster my resume for Upper Management positions. -
What do you guys think about the Valdosta State University Doctor of Public Administration? Is the degree useful for someone that works in government and may want to adjunct at the local state university or is it a waste of money?

Best States to Live in After Graduate School?
xXIDaShizIXx replied to xXIDaShizIXx's topic in Officially Grads
I completely agree. Hoping to get back that way eventually! -
I was wondering what you guys think about the Ph.D. in Conflict Analysis & Resolution that is offered by Nova Southeastern University: http://cahss.nova.edu/doctoral/conflict-analysis-phd/index.html Would it be beneficial to someone like myself that will already have a MSW, MPA, and MPP in a middle level social services administration position? It is fairly pricey at $990 per credit hour.

I think this may just be in California. There are at least 3 states that I know of that don't require anything more than a bachelor's degree.

Should I retake the GRE? Please help
xXIDaShizIXx replied to MH2's topic in Government Affairs Forum
I agree with this OP. The GRE is not everything and your scores are competitive. -
I agree with this as well. Focus on making yourself look good, if it does come up, be prepared with an answer, not an excuse as to why it happened and what you learned from it.

Usage of Calculus in Your MPP/MPA Courses

I agree as well. It does help, but not a huge a necessity unless you want to pursue doctoral level study. -
Usage of Calculus in Your MPP/MPA Courses
xXIDaShizIXx replied to Ben414's topic in Government Affairs Forum
I've actually had a few relatives go into this type of work and seriously a strong grasp of statistics and algebra and you'll be fine. -
I agree with this. It definitely helps to list your volunteering experience. It was talked about in my admissions interview and was talked about when I was hired for the government agency that I work for.

Usage of Calculus in Your MPP/MPA Courses

I agree with this as well. I believe most that have a MPA/MPP obtained it to either put them in an administrative position or help them with their administrative responsibilities. -
Best States to Live in After Graduate School?
xXIDaShizIXx replied to xXIDaShizIXx's topic in Officially Grads
Fair enough. I just meant, say you were able to find several places which place would be the best in terms of the friendliness of the people? I know that can be a relative topic to the person answering, but still worth getting some perspective on. -
So what states do you guys think are the best to live in after graduate school? Which states / cities are the friendliest and which are the worst?
-
Take it.
-
I have noticed that academically no one cares about them, but questions did come up about them during my interviews with state agencies.
-
Just to give you a little hope OP, there is a lady at my office (I work for a state agency and attend graduate school full time) that did not receive her MSW until she was almost 50. She had 4 children and was married. You've got this! Good luck!

Decent GPA and Does It Matter
xXIDaShizIXx replied to GradSchoolNooby's topic in Coursework, Advising, and Exams
I agree with this as well. Unless you are going for a Ph.D. it matters even less. But on the other hand, just because you can graduate with a 2.5 GPA doesn't mean you shouldn't strive for higher in the sense that it could be the difference in you or someone else getting hired. -
Nothing guys?
