I know it's tough but keep your head up. Things will work themselves out, and you will do great work in the academy.

Congratulations! Columbia has an outstanding history program. I am so sorry to hear about the boyfriend, but I believe you have things placed this chapter of your life into the proper perspective. I, too, understand the issues relating to family/spousal employment that accompany moving to a new city. My wife is a tenured professor at a local community college where we live. I tried to pick schools that made sense not only in terms of academic/research fit, but also in terms of our ability to make a transition away from the place we currently reside, if necessary. As of right now, things look good for us and I am sanguine about our chances to make a collective and smooth transition into a new environment. We also have a daughter who'll be three in September and will likely start pre-school this Fall. And there's a good chance that we'll look to add an addition to our family, which seemingly complicates any choice we make. These are not easy issues to deal with, and we have grappled with them for some time. The University of Michigan works well because of proximity (we currently reside in Ann Arbor). We have come up with some plans that I think will help us to be able to make the move, if necessary, whether it is to New Haven, CT, or to Columbus, OH. These matters are never easy and all you can do is hope to make a joint decision that will be best for all parties involved.

Thanks so much! Thank you. Yes, Yale is the only African-American studies program to which I applied. My area of focus is 20th century African-American social history with an emphasis on northern race relations (via the intersection of race and sports). I agree with you on Yale--it is a great program, and any of us would be both ecstatic and honored if we are able go gain admission. On the other hand, we recognize that applying to Yale is like playing the lottery. You could be wasting your dollar, or in this case $95. But then again, you could end up gaining millions, or in this case, admission into arguably the best program available in your field. So, I put $95 into the hat, and I am praying that I get in.

Well, I found out about 45 minutes ago that I was accepted into Ohio State. I am stoked!!! I had wondered for a while because my application status had been changed from "evaluation" to "academic review" to the much-ambiguous "referred" status about two and a half weeks ago. But I left it alone not wanting to be too presumptuous. I finally worked up the fortitude to call today after seeing that so many people had called and been informed of their status. Well, I was told I was admitted a while ago and should have received the information from the graduate school. I have been admitted with full funding for four years with an option for a fifth plus a nice stipend each year. I am also up for a university fellowship that will prevent me from having to teach in my first few years. This is absolutely great news! So, now I must sit back and wait to hear from Yale (African-American Studies/History) and Michigan (History; American Culture). But it is at least great knowing that I have a place to conduct doctoral work.

I actually figured it was you. I remember you had not heard from Yale when all the rejections were announced. Congratulations! And, yes, Yale has deep pockets. Great place!

Congrats to the individual who has been accepted into Yale's MA in History program! I know you may be disappointed about not getting into the PhD program, but you still have an opportunity that could lead to you gaining admission into the doctoral program. Speaking of which, is it just me or does Yale offer some of the best packages? I mean that sort of tongue-in-cheek as we all know that Yale, even in this economic downturn, has tremendous resources that allow for the institution to support its graduate students. But when you can give a full tuition remission and a $20K stipend to a MA student, that's significant. I know PhD programs at top insitutions that do not offer packages as good as this one.

I have heard a number of responses. The two most popular are as follow: It's an indication you have been recommended for admission by the department, and have been referred to the graduate school for approval (a formality to insure that you meet the basic requirements for admission). I have also heard that it indicates that you have been admitted, but they have now referred your application to the graduate fellowship council for funding purposes. Maybe someone with more intimate knowledge of the admission process at tOSU can offer some more legitimate insight.
