  1. That's so awesome!! Congratulations!!
  2. amen to that amen. try going to hopkins, the pressure-cooker mothership of all cut-throats (SERIOUS caveat emptor to people going there next year who will have to deal with TA'ing the undergrads)
  3. hahahah subrosa you are actually so wise - saving the "get to move your partner free card". It's tough though - one person before in this thread brought up the fact that I *am* only 20 and shouldn't stress out that much about this, but it's a sort of sticky sitch because my boyfriend is a bit older (28), finished his MA last year (in labor relations and poli sci and is now looking for union jobs). Not so many union jobs in New Haven as in Boston for him, ergo he's annoyed I didn't get into Harvard. He's also kind of at the "settling" age - he's super-homey and really wants to move in together and get engaged eventually and have lots of bebes (and he sees all his friends getting married and settling). Was your partner in Boston (just guessing from the time distance)? It's the sort of commute we're looking at.
  4. Omigosh! Columbia? That's amazing. Serious congrats!!!
  5. Alright. I'm gonna go ahead and assume that I've been rejected from Columbia. Last year everyone heard on the same day, so I'm guessing that if we haven't heard by now we don't have a spot. Boo.
  6. I know what you mean about the long term dream being realized, but I worry about - after grad school - if I were to, again, have to move somewhere completely random because it's where I got a position and he could not move with me. I've seen it with my parents - mom teaches at UToronto and dad was at Brown, and it's just SUCH a miserable life, esp. once you have kids. Arghh academia!!!
  7. Hey guys, wanted to start a thread about a problem I'm sure a lot of us are dealing with when it comes to moving around to different schools and parts of the country next year. How are you all managing so far with moving your families and husbands/wives/girlfriends/boyfriends around, especially in a time when it's so economically difficult for our significant others to find new jobs in a new place? Are many of you planning to do long-distance things? Personally, I had been planning on moving in with my boyfriend next year (we're pretty much engaged to be engaged) but now that it seems I'm going to be in New Haven instead of a larger city like Boston or NY, it's 100x harder for him to find a job anywhere near me. Anyway, wanted to open up discussion on how everyone is dealing with this, as well as asking advice from people in general - it's tough. Cheers!
  8. uhm, noodles. didn't you already ask us this:
  9. A little birdie told me that we're going to hear from Columbia on Thursday or Friday if we're in the admitted student group
  10. hahahahaha i wonder yeah, i think i may end up doing this (though im waiting to see what columbia says). anyone spent a significant amount of time in new haven before? i've heard it's not a great place to live (boyfriend very ambivalent about moving there), but i hope that i'll be proved wrong!!
  11. awwww thank you so much kai!! (it was me). yeah, i was a little disappointed about the doctoral program, but im just coming out of college anyway so it will be nice to have the extra language prep (japanese) before going into a ph.d. and yeah... im too am a little amazed by yale's deep pockets.
  12. last one i'm waiting for is columbia!
  13. yeah... i have a few friends in grad school at UofT and their tuition is not more than $8000 i believe (and as the person above me said, international tuition is definitely not that much more than that)..
  14. Toronto's a great place though! I grew up there (and my mother teaches there) - it's just beautiful!!
