  1. If you want to continue a line of communication (just to keep yourself on their radar) you can google questions to ask grad advisors. See if any of the questions apply to your situation or even make you think of new questions to ask. I wouldn't ask something pointless that's clearly stated on their website, but I'm sure you'll find something you can ask. It's a nice way to remain in contact and show your interest in the program.

Oh: and now, there are the academia.edu views. But no city listed..... where are you from, mysterious visitor person??

I didn't have a city listed on the inital page I clicked on. There was just a generic "someone from somewhere in the united states viewed your page" thing going on, but I clicked on something that finally listed the city. I'm pretty pleased with what I saw, too!

  3. Also, if the other joint women's programs are any indication...http://thegradcafe.com/survey/index.php?q=michigan+women%27s&t=a&o=

Edited to add: I just noticed that if you search "ann arbor psychology" the results for UM come up a little better. From what I see there, in 2012 they let those rejected know at the end of January via email, and in 2011 they were notified by letter at the end of January/beginning of February.

If you're looking for other shows I'd try NCIS; NCIS New Orleans; NCIS Los Angeles; Bates Motel; Quantico; How to Get Away with Murder; Moral Orel; Life in Pieces; Deadbeat; Chicago PD; Chicago Med; or Robot Chicken.

Sadly that's not even half the shows I watch lmao!

Right before my first big app deadline I was in a car crash that totaled my car. I couldn't really leave the couch for a bit so I binged watched NCIS. Then three weeks after that my husband was in an accident where we totaled the rental car from my crash...so two months, two crashes, and here we are 11 seasons later...

  5. It shouldn't really affect anything. When you're accepted to a school, just let the registrar's office know that you have a new name that you're signing up under and that should be that. Depending on the school you may have to provide a copy of your marriage license along with a name change form. If you're still applying to schools (which it doesn't seem like you are), there's a box on the applications where you can list your maiden name. That's what I've been using :)

Congrats on the marriage! I highly recommend courthouse marriages. Granted, I'm an eloped military spouse so everything was kind of on the fly :) Changing names is a minor pain in the ass, but seems to be an oddly fluid process. I still have my debit card in my maiden name, and there haven't been any problems with that. You could really take as long as you need. Changing my Social Security card and driver's license was the worst only because of the wait times in the office. Other than that, there's never been any hassle!

Hows everyones holidays? Anyone get acceptance letters for christmas?

Not for any of my I/O programs! I did get an interview invitation for a social psych program though. I hate going through the results page and seeing all the clinical invites though. Looks like someone received an invite to interview at Texas A&M, and my heart skipped a beat until I saw it was for the clinical track.

Thanks for the suggestion, friend! I will have to pick some up from the store!

That night, I was hurting quite a bit (had surgery December 4th, body is still recovering!) so I took a painkiller that did make me sleepy, but I find it also yields very shallow/light/not-deep sleep. And my mind was also racing that night! So I think this emergenzzz is something that could help in a pinch. Good alternative to my standby,  melatonin :-)

I think Emergen-ZZZ and massive amounts of ibuprofen are what got me through the aftermath of my car crash right before Thanksgiving. Airbags hurt, man :) Light sleeping is the worst, too. This application season has seen far too many nights of sleep where I'm pretty certain I've just laid there with my eyes closed. It's almost like my body is asleep, but my mind thinks all through the night.

While it's a good thing sleepless nights don't matter much now that the semester is over, sleepless nights still suck. I'm sick of this.

For me, sleepless nights usually happen for one of two reasons: 1) I'm worried about something and can't sleep, or 2) At some point I messed up my sleep cycle by staying up too late and then can't get back on a good cycle. For both of these, I've found that Emergen-ZZZ (Emergen-C with melatonin) helps a lot. It tastes better than regular Emergen-C, and I can drink a glass at night and be out like a light in 30 minutes no matter what is on my mind. The berry flavor is great, and the added vitamin C is always nice :)

    Alcohol, mostly ;)

Trying to balance between continuing to live my life and realizing that Plan B may turn into a reality if things don't work out. Lots of self-care. And spending time with my cats :)

Here, here! Alcohol and cats are a cure-all. Browsing the forums and watching Netflix have been taking up a lot of time this week!

  10. Did anyone else apply to Florida International University? I just noticed that there were two different addresses listed for where to send transcripts, and it looks as though they haven't recieved my transcripts yet. At the very least they aren't in the system. Anyone else have the same problem?

Right?!  I get it that they have to sort through a pile of applications a mile high and time is precious, but how are we supposed to explain anything substantive in one page/500 words?  I like your haiku idea.

I kept it to a nice single spaced page, but yeah...561 words. Any less and it sounded like crap. It'll take them an extra six seconds to read :)

  12. I would love to go back to Seattle for school, but it isn't going to happen. I tried so hard to force a research fit with someone at UW, but I figured I shouldn't waste an application to a place that wasn't going to take me for an obvious lack of fit :) Haha, oh well! Go Huskies!

Also, I'm currently trying to finish a last minute application. Personal statement word limit on this one is 500 words, but they freaking ask for your entire life story! How the hell am I supposed to tell someone why I picked psychology, why I want a graduate degree, my research and interests background, and who I want to work with all in 500 words?!?! I'm sitting at 540 words and I'm this close to scrapping the damn thing and writing a haiku instead.

    I will work for you
Pick me or I will cry
    I will study hard
