  2. Hi RWBG and coachjrc. I think either of you are in a position of authority to answer my question! so i guess my question basically trickles down to, "does the adcom have a preference for quantitative over the qualitative, and vice versa?" Maybe Rochester is an exception since it is very well known for quant specific training, but in general, it is my impression that many of the successful candidates lack the quant background at the time they enroll in their Phd programs. In any case they have to relearn all the tools, stats and what not, from what i gather. But I found it ironic how many people at least on TGC are emphasizing the quant preparation in their SOP's. I shouldnt generalize, but did these people simply happen to incorporate quant methods during their UGs, or are they leaning towards quant methodologies because adcoms tend to prefer those? I did take upper econ, stats, multivariable calc and etc, but I am predominantly from an area studies background and I was wondering if I would be in a position of disadvantage for not having extensively discussed quant methodologies in my SOP Thanks!!
  3. Hey guys It is really good to see the thread heating up! Another Madison confirmation email here. Speaking of which, how do you guys check the status of your application? There are only a handful that provides complete status online and the rest are not too great in this regard. I've emailed and called to get a confirmation, and I was surprised to hear from one place that an unexpected material was missing but I found out about it only because i bothered to call up. It would suck if you get rejected--or worse, forgotten-- just because your application was 'unexpectedly' missing things, and I was wondering how people manage. Have to agree though, most places seem very kind and organized.
  4. Hey guys, a great discussion going on~ Looks like GRE has been mentioned quite a few times thus far, but I would still like to throw a question out to the floor myself. Is the analytic writing portion of the exam really looked down upon by the adcoms, to the point of actually being ignored altogether? Im looking into top programs, and my stats number wise are 4.1 GPA, 169V, 163Q, and 4.5 writing (78%) just wanted to seek some advice/opinions especially from those familiar with the whole process on how that 4.5 could potentially impact the overall package Thanks !
