  1. Yeah, NYU cleaned my pockets majorly. I think it's best to wait another year, get it together, and then reapply.
  2. Thanks so much. This makes me feel a lot better.
  3. Excellent. Thank you all so much. Definitely something I'll look into.
  4. It's a PhD in English. Normally, schools do fund their PhD students for this type of program, but they said they couldn't fund me, but welcome to the department.
  5. Thanks for your reply. I want to be a professor, but I just worry because they say the top-notch candidate has some sort of research experience.
  6. I graduated from Rutgers in 2012 with a 3.75 GPA, Magna Cum Laude in my field, English and Philosophy Studies. I went to NYU for my Master's in Humanities and Social Thought, and I will be graduating in May 2014 with a 3.991 GPA. Sadly, I don't have research experience. I did get into a PhD program, but it wasn't funded--and it's not exactly one of the best schools as people in the chatroom have told me. So, I'm going to try reapplying next year, but I think I need to spruce up my application a bit more. Now that I'm out of school, how can I get research experience? Publishing? What constitutes a strong applicant?
  7. Lol. True. Yeah, I guess I'll just wait to reapply. It wasn't exactly my dream school anyway. It was more of a safety school, but there's no safety in it since there's no funding, right?
  8. Which school seems to be the best fit for you? Or what are you leaning towards?
  9. I got into the PhD program at Temple, but I forgot to mention that they didn't give me funding. Or should I wait to reapply next year? What do you guys think?
  10. You're totally right. To be honest, many of the professors are like that, but because I was under their study for two years, I just assumed they were right. But you know, Temple has a beautiful department. I'm sure I'll be just fine there. Its department and coursework was what inspired me to study there in the first place!
  11. Thanks so much for your reply. I do like their English department, but my professors scared me a bit. It was kind of harsh, to be honest. They said, "Going to Temple from NYU is like trading in a Maserati for a bus pass." Isn't that awful?
  12. No, for sure. I guess I just wanted to have a plan for worst-case scenario.
  13. I'm still waiting to hear back from these schools: - U. Penn - Rutgers - Cornell - CUNY - Oxford - University of Toronto
  14. I'm an NYU Master's student, and I got accepted into Temple University's PhD in English today. Should I even consider taking it, or is it a "downgrade" from NYU?
  15. Hi, ColinMatthew. Do you really think Rutgers is one of the best? All my professors tell me I'd be "downgrading" if I were to get accepted there.
  16. Thanks so much for your reply. I guess I can try. I can ask them how I can make it stronger perhaps?
  17. I study in the interdisciplinary department of humanities and society, specifically focusing on philosophy. I applied to NYU's PhD in Philosophy program, and I just got rejected yesterday. I feel terrible right now. NYU was one of the best things that has ever happened to me, and now I lost it. I feel like if I go to Rutgers or another school, I will be "downgrading" my education. I don't want to go from a top university to a lower one. Should I just wait another year to reapply?

  19. I was just wondering if anybody knew. Please list some suggestions. Thank you!
  20. Wow. People really suck in the chatroom! At least I'm in a PhD program now! No worries about running into those losers again! :D

      CUNY, here I come!!!

Also adding: Reports without any backing of the chatroom can't really go anywhere. We'll get a flood of "he said-she said" reports, with no screen captures, no backing, and no context. That doesn't really help, especially when people have different versions of what happened.

Eigen, don't worry about it. I'm not. :)
