  1. Thank you YoungR3b3I, PsychGirl1 and PsychChick for your comments. I would like to say that I spoke to some of the admission coordinators about my profile and asked them if my increased TOEFL score can compensate for the low verbal, they said that they don't look at TOEFL, beyond the minimum requirement so improving Toefl won't be fruitful. Anyway, I am gonna apply to all the ph.d programs I have shortlisted, in the hope that my research work and GPA will compensate for the low GRE. Thanks again all of you for putting your thoughts and helping me.
  2. Hi, I am thinking to attempt TOEFL again to raise my score. I have a score of 87 which doesn't seem to full fill the need given my low GRE verbal. So I was wondering whether there is a score select option too in the TOEFL section, which allow us to send score which we want. What if I perform poor than the last time ? Do I still hold the chance of sending the old score or I will lose it once I get the new score. Please let me know your thoughts, any kind of help would be highly appreciated.
  3. I appreciate your quick responses guys. I would like to tell people who are recommending me to retake it, that I had already memorized lots of weird words from "Most casual words to Magoosh's words", and trust me I didn't come across any question in the test where I found the memorized list worth using. There were very few questions, may be one or two, where I needed to use those weird words. All the memorization of words was a futile effort, nothing more. The TOEFL would compensate for the lack ? If so, I can significantly increase the score, may be around 105. I had 23 in each section except listening where I received only 18, no doubt, this low score was caused by the poor testing conditions. If TOEFL can probably make up for the low GRE, I will definitely go for it. Anyway, thank you all of you for putting your thoughts on the forum. It really helped
  4. Hi folks, Hope you are doing fine. Today, I have given my GRE and finds myself totally unhappy with the scores, especially verbal. My profile looked pretty much strong for the admission in IO ph.d this fall, but now I guess, GRE Verbal score has ruined everything I have accumulated for the years to build my profile. My profile is so far- UnderGrad GPA - 3.87 (WES Evaluation) GRE scores- V-146, Q-157, AWA- not available yet Research Exp.- 2 publications (One in peer-reviewed journal and one in non-peer reviewed), along with approx. 1 year of work as an RA Toefl- 87 Extracurricular Activities- There are lots of them I have dealt with. Provided my profile so far, I don't think that I have a shot at any ph.d program I aimed to apply. So I will definitely chuck out the universities I shortlisted for Ph.d and will aim to apply to only Master's program. But still if there is any way I can compensate the lack of verbal score, please let me know, it would be a big help for me. Although I saw on the results page where some applicants were wait-listed with the score of as low as 144 in the verbal, i wonder if I can still make it Please let me know your thoughts, I appreciate your time in advance Thanks and Regards
  5. @citypsych- That was a great resource. Thanks for sharing..
  6. I emailed around 7 POI's about whether or not they are taking students this fall, and I heard back from 5 of them replying in affirmative. They were very nice and polite, and asked me about my credentials in terms of GRE and Research exp. P.S. I didn't attach my CV to the emails.
  7. Thanks Bren2014 and Victorydance for your comments. I will definitely mention them now, I was a bit ambivalent though but now it seems it has been resolved.
  8. Hi, I am working on my CV these days and I have come across an issue which driving me crazy for the last 1 week. I have given it enough thought but still didn't find any answer. My problem involves the "two internships I had in my undergrad days as part of the syllabus i.e. one in counselling and one in clinical psychology- 1 month each", now I am not sure whether or not I should mention them in my CV when it comes to applying to IO psychology Ph.D programs. Would it look weird if I mention them in my CV since it is not pertained to the IO psychology ?? Please let me know your thoughts what you think about it. Any kind of insight would be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance
  9. I have written a research paper recently and hopefully got it published in one of the psychology journal. Since it has been published already, do I need to send it as it is or I can make the amendments if I find some flaws in the writing. Actually, this article doesn't represent my current level of writing so I was thinking to edit it before sending it to the department. Please let me know your thoughts.
  10. As far as I know, the admission process is not that tough given what it takes to apply to US universities. You just need at least 3 years of working experience to qualify for the admission in addition to your master's degree. Rest is available on their departmental websites. Best of luck !!
  11. Sorry, I didn't find any GRE passages on the webpage. Could you please provide me the link of these passages ?
  12. I have seen people rating essays here so it would be a big help if you can pass your comments here. Woven baskets characterized by a particular distinctive pattern have previously been found only in the immediate vicinity of the prehistoric village of Palea and therefore were believed to have been made only by the Palean people. Recently, however, archaeologists discovered such a "Palean" basket in Lithos, an ancient village across the Brim River from Palea. The Brim River is very deep and broad, and so the ancient Paleans could have crossed it only by boat, and no Palean boats have been found. Thus it follows that the so-called Palean baskets were not uniquely Palean. Write a response in which you discuss what specific evidence is needed to evaluate the argument and explain how the evidence would weaken or strengthen the argument. The author states that the basket found in the area of Lithos couldn’t be of Palean people. He gave his argument by stating that they didn’t have any boats to travel to another side of river which was very deep and wide, so the basket couldn’t belong to Palean ‘s pre historic age. This argument of author lacks several considerations and can be weaken in many ways. First the author says that the river is very broad and deep which can be crossed with the help of boat, but the author never states that the level of water in the river was the same in the ancient time of Palean people. The river might have not that much strong and they could have manged to cross it by swimming itself. The author provides no concrete evidence regarding the status if river in earlier times. Secondly, the author points out that the distinct basket found in the Lithos which could be brought on the other side of river with the help of boats, but since there was no evidence reagrding the Palean people having boats, the author refutes the argument that the dinstinct basket can’t be of Palean people. It can be weaken by stating that, it might be the case that Palean didn’t travel to the another side of river to Lithos but he never says that Lithos might have travelled to Paleans. The basket might have brought by the Lithos themselves to their village rather than Paleans. And author gives no evidence of about the boats in Lithos whether they have it or not. Thirdly, Author gives no discription of weather status of ancient times of Paean and Lithos. The basket which was found in Lithos might have brought by the flood. The area of Palean and Lithos might be flood prone area where the flood took place twice or once a year or two. The basket could have travelled to the Lithos by means of flood water which totally makes it the artifact of Palean people. So in conclusion, these evidence truly weaken the author’s argument regarding the basket and point out serious flaws which weakens the argument overall.
  13. Joshw4288, What do you mean I didn't do any empirical research. My paper has been successfully submitted after being peer-reviewed. There was no such methodological flaw which makes it 'not empirical'. You mean to say that any research would be called empirical if it is performed under somebody's supervision ?? There are lots of people out there who undertake many independent projects on their own because they don't feel in anyway that they need somebody's advice or supervision. If you think that no body on the planet can write research paper without somebody's supervision, then I'm sorry to say that you are wrong and would like to suggest you to have a look around. You will find many cases similar to mine. Awaiting response
  14. Thank you for that input. I did my research on my own, I didn't do it under any supervisor rather I consulted some friends and mostly journals which helped to get through. Both the papers were independent projects. This led me to ask you the second question whether it is necessary to work with/under any professor because my pubs are independent. I hope you got the point now
  15. Hi, If you have given the GRE recently, then there is no point in appearing again for it because it's not gonna help you to raise you V score much. I don't know about your program whether the V score matter that much or not though, but you can compensate this inadequacy by scoring better in TOEFL. I think you should try to score at least above 100, it might get you through
  16. Hi Realities, Would applicants aspiring for a Ph.D must require lab exp e.g. working under a professor as RA or performing some calculations with those statistical algorithms ?? I have two publications- one is non peer reviewed and one is a peer reviewed as a research experience. Would this research experience be enough to get me in doctoral program or I have to wait until i get a chance to work under the supervision of some professors to get in. Please let me know, your views would be appreciated.
  17. I have the APA book so if you need that you can let me know. I think that is the most helpful resource I have ever had. It got all the guidelines along with examples.
  18. I sent you a PM..
  19. Haha same here, BTW can you please tell me which universities you are applying to if you don't mind me asking. Anyway 'Best of Luck"
  20. Hi rabbit2013, You might find this link helpful- https://www.datacamp.com Cheers
  21. Hi Bren2014, After reading your post, I came across a question that after getting a Ph.D, would they be prevented from working in applied setting ?? since a doctoral program vouch strongly for a career in academia. Right now, I am not sure whether I want to go to academia or applied setting as these both sectors sounds good to me so i want to give myself little bit more time to get familiarize myself with the real work environment and then decide. I just want to leave both the options open when it comes to decision making regarding my career. It would be great if you can through some light on my query. Thanks in advance
  22. Hi PsychChick, I too have done some courses from MOOC, I don't know whether it will help or not but I did put it on my CV and LinkedIn profile. Let's see if it brings something good to me
  23. Well, I am too preparing for Fall 2015 doctoral program in I/O psychology. I have kind of compiled a list of universities I'm gonna apply for this fall, GRE yet to be given though
  24. Thank you Adele for your comments, you almost solved my queries but you said in Q. 2 that it's good to let the committee know where you are going in terms of research interest but what if the research interest doesn't match with the faculty ?? Would that be a problem like Ph.D application. As far as my instincts are concerned I think it's not required to match your research interest with faculty for Master's... Right ?? Ahh I see. I'm applying to 12 Ph.D program which I think vary in their requirement. I really hope that I get in one of them, anyway thank you so much for insights. Best of luck with your studies
  25. Thank you so much ClinicalPsychPhd20 for your thoughts. And yes I'm applying for Ph.D in I/O Psychology, and Master's as a back up. Anyway I don't think I can boost those V score since I have done my best and memorized lots of words already but couldn't achieve the desired score. Do you think in anyway I can compensate for that low V score in my app. Please let me know views. Again thanks for your response
