  1. Hi Folks, Hope you are doing great !! I have some questions to ask I came across recently while shortlisting universities for Fall 2015. It would be great if you through some light on these questions and help me to get on a right track. Anyway these are as follows..... 1. My GRE V score-151 (Though TOEFL is above the minimum but not good-87) is under the minimum requirement of the university while my Q is above average along with all the remaining one's...does it mean that my application would be straight away rejected ?? 2. While writing the SOP for Master's, is it required to mention your research interest which you want to pursue in your Ph.D ?? 3. In Ph.D's SOP, applicants have to mention their POI whom they are really interested in working with for their doctoral program or it's more of the university's job to assign you the faculty which they think are right irrespective of your choice ?? 4. And in the last, What if I have broad research interest e.g. five or six topics but the faculty of the program shares only two or three topics with me then should I still state all my research interest in the SOP or I should go on emphasizing little more on the shared interest while ignoring the rest of them. Please let me know your thoughts and views on above mentioned queries. Thank you so much in advance
  2. Yeah that would work if I am not mistaken. Since property is a commodity which can be translated in liquid money it should work but not 100% sure, still I would advise you to have a word with concerned people I recommended in earlier post.
  3. Hi, As far as I know, for 2nd year you might need to provide some back up plan, i.e. stocks or bonds, to fund your studies in case you don't receive any funding from the university since these assistantships are solely based on your previous year performance in the academics. I would strongly advise you to visit nearest USIEF office, they provide free guidance on visa applications and much more. You can visit this link for more info.- http://www.usief.org.in/ Hope this helps
  4. Don't fit to the slot completely but yes I am preparing for Fall 2015 Ph.D in I/O Psychology along with some Master's program as a backup
  5. wow..I must say now you possess all the skills required for an academic adviser Thanks Bren for resolving my dilemma. I definitely would work on the suggestions. Thanks again and best of luck with grad life ahead.
  6. First of all, Thank you Bren for taking out time and replying to my post. Considering my research interests, yes there are three topics which I like most to work on- Team performance, Trust and Leadership. But there are also some areas which I more or less inclined towards. I am still having hard time coming to the conclusion which one to pursue further, it all seems interesting. I have read many articles and all seems worth working upon. Apart from that, I haven't come across any faculty yet who has all the three interests similar to mine, some have one or two along with some other topics which I don't have enough knowledge of ( in-depth knowledge). Sometimes, there are also more than two faculty member in the same department who matches to my research interest. I have no idea what to do next...If you are put in this situation, what would you do ?? That's why I posted a question whether it would be good idea to compromise on your research interests, if yes then how would you deal with it. And the last question, at least, how many research topic you can choose to work upon in your doctoral program. it must be three or more topics can be added ?? Please let me know if possible, it would be a great help. Thanks again
  7. Hi everyone, Hope everybody is doing great, I'm back with a conundrum which needs your insights. I am in the process of shortlisting universities for Ph.D for fall 2015. I have kind of accumulated 30 universities which I will narrow down to 15 approx. My problem mainly involves the research interests which I think gonna be a serious concern for me. I haven't yet developed a penchant for a particular research area, since "I belong to the pool of people who start loving what they do rather than the people who do what they love". I believe that I would be comfortable with every kind of research area as far as it falls under the ambit of I/O psychology. So considering the above mentioned points here goes my concerns one after one- 1. What would you do if you were at my position and your ultimate goal was to get a Ph.D in I/O psychology. What criteria would you adopt to shortlist universities and how would you mould yourself as per the POI ?? 2. I have two publication; one is on "Social support" and another is on "Team performance and Interpersonal trust in teams". If I contact a POI having different research interest considering my publications so far and, whom I would like to work with, then how will I go justifying that I am really interested in his research. Would these publications act against me if I try to choose different research area. These are the problems I'm facing right now which I think you people can solve, especially who have been admitted to the doctoral program. It might sound a little weird from a Ph.D aspirant but I request you to please don't judge A big thank you in advance for reading my post and replying accordingly.
  8. Hi theDreamykind, Your suggestions along with Magoosh prep are so helpful and enlightening. I will be appearing for GRE in June most probably and considering many resources for preperation. I'm afraid of verbal part which I think now I can overcome the barrier by working on your suggestion and using the Magoosh prep. Thanks again for sharing the material with us.
  9. Thanks Roebuck for your suggestions. But I don't think I'm gonna reappear for the GRE since last effort was full fledged from my side, i can't put more effort in it. It's great to hear that somebody made it to doctoral program having stats similar to mine, gives me confidence. For now, I have 2 publications in terms of research experience as I have said earlier and definitely I will try if I can get my name on some more publications. My major worry was GRE scores as I lack in verbal but now it seems that I have a pretty good shot to all the programs. Thanks to you again and hope you will have a great Grad life ahead. Best of luck
  10. Haha Thank you Haoran for building my confidence, I was feeling a bit low lately regarding the same. Anyway, I was also at same position as yours before one year but then I took independent research work ( two publications) which I guess filled the gap. So you may also consider doing some research with your professors or undertaking independent research work. It will definitely bridge the gap. Best of luck !!
  11. Thank you so much for your help. This link seems to be a great help, you are a savior
  12. Thanks Munashi, I appreciate your words Thanks Bren for your suggestions, I will definitely consider your points.
  13. Thanks Munashi for your quick reply. Yes I do check the info. by visiting the particular websites of the schools but my concern was whether the siop lists all the I/O schools or I should explore some other sources too to look for schools apart from siop ?? because as far as my knowledge is concerned, most of the universities with I/O program are listed on the website which kind of makes me reluctant to go for other sources. Just wanted to know your thoughts.
  14. Hi everyone, I'm sorry in advance if this post seems silly to you but I kind of stuck with the dilemma so thought to put it in front of you. I hope I will get the solution with the help of your insights. I'm an undergrad student from India, aspiring to study I/O (Ph.D) for Fall 2015 from US. From the last few months I have been visiting this great forum as well as SIOP.org too. On the SIOP, there are many universities along with their average requirement ( GRE, GPA, funding opportunities) are mentioned. So I was just wondering if it is a reliable source for shortlisting universities or I should look to some other websites too such as Pearson, Princeton and so on. And my other questions is what is the criteria based on I should shortlist a university ?? I mean, I have checked all the stats which a Ph.D candidate needs to qualify for the program and luckily I pass the threshold including GPA, research exp., extracurricular activities but GRE which is pretty low; V-152, Q-155, AWA- 4. Based on my GRE scores should I drop the schools despite the fact that they match my research interest or I should just play the hunch. This might seem kind of boring to answer such questions but please do answer if you can in anyway possible. I hope I will have a chance to get to know your insightful remarks on my queries. Thanks a ton...
  15. Thanks Double Shot for your input. It will really help me as i have had pretty weird notions about Canadian Schools but now it seems to be resolved. Again thank you and best of luck with future career so far. regards
  16. Ahh thanks for your help. I would like to apply to Canadian schools too if I get a good program there. Regards
  17. Hi, I'm also preparing for Fall 2015 and would you mind if I ask you to share your stats. At least it ll give me an idea about the scores required in GRE to secure admission. I appreciate your effort in advance. Regards
  18. Hi, What made you to transfer from NewYork to Canada ?? I mean I was also thinking to apply in canadian schools for my MS in I/O along with US universities. So it would be great if you can share your experience with Canada and what benefits an international student can reap in Canada ?? I am bit skeptical considering Canada for my MS in terms of quality education and job opportunities. Thanks in advance to take some time out to have a look at it. regards
  19. Hello People, I'm going through a minor confusion it would be great if you can put your thoughts here to resolve it. Actually before 2 days I received an email that I have been selected for an research internship which mainly focuses on CSR activities (Corporate Social Responsibilities ) but not on typical I/O topics. I am wondering whether this internship will be carrying the same weightage as typical I/O internship. Please put your thoughts below and let me know whether I should join this or wait for another one which especially deals with OB. I am providing a URl (www.outlineindia.com) if someone needs it for further details. Regards
  20. Thank you everyone for your valuable time to provide your thoughts but I think you didn't get my issue. Actually in OB people research about the behavioral factors which have influence on the productivity or any other task. But apart from it there are also some topics which best fit to come under the ambit of sociology such as - improving the status of children in society, improving the status of women by streamlining operations for women's economic group and so on. So the experience on latter part of research would be countable towards the research experience in OB or not i.e. would this experience be considered similar to the experience in OB if I plan to take admission in masters I/O. I welcome your valuable comments and thoughts.
  21. Hi, I'm a graduate from India and currently doing a research on "The relation between trust and team performance" in organization. But unfortunately I do not have adequate questionnaire which can measure these two factors properly in employees. So if any one have a questionnaire measuring any factor i.e. Inter-personal trust or Team Performance please forward it to me. it would be beig help for me. Thanks in advance to take out some time to read this and respond. regards Virendra email id- vnirwan@gmail.com
  22. hi, I'm in little dilemma here. What if somebody have a research experience on social issues such as women empowerment, gender research which is more inclined towards the social factors but not on the hardcore OB topics will add-up in the research experience ?? As I have done my bachelor's and trying to find the hardcore internship which I can relate to I/O field but not getting it. which ultimately forcing me to join the internships which are based on above mentioned topics. So please tell me if this experience will be counted toward my research work or not. Or I should wait for the opportunity which relates to OB field. regards
  23. Hi, I'm preparing for MS in I/O from abroad including Canada. I had heard a lot about Canadian universities which provide I/O for MS/Ph.D. How many universities are there which worth applying for ? And what are the chances of getting a job after the degree as an International student ? Please provide me with your valuable insights. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks & regards
