Beware the MBA Round 3! It is notoriously difficult to be accepted as a Round 3 applicant. Most business schools will advise you to apply R1 or R2, or else, to apply R1 of the next cycle. By R3, most of the class has been filled. The open spots are reserved for applicants whose background, characteristics, goals, etc. will round out the incoming class.

Besides, the MBA application process is an entirely different beast. If you have a non-business-y background, the case you make for yourself as to "Why an MBA?" needs to be particularly strong.

This cycle I applied to 5 MPP/MPA/MA degrees and got into all of them. I applied to 8 MBAs and was waitlisted by 2, rejected by 4 (without an interview), and accepted by 1! I am still waiting for one more. The program that accepted me does not allow dual degrees with programs outside the university, which kind of messes up my dual degree plan.

I think my background and goals affected my chances of admission. I think I was too in line with a policy degree, but I wanted to amplify that policy orientation with business skills to work across sectors, industries, and functions. It is a shame that careers are in many ways path-dependent.

Thanks for the advice. I am definitely sticking to the MPA/MPP route as my goals are more aligned to that track.

Do anyone have regrets about applying for MPP/MIA/MPA degrees instead of MBA programs? Even though public service leadership roles require different types of skills, it's also easily obtainable through MBA/LD programs, and those latter programs are much better at helping graduates secure higher paying jobs and it doesn't confine them as much to just one sector. And then because of the intense amount of loans for an MPP/MIA/MPA, it can be financial hell trying to control the $1,000+/month payments on the total of $80-$140,000 of student loans while trying to develop your career in a big city, raising a family, having kids, and other big life purchases and decisions.

How are people feeling about their decisions as acceptances are out, and as people are starting/ending their programs?

Funny that you posted this. I was looking at Round 3 MBA application deadlines today and thinking about possibly doing a dual degree. I think I made the right choice, but I do wonder about the prospects of an MBA. I am excited for the MPA journey.

  3. Matt and the admissions team are absolutely amazing. I love how transparent they have been through this whole process. I can't believe they are sitting in a living room sipping coffee while we are checking our emails obsessively. I love the fact that they know we are all losing it. Thanks for all the hard work HKS admissions team! Wonder if they check this blog. T minus 1 day and counting. Hopefully!

Well good luck to you wherever you go! I still think it's worth an email, though. :)

I completely agree. I didn't receive any funding as of yet. However, I am willing to fight and find resources to make a dream come true. Still waiting to hear from other schools as well. I would just encourage people don't give up yet, if this is a dream of yours. Everything happens for a reason and only you can make the right decision. I am willing to email and call to find out options. Worst thing they can say is no... :-) Cheers to everyone following their dreams!

  5. Only a few more days. Chronic email checker and blog stalker here as well. We can do this. Would love to find out on Wednesday. Anticipating it will be Friday with all of the other schools as well. We can do this! Really appreciate the support of this blog to get me through these final days. Hopefully we will all be classmates soon.

  6. Update from NYU on the Applicant Portal: Looks like we will be waiting until next Friday.

There is a technical glitch with our third-party application system. As a result, you may be seeing a default system processing message indicating a waitlist status. No admission decisions have been made at this time. All official notifications will be provided via email. NYU Wagner does not post admission decisions on the online student dashboard. If you submitted your application by December 15, you will be notified via email on March 11.

We sincerely apologize for any confusion this may have caused.

So the blog entry on waitlisted applicants was posted today. The previous two 'Reading and Decisions Proccesses' blog entries have each been two days ahead of the corresponding dates they were posted last year, when decisions came out on Wednesday the 11th. Note that Wednesday is the 9th this year---right in line with things being two days ahead.

Very exciting. Thanks for this update. Fingers crossed for Wednesday as well!

Hi all, I'm waiting along with you. I got super lucky and had a semi-finalist interview for one of the fellowships last week, and they seemed to indicate that this would be the timeline:

    • Fellowship finalists by 3/4
    • Admission decisions by 3/11
    • Other financial/scholarship decisions sometime the week after

It seemed like they were feeling pretty good about meeting those dates, but you never know. Good luck to everyone! Maybe we'll all be in school together next year!

As for "why NYU" for me - First, I applied to HKS, Michigan Ford, Goldman Berkeley, and NYU. All of these schools are great; all of them have completely different programs. The draw for NYU to me is two things: it's a school of public service instead of policy (which is interesting), and the scheduled allows you to work part or even full time, if you want. My big interest is in domestic poverty; there's some great work being done on that front at NYU. I'm applying after seven years of practice as a USDOJ attorney, so one thing that was important to me was reciprocity in other jurisdictions. Other than CA, I would have reciprocity in all of the states where I applied, meaning I could practice without taking another bar. NYC also allows for a lot of possible transfer opportunities for me, work wise. If I get in to more than one of these schools, then I have to have go into Serious Self-Reflection Mode and figure out what I really, really want. If I only get into one, then The Fates have made the decision for me. We'll see!

    Good luck, everyone!

Thanks for sharing the timelines and the "why" by NYU. Very helpful. Wishing you and everyone all the best. Counting down to finding out next week!

You shouldn't expect to hear from them this week, but I'm quite certain that the decisions will be out around the end of the next week. Last week there was a Q&A session for early admitted students with the heads of admissions and financial aid and they said that we should expect to receive fin aid decisions around March 11th. And since they told us earlier that they will release these decisions together with admission letters I think it's fair to say that there is still at least one more week to wait for all of us.

Very helpful information! I am hoping we only have one week left of waiting! Good luck everyone!

  10. I also saw the same thing about applying before 12/5 decisions would be out by 3/5. Anxiously awaiting here as well. Would love thoughts from everyone about "why" they would attend NYU over their other schools. Good luck everyone! 2-3 more weeks hopefully.

I'm assuming everyone else got the email about the survey? I got very excited for a moment there!

Same here! Was very excited even though I knew it was about admission results! Exciting to know early-march is what we are waiting for!
