  1. Ok, a few things that you may wish to keep in mind. If you are joining, are you joining as enlisted or officer, with a bachelors, or higher, you may wish to look into officer. If you go enlisted, every time you speak to someone, and mention you schooling will tell that you should go officer. PS, coast Guard may be a better choice. Point 2:, not very important, but the two weeks can be anytime doing the fiscal year, not necessarily in the summer, but that is usually what everyone says. Also, if you join a unit that does Unit AT, you may be required to the the AT (two weeks, or more, or less) with the unit, regardless of where it falls. But school usually excuses military absences, but you will still have to make up the work. (Do not, expect to get any additional work done during those times, though it may be possible). If you are doing linguistics, as enlisted, I would suggest go crypto. Point 3: the GI bill for reservist is not all that you think it is. It is about $300 or so a month. For a college student, that may be a lot, but it does not pay for your classes or any such thing unless you have had completed prior 4 years in active duty. The military is outside of part time jobs, usually, because it is not a weekly thing. Point 4: they have changed requirements for deployment. It is no longer on a involuntary basis, unless your unit is deploying, (good luck). Also, as a side note. Once you have been chosen, if you are, to deploy, you, or your unit, no longer have a choice in that matter. Your fate is practically sealed. But on the good side, you have to choose to be deployed (on many cases since the change). Most programs would not be against you serving for your country. If anything, it's an added bonus to your application. But at the same time, it may not be an easy thing to juggle. keep those in mind as you make your decisions. PS. 6 years reserve, about to finishing my contract.
  2. I know that most people, once in the science sides stay there, and likewise with the humanities. Though very seldomly, sometimes, there are those who upon acquiring a masters in one may decide to combine, or switch to the other side. I am currently in such predicament. I currently have a masters in French and Francophone studies, a semester to complete my masters in Linguistics, but I want to switch to Soil and Water Science, or AgroForestry. I do not want to forgo of my linguistics ( maybe) but I really want to further my studies in the Ag dep. Any comments, concerns, opinions would help with that decision.
  3. This topic regards the applications of the combinations of multiple fields and their outcomes. Raise questions about combining different fields, (sciences and humanities), and how these can be done.
  4. Awesome Sociolinguist, I will see you then. What are you presenting? I officially will be attending SLA in Portland. If anyone here is attending, holler.
  5. Awesome. Thank you. I am planning on attending LSA. I will be making that decision over during this weekend. Which admission are you awaiting on?
  6. Also, have you been to these places? what is housing, and transportation is like?
  7. Also, logdice, Have you attended any of the previous LSA conferences?
  8. Hey Logdice, that is super Awesome. This will be my first time. I am glad to find someone who will be there. I was also considering going to the LSA Summer Institute in Chicago over the summer as well. I was not planning on the NAACL conference coincide on the last day with the DSNA. I am however highly thinking of attending the LSA Conference. Let me know if you end up going. These will also be my first conferences outside of Florida as well. So, I am not sure what to expect just yet. Any pointers would be awesome.
  9. I will be doing my first Conference Presentation as well at Dictionary Society of North America (DSNA) Conference in Colombia, Canada, in June 2015. I am looking forward to it, but there is also a lot that I need to prepare for.
  10. Hi Alishka, That sounds like fun. I do am not attending that one. So you will be presenting? have you presented at small conferences, like at your university or so be this one?
  11. To answer your question, first, I am not applying to Stony Brook. However, if you can not find the length requirements, you can go with the standard, which is "two pages, double space, 12 pt font" and your choice of font theme, but usual TNR,or Arial works. If you receive an answer that is different from this one, it will not be extremely different. If it is extremely different, let us know so that we know there is a different set of reqs that deviate from this one. Best.
  12. Since 2014 is almost over, as well as application for 2014's events, this is a forum for the events taking place in the following year. If you are attending, or having any questions on attending any workshop or conference this following year. Workshops and Conferences, amongst others are great ways to not only learn from colleagues, but also meet others to create connections, and possibly collaborate with. That is how you get your name out there, by attending, and or presenting at these events. Comments, Questions, Concerns are welcome. JD.
  13. Awesome. by birthing, I mean living arrangements
  14. Ok, is there a max/min amount of classes? how many classes can one take? Does the price vary depending on amount of courses? How is birthing arranged? or is not excluded? What else do you do there beside the class?
  15. To start, who is interested in attending this event for summer 2015? and who has already attended and can offer some info? I am interested in attending because of the lexicography course. but I am thinking of taking other courses as well. Also, how does it count in the different Universities?
  16. Ok, I have some questions regarding the summer institutes, and I think many people can share knowledge on there as well. so, a new topic is started at Thank you.
  17. Hello Linguist, this Topic is to discuss The Linguistic Summer Institutes, who is going? who is thinking about it, and who has already attended. Feel free to comment, question, or provide info.!
  18. Awesome. Yest,it is all the way in the summer. Have you attended it yet? I wanted some info on it. I saw the list of the tentative classes up. I am wondering how many of theses classes do I have to or can attend.
  19. And also, do you attend all theses classes, or just specific ones from the list?
  20. If I may add one more cent, First, French Linguistics and Linguistics focusing on French are two different studies, found in two different departments. So, if you want to study French Linguistics, you would be applying to the French departments, Linguistics, Linguistics. Second, yes, you may have to redo the masters as part of the linguistics programs, however, many schools will count it toward your PhD studies, so, it would not be additional cost, or time of study. Third, a PhD in England is very well qualified to work in the US, you can also choose to do a Postdoc in the US as well to up you job potentials. I ll stop counting now. Ziggy has covered many salient points, but additionally, Many Linguistics programs, specially for PhD requires some courses, or proficiency in two to three languages, so you can use your electives towards French while studying linguistics, and some colleges may even have cross departmental classes that may work in your favor. I would say don't worry so much about what you have now, but on which direction you want to go. You can always change things along the way. Depi tet pa koupe nou espere met chapo As long as you are alive, the world is at your hand
  21. Anyone attending Linguistic Summer Institute 2015?
  22. Do you know the cost of attendance by Any Chance?
  23. Awesome, thank you very much. No, it is not too late. Will you be attending? what is your focus in Comp Ling?
  24. I could be wrong, but when applying for PhD, your fit with what the school offers is one of the most important aspect to be considered. If you have made so far, and want to continue into a PhD program, it is 'safe' to assume you did not do it by chance, or by some kind of miracle, you actually worked for it. Therefore, the expectation is that whichever school you are accepted into, you will work just as hard to earn that PhD. Thus if the school that matches what you are looking for is a top school, upon acceptance, you will be expected to earn it. Though acceptance may have to do with their quotas, in which case, you may not provide enough proof that you can perform better than other applicants who match the school interest, that may affect your chances of getting in. But as Caffeinated stated, applying for safety schools is not really sound. I am studying Language Documentation, with a focus on Lexicography of Haitan Creole. This combination was impossible, and only two schools came close, and I was accepted to both of them, and I only applied to three (Third one, in which I did not get accepted was my safety school). I am sure you will have many acceptances and you will do great in whichever you decide to go. Best
