Ugh, I am newly in the waitlist purgatory with you all... I was just waitlisted at my top choice school, which is a bummer, but I was also accepted to other programs that I like less but would still be happy with... So, now I'm not sure what to do! I feel very grateful to have options, but I want to make sure that I end up at the best fit/funding/etc. possible. They're saying they won't tell me until after 4/15 for my fave school... I'm sure it's a pretty huge no-no to say yes to a school and then take another offer later... I guess I should email and ask if there's any way I would find out sooner (assuming someone says no...) but I don't want to be too demanding!

I feel like I've been waiting for so many months to just end up in more limbo. Ugh.

Also, goodness, Seattle is so pricey! I applied to UW mostly because I love the city but was fairly sure that I wouldn't get in and that I might not be able to accept given the funding situation even if I did. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

They won't tell you until after 4/15??? Hmmmm that's a little odd because of rules around funding....I'm not sure how they are getting around that federal date. It's pretty ridiculous that they are trying to make you wait until AFTER you would have to give a decision to any other school. I totally get not wanting to seem demanding, but it does seem like maybe this is something worth communicating about. Will you be going to visit day? Maybe you could see what you can suss out in person? Ugh...sorry you're stuck in purgatory too!

Seattle IS expensive, but there are some good perks that come with UW. I work there doing research currently and am doing my MSW/MPA so we live in graduate family housing (I have a young daughter) and it is ridiculously cheap compared to normal rental prices here. I pay under $1K for a 2 bedroom townhouse. The university also covers half of my childcare, I get excellent insurance through the school, and researching there pays my tuition plus a pretty healthy stipend. We aren't wealthy by any stretch, but it totally works. My issue is how I would do Seattle without school... ha. I moved here from a project I was working on in Spain to begin graduate school so I haven't had to manage here without the help the UW gives...
What funding situation are you referring to at UW? It's guaranteed for 3 years and then you apply for dissertation funding. It is competitive for sure and a bit of a headache, but every person I interviewed when I was considering applying had gotten funding to finish without much issue. I'm fully planning on completing this in 4 years (if I get in) so I feel fairly confident about finding funding for that final year--I've already begun researching the landscape of funders, grants, partnerships, and options for what I want to do... And I hope to get a position as a TA too!
I hope you get good news soon! It's great that you have some other options on the table.

I am waitlisted at Upitt and I just have to tell myself that this wait be be super long and I may not hear back for a long time. I am trying to tell myself this over and over again :) I wish I knew how many people were waitlisted and I may reach out to ask at some point. It is a strange feeling to be so in between.

Ahhhhh isn't it a joy? At least UW gave me their numbers. They gave offers to 5 and there are 3 of us on the waitlist. The director did say that they take people off of the waitlist every year, but whether or not I'll be the lucky one, who knows?

    Good luck!

  4. Thanks folks... I'm trying to make sure I spend the waiting time making sure that my Plan B is really well organized. I live in family housing with my daughter at UW now (finishing up a couple master degrees) so if I don't get into the PhD, we have to move fairly immediately...and Seattle housing is no joke! At least home hunting will keep me occupied...

I just got rejected from Maryland today :( From the department and the graduate school, soooooo ouch... I had really low quantitative GRE scores though because I have a learning disability in mathematics. It is really sad because it might be the very thing holding me back from being able to get into any PhD graduate program forever. I can do ALL of the math, but not fast enough for the GRE. I am registered as having a disability through the government but they make it relatively impossible to get accomodations. With a serious disability there really is a wall that we can hit. I practiced and practiced. I'm sure it is a possibility the rest of my application was not flawless so I emailed them to ask for feedback. If they give me some that I would think is useful in general for people, I will let you know.

I know what it is like to have things come easy because before I got brain injury from a seizure I was brilliant. Now I would say I am smart...ish but mostly just an extremely hard worker. So if you get in anywhere, please use your gifts because intelligence is really a gift, and it can be taken away for good in a matter of minutes. My brother got into Harvard and we were always the same caliber until this happened to me. Everything changed. It is a real shame because I wanted to help people with epilepsy in my research and it would have mattered to a lot of people. Wherever you get in, I believe you will do big things. I did not tell them I have epilepsy and why it mattered, because we get discriminated against. Even once you are seizure free for years, a lot of people are worried about having "a loose cannon." So, unfortunately a lot of people get to share their struggles, explain their stories and circumstances, and connect with people. But when you can be discriminated against, that is not an option.

I was hoping for a shot based on my years of research experience and the possibility that someone would believe in my mission. In addition to everything, probably not a good fit and would not be happy there in the end. Maryland was not my first choice, but this feels like a bad omen. It was pretty early to be rejected so something was probably very, very off. I have given up hope for myself but I will hope for you and the rest of the applicants on the cafe.

I'm sorry to hear you are feeling like this is such an uphill battle--and I don't doubt that it is. I really hope you do find that you get in somewhere soon because you sound incredibly dedicated to your research and you also have the lived experience. We need more academics like you.

  6. Is anyone else in waitlist hell that wants to keep me company? I only applied to ONE program for my PhD because it's really the perfect fit for me. They accepted 5 and put 3 of us on the waitlist. Soooooooo close! They accept people off the waitlist every year, but I have no way of knowing if I'll be one of those lucky ones. So now more waiting, more obsessing, more making sure my Plan B is solid....

  7. @yourruth the 5 seats surprised me! I knew the cohort was kept small, but that's REALLY small. I'm trying to not give up hope, but with only 5 spots total and 3 people on the wait list....it's hard to know what the chances really are.

I hope you get some good news soon!!!

  8. @yourruth I got the following email. I'm trying to stay positive, but ugh....more waiting. This was the only program I was interested in and the only one I applied for. Ahhhhh all those eggs in one fragile basket...

I am writing to let you know that the Admissions Committee has recommended that your application for admission to the PhD Program in Social Welfare be put on waitlist status. We receive a substantial number of high quality applications for very few places and the decisions were very difficult. The Committee was impressed with your application and considers you a strong candidate for the program.  Your status as a finalist is an indication of the strength of your application and we commend you for your accomplishments. However, we do not have enough funding to make offers to everyone who was highly rated, and indeed are taking a cautious approach to admissions so that we can continue to provide students in the program with good supports.  Our incoming class this fall will be 5 students.  We have made offers to 5 applicants, and you and two others are on the waitlist.

We very much hope all 8 of you will be able to attend our Visit Day on March 13th .  It’s an important opportunity for you to meet us, other prospective students, and the other graduate students in our program. We can also set up meetings with faculty members you might be interested in working with, and tell you about the program in more depth.

Although being placed on a waitlist is not a guarantee of admission at a later point, it is quite possible – particularly since our waitlist is small – that things will change as applicants sort through their decisions. Indeed, every year our incoming class includes folk from our waitlist. If a space becomes available, we will notify you immediately. Please also keep in close contact with me in terms of your own process, including your continued interest in being considered for our program.

Emarouk, thank you so much! What program are you studying? I have a lot of questions about hosing! I turned in my application and supporting documents today, so I guess I am just waiting now.

How many months did you have to wait?

Which complex are you living in? I put Laurel as my first preference and Blakely as my second. Is one better than the other? Laurel seemed better to me because it's closer to good bird watching spots, the farm, and a garden that I'm interested in.

Is it safe living in the area? I worry that the downtown area will be crazy hectic.

Do the kids all play together? I would love for my kiddos to have regular play dates with other kids.

Thanks so much for your help!

Hi! I started at Blakeley and moved to LV--partially because my little one went to the school there and partially because I met a couple other single mamas who were living there with daughters the same age as mine--we've really become a great support for one another! Family housing has been awesome. It is so affordable compared to housing in the city and it's great for our littles to have so many kids around. I didn't honestly meet a lot of folks in Blakeley, but I think it was also a matter of time.... And I'm not religious and a lot of my closest neighbors were and maybe weren't so fond of a single mama....but that's a whole other story. I absolutely love LV and my neighbors here, but I bet there's great community at B that I just didn't know how to tap.... If you want a tour guide when you arrive, let me know. My daughter is 5 and LOVES to show folks around the area.

I'm currently doing a  concurrent MSW/MPA and a grad certificate in GH. I finish in June, but I applied to the PhD program here so we shall see....results will be out by Friday!
We aren't downtown at all! Family housing is just outside of the UDistrict--it's a nice neighborhood and we feel completely safe. I think Seattle is safe in general--we have a blast exploring.

This topic is for those headed to UW Seattle in summer and fall 2017! Yay!

In your first post, please introduce yourself. I'll start:

My name is Nikki, and I accepted an offer for the Ph.D. in Educational Psychology focusing on human development and learning sciences. I am moving to Seattle with my husband and two kids (4 and almost 2) sometime in the summer from CA. We hope to secure graduate family housing asap!

    Hi Nikki,

I currently live in family housing if you have any questions about the set-up there. And congrats!

Thank you for the update! Although, I am not holding out much hope since I didn't have an interview and none of the professors I reached out to prior to applying emailed me back. Best of luck to you!!

Thanks! I wouldn't give up hope though... I've spoken with quite a few of the current PhD candidates and NONE of them had an interview... I'm honestly not sure if they changed procedures and are interviewing this year OR they were just on the fence with me and this was more of a 'tie-breaker' situation. I hope you hear good things next week!

  12. For those STILL waiting to hear from University of Washington, I followed up with a thank you email to the asst. director today for the interview yesterday and was told that they do plan to get their decisions out by the end of next week at the latest. This is going to be the longest week ever....

Congrats to those who have already gotten good news!

For those waiting, I just received a call from Dr. Jackson accepting me into the combined MSW/Ph.D program. Welcome day is March 6th so they should be notifying everyone soon. Good luck everyone!

Congratuations! That's a highly competitive program--I hope you're dancing through your day!

Congrats on the interview! I received feedback from mine and was told to really emphasize why I believed the work I wanted to do connected with the school and the specific professors I wanted to work with. In 20 minutes you have so little time to do that but they said to try and fit it in more. Hopefully this helps with your interview!

Thank you! Was your interview with UW? Did you already hear back? I think I spoke WAY too fast and I was so nervous that I'm not actually sure that I made sense, but I guess it is at least over....

@Emaroukcongratulations on getting the interview! I didn't get an email but I'm glad to know where they are in the process now. Thank you for the update.

Thank you! Honestly I'm not sure they always do interviews. I have friends in the program that didn't do one. This could just mean they are on the fence about me....or they've changed their policies. I have NO idea...

    Congrats on your interview!

And congratulations to everyone who has a spot for next fall. I've been rejected from Berkeley and have yet to hear from UCLA, USC, UW-Madison and University of Minnesota- Twin Cities. I also applied to EdD programs and got reject from USC's EdD program. Best of luck to everyone!

Thank you! I hope you hear good news soon!

  17. I got this from UW this morning! I'm so glad to have heard something, but SO nervous about this interview. I have zero time to prepare....

Thank you for your interest in the University of Washington PhD in Social Welfare program.  I am writing to notify you that you have been selected for a phone interview with two faculty members from the PhD in Social Welfare Admissions Committee.

In order to facilitate the scheduling of the interview, I would appreciate it if you could  please let me know if you would be available tomorrow, Thursday, February 16th between 10-12 for a 20 minute phone interview.  Please let me know which 20 minute time slot works best for you within the 10-12 time frame.

We look forward to speaking with you this Thursday.

  18. @flowerthor maybe this will be helpful to you too. " You are not bothering me at all.  Thank you for your inquiry regarding your application and for your patience.  We are currently in the deliberation process and we hope to have decisions made by next week, since the director of the program is out of town. I'm also happy that you applied and I will let you know of the results as soon as they are confirmed. "

  19. 7 minutes ago, flowerthor said:

Yes I hope not too. But if you search "Social Welfare" in the results, it comes up. Also saw that someone got an interview with them back in Jan. :(

Ugh. At this point I just want the wait to be OVER.

I did get impatient and email someone on the steering committee on Friday.... she told me that she didn't think all the decisions would be out until mid or even late February so maybe we can still hold out hope? I agree though--it's tough to not lose a little hope.... Also please don't say the results will be out "mid-February, maybe earlier" unless you KNOW they are coming out before 2/15.....because that's just cruel. Ha.

  20. 9 hours ago, flowerthor said:

I saw someone's post on the "Results" page about getting accepted into UW's PhD program. So I'm assuming if you haven't heard back then it's a no?

Oh jeez, I hope not. I spoke with folks there on Friday and it didn't sound like they had made their decisions yet.

I also just checked the results page and I don't see anything from UW? Strange.
