Okay, that makes me feel a little better. I feel like we should be hearing something soon since they have notified the PhD students of acceptances and wait lists.

Should I do an unfunded MA?
ke6904 replied to Mr protagonist's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I'm not that experienced with this (it's my first application season) but I have sought tons of advice from professors about this issue. It is their recommendation, and mine, that you should NEVER pay for a graduate degree in English. The reasons for this are 1) You will never get the "take-back" from an English degree that would make your debt "worth it." I'm sure the job market is no secret to you, and even though so many of us are still willing to go "all in" and see what happens, we should NOT be going into debt trying to do it. 2) There are so many programs that will pay for your degree. You might have to wait a until next year, but it would still be worth it because of the funding. Not to mention, NYU is very pricey, and living in the city is excruciatingly expensive. -
Funded MA in literature program?
ke6904 replied to WendyWonderland's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Both University of Delaware and University of Connecticut have funded MA programs. They don't have spring deadlines though-- both are Dec. 1. for fall. -
Has anyone heard back from UConn's MA? I'm curious to know whether or not they notified MA students and none have posted on the results page.

UConn and March 15th

Yeah, I'm waiting to hear back from UConn regarding the MA program, but I also applied to a few programs that probably won't get back to me until that March 15th deadline. -

Haha you're right, although I may be afraid of the findings.. What are your research interests? -
This describes my life lately. I'm glad I'm not the only one. I don't know what your current situation is, but everytime I have cold feet I just think "Not only will this university PAY for your graduate education, they will PAY YOU to do it." For me, coming out of undergrad with an English degree, I think it would be stupid to not accept an offer, even if it means relocating and being separated with my significant other.

Yes! It takes a certain kind of person to be a Faulkner lover -
UConn and March 15th

Wow, I'm surprised UConn's deadline is March 15. This is my first application season, but aren't most deadlines universally April 15th? I think it's fair that you need more time to decide, but I have no clue how that will go over with the department. Maybe try speaking with Mary Udal? My experiences with her have been very pleasant. You're already in, so it can't hurt to just ask them. -

I love this! Right now I'm working on my undergraduate thesis-- it started out on Kate Chopin's The Awakening (seemingly cliche, I know) but focused mostly on the literary criticism of her novel, especially the way in which it was recovered. This project has evolved now to discuss E.D.E.N. Southworth, Michel Foucault, Theodore Roosevelt... etc. etc. etc. But, basically, as of right now, I'm interested in the invisible power (and "unfreedom) circulating throughout our country and the ways in which so many American novelists touch on that power through avenues of race, gender, sexuality, etc. It seems I'm mostly focusing on 19th Century authors right now, but I'm a huge Faulkner lover. -
I was accepted to Delaware's MA program as well, and I also applied to Stony Brook but didn't hear back yet. I've heard excellent things about Delaware's program and faculty as well as about Newark, DE and the campus itself. I honestly haven't heard much about Stony Brook.. but if it came between the two, I would probably pick Delaware. One of my letter writers got his PhD from there, and he says it is excellent. They have an awesome placement record and you get a lot of teaching experience there.

Anyone else applying to English programs??? Going crazy
ke6904 replied to Jocko's topic in Waiting it Out
I applied to Connecticut's MA in English, Delaware's MA in English, Albany's PhD in English, and Stony Brooks PhD in English. I honestly have no idea what my chances are-- I have a strong GPA, writing sample, statement and letters.. just not crazy about my scores.
