  1. Nada from Vandy or Tulane (I'm thinking Tulane unofficially waitlisted me). About to go visit Austin though and am very excited!
  2. Ferazel your friend IS doing well! Hah I wonder if that means the phone call from Tulane was to weed or check out folks they weren't sure of before sending out some more acceptances. I don't know that I gave a good enough interview to make it if they are weeding among candidates...if they are just doing a sanity/attitude check I might still make it though (if nothing else, I will claim that I am sane and have a good attitude! haha). At least I am not too worried because I have my acceptance from my one school. I'm thankful for that one early response! Wouldn't it be great is all the programs were quick and/or stuck to a predefined timeline so we knew when to expect news? I am sure you'll hear things soon though. At this point every day seems like people hear from some school...so I'm thinking there's got to be more news coming in the next week or two.
  3. Update: response from Vanderbilt is they are still deliberating. I wasn't given any kind of timeline (the email mentioned that they'd be in contact as soon as possible). So, not a lot of information...but at least I got a polite response to let me know that I wasn't forgotten ( ).
  4. I had a phone call with Tulane today! Actually a faculty member called me Fri, I missed it & tried to call back yesterday & missed him (oh phone tag), then the coordinator & head of dept called me today for what seemed like a (surprise!) phone interview. I think it went ok for me not being prepared at all... Did your friend hear accepted / not accepted already? I had the impression that they would deliberate then send decisions out "soon" (ai a couple weeks) - but maybe they've accepted some folks they were sure of already. Nikel, I haven't heard anything yet- no reply to my email... but merci et bon courage à vous aussi! If I do get a response I'll update!
  5. Ferazel, thanks - I did end up emailing the GPC after I posted that. I figured I'd have seen here or on the results search if someone frequenting Grad Cafe had heard, aaand I was getting impatient. Now I kind of wish I'd called, b/c with email I have to wait for a reply...ha. Live & learn! Sorry about Cornell, Carrot flowers. And to Paul Verlan: I would love to see a whole thread about foreign language grad program interviews! I found some good tips in the Interviews & Visits section of Grad Cafe but I'd also be interested to hear about other people's experiences with French interviews in particular. I had a skype interview early on with UT Austin, & a telephone interview with UGA so I can tell you about those - hope it helps. Both interviews lasted 15-20 min each, which is not a lot of time! My self-criticism was that I thought sometimes I took too long to get to the point of their questions. That's not to say to be short with your answers though, it was just my personal experience - having been to interviews that are typically an hour, this was definitely quick and to the point! Both had about 4 faculty members present and they went around taking turns to ask questions. UT faculty asked more general questions like, what made me interested in their program, tell us about your research and research interests, why did I want to pursue this degree/higher ed in French, etc., and the interview was mostly in English. One of the questions was in French with no warning . UGA (this was for the MA mind you, ymmv) informed me the interview would be completely in French and last 15-20 minutes and address my academic interests and teaching experience. They introduced themselves in English then switched to French for the questions, which were more targeted to (duh) my academic interests & teaching experience- They asked specifically about some of the things I'd mentioned on my c.v. and application. Both asked me for my questions at the end. Gotta go - good luck tomorrow!!
  6. Anyone heard anything from Vanderbilt? I'm not exactly holding my breath but.... it would be great to know when I can expect some kind of decision. Thinking about emailing but thought I'd see if anyone else had before I begin to "pester"
  7. Thanks carrot_flowers & Bellifontaine! It is an unbelievable feeling to have what I wanted materialize. French Studies.
  8. I heard back this from UTexas (after a skype interview a week ago) with an admittance and fellowship - YES!! In other news, UGA has sent invites for telephone interviews to be held, but nothing at all yet from Vanderbilt, or from Tulane or UF (but the app deadlines haven't yet passed for those two); so that's my report. Hope you all continue to hear back & get good news! Seems like it's starting to heat up.
  9. LOL! Yes. I mean, I'll take a compliment any way I can get it, but hearing this just makes me want to give them the Professor McGonagall stare...
  10. Congrats on the good news to those of you with interviews & acceptances! It is exciting to begin hearing things! I've got a Skype interview scheduled with one school Tuesday which I'm considering great news since it means I made the first cut. Another school emailed to say they will contact applicants for interviews in the language of study in late Jan/early Feb, so I hope to hear from them soon too. I haven't heard from the other schools I'm applying to, but some of their deadlines haven't even passed, so I'm not worried. Yet. Just worried about my interview! I want it to go so well! I have definitely never interviewed in French...or on Skype.
  11. I haven't been on the forum in a while and am excited to see this thread has come to life in my absence...Yay for other francophiles undergoing grad school applications! Carrot flowers, thanks for your input in regard to UT-Austin, it's good to hear a positive impression of the department. I may not have done a very good job describing my interests here (oh no! I hope my personal statement does a better job!) ; but I really am quite interested in UT faculty members' work (from what I can see that they've published on) and there are several people I could see myself working with. Francophile1, thanks for your input on the Floridas and Boston College! I ended up not applying there (BC), mainly because of location, but did apply to UF. I was so close to applying to FSU too, but I just couldn't bring myself to add another to my list and it got cut (so darn expensive to apply to schools! not to mention time-consuming and stressful haha). Nikel, I'm so glad you provided the info about Vanderbilt!! It's good to know (well, maybe it's bad to know...) that Vandy will accept 2 students. Such a small number...I wish I could tell you about the programs/campuses you mention, but I really haven't had experience with any of those places. I did visit Vanderbilt a few years ago and had an overall favorable impression. And just to update--I ended up applying to U of Texas, Vanderbilt, U of Georgia, U of Florida, and Tulane, and I will possibly also apply to University of North Texas. Btw, in regard to when we might hear things...UGA notified me that they begin doing phone interviews in late Jan/early Feb with applicants. (That seems really soon to me!) I'm freaking out a little!
  12. Cou cou Anyone out there applying to French graduate programs for Fall 2014?
  13. Thanks! It's great to hear about the department from a student in it and I appreciate your answering my questions. Your answers fall mostly in line with my expectations for the program, so overall good. It is a little disappointing to hear course selection in grad-level French is limited, but taking courses in related department(s) is something I wanted to do anyway, so I can definitely work with that. Thanks again.
  14. I think it depends on the application (software?) that the school uses. I started but have not submitted all 5 of my apps: 3 sent requests out as soon as I added the recommender's info and they say something like "in progress," as stated above, BUT 2 apps state that they don't send the requests until the application is submitted (to my frustration!). So now I'm rushing to finish those 2 since I told my recommenders that they'd be receiving all these emails...
  15. Bonjour M, I think I did read some of the thread you created, and remembered there was a U of Florida person around here. Thanks for saying hi! Wow about Vandy...I can't believe they has no further positions/funding! I mean, I believe you, but wow. I do appreciate you telling me that - I hope the program isn't shutting down in some way. In any case, I won't be shocked if I don't get an offer. I decided just this past week to definitely apply to University of Florida and University of Georgia, and I feel really good about U of Fl and the answers I've gotten so far regarding the program. And now I have access to a grad student...(hmmm! Questions! Oh and you're right, I'd be the Lit rather than Linguistics group)...I am not even really sure what to ask. Okay, got it: 1. Flexibility? : How much support/independence do grad students get in choosing their foci, their research projects, their classes (so maybe if an area of interest isn't explicitly offered as part of the required coursework, could one opt do an individual study or seminar type of class in order to study a particular theme/topic? How many grad level courses are offered per term - have you ever had problems with there not being one suited to your interests?). 2. Extra-currics? : How is the area as far as French-related events or groups (I thought maybe I remembered UF having a Table Française), etc.? Speaking of which, are students encouraged (and able to fit in time) to go to academic conferences or publish papers (maybe that's more a ph.d. thing, but...it can't hurt to set the goals for myself - would that be realistic?)?
