  1. I had a professor who also took a considerable amount of time to write her letter. She also didn't respond to my e-mails for weeks, which had me anxious during the whole process! I even tried calling but her number is conveniently disconnected. However, I am really close friends with one of her grad students and said grad student was nice to ask her in person about it for me. Sometimes professors who are far in their tenure are very lazy when it comes to letters of recommendation.
  2. Hi guys! I was wondering, for those who took courses at a post bacc (out of fielders) at USU or any other place, where you able to take some basic science requirements? I have been unable to schedule Physical & Biological sciences into my schedule and so I may need to take them
  3. It went well. Luckily, the interviewer was Puerto Rican as well so it felt comfortable. Some questions were more about latino populations in general, so I'm going to guess it is based on proficiency
  4. Right now, I'm applying to very few programs - with only one offering a bilingual focus. Spanish is my native language, so I have no problems maintaining it. I am trying to maintain French & Portuguese by working with international students who come to study English in my school. I would suggest taking more courses and/or keep yourself immersed in the language. Finally, language is not the only factor to take into account of as a bilingual SLP. Latinos, for example, have a different perception of how they take care of their families and how they view disabilities, so there's a cultural factor to note there.
  5. So I got an e-mail a few days ago from Indiana University - Bloomington that they were going to interview me on the phone this thursday. The interview is in Spanish, which I assume I'll pass with flying colors (on the proficiency part), but what kind of questions should I expect? Also, I have a strong Puerto Rican accent, should I switch to standard just in case? Vocabulary/pronounciation-wise Spanish varies a lot from culture to culture.
  6. Hi guys! I was wondering if your resumés were composed of more than one page or not. I've done maaaaany things during undergrad but my Career Center advises people (at least when applying for jobs) that it needs to be one page. What do you guys think/what did you guys do?
  7. While talking to the program director of one of the schools I'm interested in, I've been uncomfortably even more aware of the fact that I'm a minority in the field not only field-wise, but in terms of race too. I knew that our field attracts a certain demographic but is this completely accidental? are minority groups (men, asian, hispanic, african-american, etc) not really attracted to our field? Is there an explanation for this? I know this can be an uncomfortable subject in the US but I wanted to learn more about the diversity of our field. Is this changing?
  8. Hi guys! I have many potential letter writers. I'm an out of field major and I need advice on which would be the best letters to apply with. 1. Psychology neurolinguistics professor - she is currently my advisor for my UG thesis. She has known me throughout all my undergraduate career since I have worked in her lab for four years. She knows me well on my research side and my knowledge in neurolinguistics. 2. Portuguese professor - I did really awesome in his classes and he can speak of my academic/language skills. He told me he'd write the best letter ever because he considers me an excellent student. However, I'm not sure how relevant his letter would be to our field. 3. SLP I observed - she is a bilingual SLP and I've observed her for a little over one semester. It's probably the closest I've got in the field and I've observed her sessions in both English and Spanish. I've been very active during observation hours, so hopefully she would write a strong letter. --- Possible letter writers: 1. Linguistics professor - I've taken her course this semester (Child/Adult lang acqui) and she has been very supportive in helping me look out for my research interests. I've only known her for a semester though, I'm not sure how strong of a letter she would be. 2. French professor - I took three classes with her and she's always praised me as a student. However, it's been about a year or two since I last spoke with her and I'm not sure how relevant her letter is. What do you guys think?
  9. I found out I have an AW score of 4.0, would that offset the other two scores?
  10. If it's a Jan 15 deadline, you should take it on or before January 1st. At least for the computer generated test, it takes about 10-15 days to be delivered.
  11. I just took the computer-based GRE score and unfortunately was overwhelmed by school and other matters to study adequately. The computer test said I got Q-143 and V-150, which I think I could do better if I took it again. However since I'm out of field, I'm considering taking a gap year and work in France, where I most likely will get accepted to teach in. I wouldn't be applying for many schools since I need to take pre-reqs. Should I retake it in December for the Jan 15 deadline? Or should I just apply to 1 or 2 schools with these scores and if not accepted, take a year off? Any thoughts?
  12. Hey guys, question: would a course in astronomy count as a physical science requirement? I love astronomy as a physical science but I'm not sure how specific does it have to be.
  13. Does anyone want to look over my draft for application? I'm an out of field major, but since they offer a 3-year program, and I know the faculty pretty well, I'm still considering my alma matter. Thanks to anyone who decides to do so
  14. Hi guys! I'm observing a bilingual speech therapist in my town and I want to give her simple and sweet christmas gift for letting me observe her work. Any ideas? I thought this card was cute: https://www.etsy.com/listing/200235325/thank-you-card-for-speech-therapist-5x7?ref=market ...but I'm not a parent of any of her clients... Any ideas?
  15. There's probably many many threads on this. I'm looking into this school but I'm afraid of its competitiveness (at least in the Master's level). The reason I'm so interested in this school is because they have a M.A/Ph.D portion and there's actually a faculty member/lab I really want to do research with, it's also probably a few in the country that have what I'm looking for. I'm interested in bilingualism and SLI. Has anyone been admitted to this school with less than stellar stats, like mine? They said I needed to apply for PhD and not Master's level and if Asha EdFind is right, they admit at least half of their applicants. I would probably not apply this year and just get a second bachelor's instead to increase competitiveness.
  16. Does anyone know if they look at only upper-division (300-400 level courses, as opposed to 100-200 level courses) or literally the last 60 units of your transcript? I took 300-400 but I also took lower levels that were specific to SLP since I'm out of field. What would count?
  17. I'm sure a lot of people with very excellent GPAs and GREs were probably able to apply and get accepted. If you have any other experiences that led you to your decision, it could also make a great story for your statement of purpose. Personally, I don't have a lot of 'speech' related experience (aside from observation hours) but I do have teaching/experience with internationals which I could somehow relate to the field. That would probably help.
  18. Actually, I don't think it was too clear because it was going along with the discussion on financial aid. I think the highest I can pull would be a 3.5 by the time I graduate. Of course, postbacc is an option as well and I do have a plan B but I'm just worried about the information we're getting at Asha EdFind.
  19. Hi guys! So I don't have the best stats to get accepted (look below) at grad school confidently. I've been looking at my alma matter's GPA stats, and they say they have accepted 3.32-4.00 in 2014, which gave me a little hope. However, when I went to the MA information day, they said they generally look at GPAs from 3.7 and up and may cut down much below that. is it ASHA Edfind really that reliable? I'm beginning to lose hope for anything even if I do complete SLP pre-reqs :/
  20. God, I'm so nervous about applying, because it's only the beginning of anxiety attacks of whether I get in or not. At the same time, I'm pretty excited because I know exactly what to do. Either way, I have several variations of plan B that I'm also excited to pursue. I want to work in Early Intervention and with children with all kinds of backgrounds. I also want to pursue research, however I'm thinking that I'll go into clinical Master's and just do a research project on the side. Is anyone doing a PhD? I'm still deciding this.
  21. I say it's worth it. I'm going to be an intern at the Intensive English Institute at my school to get more experience in diversity/multicultural populations. I'm thinking if I don't get in I'll be teaching English abroad in order to learn about language education from other countries as well as learn other languages to expand a future clientele
  22. So, question: For financial aid qualifying for post-bacc at Utah State, did most people have to take out more loans?
  23. I'm actually considering this and also to create bilingual programs for the graduate schools. One of my professors told me you could get your C's and a PhD and do both research and clinical work to the side. I wouldn't pursue a PhD unless academia was in your mind at some point. For me, I'm interested in researching bilingualism/multilingualism on speech and language development
  24. Spanish - aside from my very biased preference to it as a native speaker, I'm not surprised if Cali had more Spanish speakers in need of these services. ASL would be nice if you were to specialize it.
  25. Hi guys, I know that you can work as an SLPA but it seems a bit difficult to get licensed for me in Illinois (oh how I'd love to do bilingual SLPA work - but oh well). I was considering getting a CNA license through my local community college and work as a CNA in hospitals/nursing homes if all else fails in my applications while getting a an SLP post-bacc. Do you guys think that experience would be helpful on my application?
