Definitely something I've thought about- don't have to worry about the bearing children bit, but unsure whether it'd be 'appropriate' to ask my fiancee about the prospects of children while I'm attending graduate school. Certainly want kids at some point though. One of the faculty at my institution had a child after she gained tenure, both her and her husband are late 30's/early 40's tenured faculty an the move makes sense to me but thats a long wait an then there's thinking about having kids into your older age (50's - 60's).

Perhaps this is wrong, but I almost feel like I have a moral obligation to have children. Discouraging to see many of my former f***-up high school classmates with multiple children. Irrational fear that the movie Idiocracy (2006) is predicting the future.

Edit: This was apparently unclear but what I meant by appropriate was that having children while I'm pursuing a PhD program would likely mean more work for my significant other as my focus would not be on children but on academic success. Physically speaking with her is not the issue, the issue is roles and responsibilities of parenthood while focusing on other endeavors. I like to think I'd be a good father, but my focus would not be on kids despite wanting kids, until I'm done with the program.

It was about how the events that occur offstage affect the narrative. I found it very interesting. And I appreciate that he grounds his theory in physics (as a person who doesn't understand physics very well, but would like to). I picked it up when deciding whether or not to apply to BC. While it isn't something that aligns closely with my own research, I think it's a great resource. You might want to pick up a copy to help with your decision!

I really hope this person has an English or Communications degree. Assuming the response was spontaneous, this comment makes me feel like I write like an idiot.

I'm sure this is going to go over like a lead balloon here but: alcoholic beverages. They don't taste that good (or at least not as good as beverages without alcohol) and I don't like my brain feeling fuzzy (I've never been drunk, but I suspect I'd be a mean one). We're so obsessed with alcohol as culture (wine tours! craft beers!) and honestly I just don't get it.

I completely agree. I think one can strongly disagree with Mamet's politics and still enjoy his plays because they are set up exactly as you say -- as conversations that show both sides to an issue.

So nice to have a discussion with another drama scholar! But I've hijacked this thread long enough so I'll stop now.

My doctor is the worst, and apparently unwilling to actually speak with me unless I make an appointment. When I was uninsured, my free clinic doctor used to personally call me with test results and follow-ups. If a free clinic physician can do it, why can't a well paid employee of a well known health clinic take the time?!?! This is why people trust the internet more than their own highly trained medical professionals.

Just a friendly reminder that (99% of) professors who are willing to write you letters of rec genuinely believe in you and your talents, and aren't let down or disappointed if you do not manage to get into a program. If anything, they're disappointed in adcomms - absolutely not you.

And remember, there are endless reasons why a qualified candidate may not get into a program. Each program doesn't advertise what variety of students they're potentially looking for in a particular cohort. For instance, if last year they took 3 Victorianists, and there are 2 or 3 in their 3rd year, and 2 more in their 5th, odds are they will be looking to fill in other another area of concentration with faculty who have fewer students at this point in time. It's not a hard and fast rule, but definitely one of the larger factors in some programs.

Ugh. Think this may be the worst part of the whole thing. It's so awkward. You're trying not to sound let down and they're trying to sound optimistic. It was especially hard for me this second time around because it's like "Well, I guess your confidence in me was sorely misplaced. Again." But whatever. At least I'm not on an endless waitlist this year -- last year I had to wait until April 15th to officially let people know.
