    Ann Arbor, MI

I'm reposting this because I never got a response. Hope you gals/guys can help!
  2. I am still waiting for a decision (currently on the wait list) from Michigan State's BioMolecular Science Program. While I've already accepted University of Michigan's offer, I am simply curious if I will get accepted into MSU or not. Ironically, looks like I may be rejected from all schools except for my top choice. What schools are you waiting to hear from?
  3. Have you tried talking to current grad schools at these programs? Ask them what they like/don't like about the program and living there. Additionally ask how their expectations of the program have been met/haven't been met. In my experience, grad students are happy to share their experiences.
  4. I'm moving with my long-term partner (6 years) across country, too. This is our second move together, but I feel bad that he is sacrificing to move this time. However, there are many more opportunities in Ann Arbor than where we currently live, so hopefully it will be good move for him too. I'm definitely going to make sure that we have time to hang out together, but also that we have time to oursevles, which is equally important. Best of luck to everyone with their moves!
  5. If the department recommended you, I don't see why you wouldn't get officially accepted by the graduate school. FYI - I waited about a week between departmental acceptance and official acceptance to the graduate school via email to UMich.
  6. Woo Congrats!!!!! So excited for you!!
  7. My PhD advisor is only 2 years older than me, and will be a very interesting dynamic.

Thanks! I'm a little bit of an older student (i'll be 30 in October) and she's at the beginning of her career. i'm actually really excited how close in age we are. I think i will feel really comfortable with her ie if i'm totally freaking out and feel like I have no idea what I'm doing, i'll tell her. :)

Oh, ok! I am 20, so it would be a bit weird for me to have a 22 year old advisor. You will be fine! Just embrace your opportunity... it's MICHIGAN!!!!!!!

That sounds like it could be really cool! Hope it turns out well :)

  8. 10 months will go by fast and especially if you only have to do it 2 days a week. Will you have better job opportunities with a MSW from UT?
  9. I'm still in shock (after 2+ weeks) that i'm going to UMich and that I'm good enough to go there.
  10. Allergies...sigh.

  11. Congrats did you just apply to masters programs then?
  12. 6.9 Earthquake ~10 miles from my house about an hour ago. Still shaken up, not sure how i'm going to be able to sleep tonight! Suprisingly nothing fell...

PhDerp - thanks! Everything is fine. No huge damage in the surrounding area so all is good! :) I eventually fell asleep last night, but had acid indigestion due to my nerves!

  13. Do you need a PhD for EE? If you're not going into academia or something that requires a PhD, I think the masters program would be appropriate. However, having a great relationship with a PI is very important and since you loved it - it may be a better place for you. Best of luck!!!
  14. I am sending out announcements with a current picture on it. sending a we're moving is a great idea to send with it too! Thanks!
  15. haha well.... that's what i'm trying to get! I have never asked for money, but I was hoping since I am getting my BS soon and that I'm going to grad school at a really awesome school, they'll congratulate me with money.
  16. I am thinking about sending out grad announcements to my huge extended family in hopes that they will send me money. I am moving 3000 miles away for grad school this summer and could really use the extra cash. How can I ask for money tactfully?
  17. I've been wearing canvas shoes for the better part of my life. No matter what shoes I try to venture off to, I end up going back to canvas shoes for every day wear. I'm trying to find a replacement for Vans and Converse - I love both, but they just don't last with daily wear. With Vans I always end up with holes near my toes, and the soles on Converse always end up with holes. I wore Keds a lot when I was a kid, but I remember them being really uncomfortable to break in. I'm considering trying out PF Flyers as they seem to be much more durable and comfortable when compared to Converse. I really like these: http://bit.ly/PdKlMP What are your favorite canvas shoes? Any recommendations?
  18. I'm struggling to stay productive during my last semester as an undergrad. I've worked so hard up until this moment to get good grades, now all I care about is just passing. I am so ready to move on to the next phase of my life. However, I've gotta refocus myself so I can get a bunch of research done and finish up this semester with a bang. I just don't want to. lol. such internal struggle
  19. These are questions you could and should ask the grad coordinator and your potential advisor.
  20. I think it depends on what your goals are. If you have your heart set on a PhD (and leads to your desired career), then do research for a year and try again next year. Perhaps you didn't apply to places that were a good fit or you didn't develop any relationships with potential PI's. Remember masters are typically unfunded, but they do seem easier to get in. If you teach the whole time, it will take you up too 3-3.5 years to finish. Best of luck making a decision.
  21. So much good news today. Congrats everyone on their acceptances!
  22. I did horrible on GRE (150V, 145 Q, 2A). I really don't test well (especially standardized tests) and need lots of time to write well. I got in to a wonderful school with these scores, so it's not impossible. However the rest of my application was really strong and I'm sure that helped make up the difference. I also developed a really good relationship with my future PI during the application process. I don't know if schools have higher expectations of international students or not for GRE. Best of luck.
  23. I'm sure the schools understand when international students can't make it to their interview weekends, and I highly doubt that affects your application. Have you had phone/skype interviews with your schools instead?
  24. Wahoo! Congrats!! Bet it feels good to finally hear some good news!
