Get married after you started grad school?
downtownchick replied to a fragrant plant's topic in The Lobby
Does anybody know if your funding gets slashed if, for example, your fiance(e) is not in school and makes a lot more money than you when you get married during grad school? Not saying I see a wedding coming up or something but it's nice to know just in case. -
For those of you who are now working on a permanent position, when do you plan to tell your employer that you’re attending in fall this year? I have just gotten my first informal acceptance from a prof via email. An hour before this, somebody announced in my work meeting that they were moving me up to a higher position. It had been in the works for a while but I had no idea it would come yesterday. My employer paid a lot to recruit me and train me so now I am feeling the guilt. In which month do you plan to tell them? As soon as you have decided where to go? April? May? Or just go the 2-week notice route?

Have just seen somebody post acceptance on result page. I think I'm off. Oh well. -
One less thing to obsessively check: Application website?
downtownchick replied to Bryan's topic in Waiting it Out
2nd. 90% of the departments I apply to do not update on the application sites. They all say nothing was received while on email the secretaries say everything arrived. -
Email printouts?! That's scary!

I put my name and what the document is on the header or footer, e.g., "Downtown Chick (tab) Writing Sample (tab) Fall 2010". No cover sheet whatsoever unless specifically instructed.

Embark Application System for LORs
downtownchick replied to fancypants09's topic in Letters of Recommendation
Embark works fine with all my profs. -
I would completely forget about the flakes and ask somebody else to write one right now if it were me, even if that's a summer-job employer, a high school teacher or a tutor. Whatever you can get. Have that backup person email the recommendation to the school immediately so the school will look at your application. It's not perfect, but at least the school will look at your application that way. Why not!

What to do with the pets when in grad school?
downtownchick replied to downtownchick's topic in The Lobby
I wasn't as concerned about letting the dog out and run around as medical expenses. Pet insurance won’t help much since preexisting conditions are not covered. But you guys have good ideas. Yeah, I can deal with saving, emergency credit card and mooching. I guess we'll cross that bridge when we come to it. Thank so much, you sympathetic people. -

So sorry for your loss, Pamphilia... -
I'm a radio host. I also sing in small concerts, bikini-model for photographers, MC in Chinese weddings, translate and do IT work for a chain animal hospital group. Yeah, anything that pays.

I have a senior sick dog. I’ve just shelled out five grand to buy her a life-saving surgery. She’s laying in her little sick bed recovering right now. She has 2 medical conditions that need chronic disease management. I spent over $25,000 on her in the past two years over three specialists, a few emergency room visits, tests and all that jazz already. Honestly, sometimes when I read through pages and pages of her vet bills, I feel my heart is about to stop beating any second. I’m just another girl in literature, not so good with money. I have been having an okay income from working 3 gigs in entertainment and IT. I can’t imagine what I can do if I don’t make as much as now to support her if I get in to the schools I apply. What do you guys plan to do with the high-maintenance pets after getting in?

Literature GRE scores from 7 November
downtownchick replied to Venetia's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I took it on Nov 7. I only have the raw scores and percentages online. No # of answer right or wrong. -
Hello, has anyone experienced this? A reference asks me to give her a draft of recommendation. How do I write the draft like a prof? Any idea? The reason why she's asking is that she's actually my language instructor, not a prof per se. I have left school for many years so she's the next best person to ask except an employer. It's a long shot but I'm trying.

Could anybody suggest a good ranking table of Comp Lit PhDs? I'd like to include some "safe schools" and am quite lost. I don't know any of them. I have just seen this site and feel totally late to the party. How do I find programs that are in the bottom :?: I have some strong, some week parts in my applications and am as desperate to quit my job and go back to school next year as I'll even go to the small public university near my house for just an MA in English (no money of course) if I find nothing. I have left school for ten years and must put a stop to wasting my time and go back to finish my business. My specialization is trauma. I can live without stipend if the school is near a big city (maybe send the boyfriend to work and pay rent). Please help me. Thank you in advance!
