  1. Hey fellow UCSD admits! I just thought we should have a place to come together, chat, and introduce ourselves before we meet down at the open house. My name is Taylor, and my main field is IR. Right now I'm interested in all things conflict, but I'm most interested in conflict termination (though I'm sure that's going to change a lot). I'm coming straight out of undergrad having taken only two political science courses (Intro. and International), so I'm kind of nervous of making an idiot of myself and having to play catch-up. I mostly studied Econ, but found the field too dry and realized my passion for PoliSci a bit late during a guest lecture in my Economic Development class. I study right now in Northern California (Stockton), but I'm originally from down south in Ventura County (about 2.5 hrs north of San Diego). I'm excited to come back to the best weather in the country! My boyfriend of 5 years is going to try to get transfered down there as soon as he can, and I'm curious if there's any other couples/families moving together.
  2. Acceptance to any one program is not a good predictor of acceptance to another. In the end, with all of your stats and figures, acceptance to any program within a given year is still a crap shoot. Are there any professors that are interested in your research plans after a couple years? Are there cutbacks due to budgets? Did your app get read on a bad day or right after a stellar candidate? Perhaps nobody at the program you applied to has heard of your LOR, but they have a random connection elsewhere! These are the things I tell myself so that I don't take my rejections personally.
  3. Also rejected by Yale ::shrug:: To the UCSD funding waiters, I got an e-mail from Ms. Evangelista and she slipped in this little comment: I am hoping they did this so that our funding can remain fairly stable! I'm itching to hear from them so I can see whether or not I can afford to live off campus.
  4. Don't play semantics (diction?) with me! (PS I love puns)
  5. I didn't, but I'm assuming it's the one you applied to. I doubt they'd change an Americanist to a Methodist.
  6. I am very pleased to let you know that your application to the Ph.D. program in Political Science at UCSD was enthusiastically approved by the Admissions Committee. I AM FREAKING OUT RIGHT NOW! I DID NOT EXPECT THIS IN ANY WAY! I just found out four minutes ago in the middle of my econometrics class and the shock on my face caught my teachers attention and made me tell the whole class what was up! I can sleep again. PS "We will be in contact with you soon with more information on the open house. In addition, I will be sending you a letter with the terms of our financial offer on or before March 1. "
  7. I'm lucky I have an in at Toms Shoes!
  8. Trust me...even when you've already heard back from one, it doesn't help with the nerves.
  9. This is good to hear, as I was the idiot who threw almost all of his eggs into the UC basket.
  10. I'm going to work for Toms Shoes.
  11. lolz omg 64 ppl reading topic now! :o :o :o In all seriousness, I'm freaking out. I just need to hear from UCSD, but then again I don't want to have my dreams crushed into a find powder and blown away by the Santa Ana winds before my eyes. Congrats to everyone today who got good news. For those of us waiting in silence, let us mourn together.
  12. Woot woot! IR! I'm interested in conflict in general. The whys and the why nots. The how to prevent and how to terminate. I never actually noticed the connection between my languages as axis powers! I took German in High School, and the program was cut while I was in it. I became bitter and switched to Japanese and studied in Japan in college (a move I regret), but I am pretty interested in European war history. What about you!? (I was learning Italian with Rosetta stone for a little while too! This is a little creepy...)
  13. I live south of Sacramento, so mine should arrive tomorrow. I'm still holding out for a waitlist. I had this dream that my acceptance was given to some really cool IR professor who is so hip and cool that he's also really laid-back and just forgot to call me.
  14. This is all so exciting! Congratulations to those who have gotten positive news! To everyone else, we shall continue to wait in baited breath together! *holds hands*
  15. I think we should collect these snarky sentences that they obviously crafted just to mess with our news-hungry minds.
  16. PoliSci appliers: Unite!
  17. I'm regionless, and I say Middle East is more common than East Asia. But this may be because everybody seems to be applying to study democratization in the Middle East.
  18. I'm curious what programs they're all applying for!
  19. Sorry, I misinterpreted your prior pessimism.
  20. FTW! What are your top choices?
  21. I don't think they've necessarily started yet. It just sounds to me (from above) that they're ready to start informing any day now. Who knows what they do first, send acceptances/rejections/reccomendations! Since nobody has posted any acceptances or rejections on the results page, I think we can still hope!
  22. I read Shakespeare when I'm on the can and Dave Barry when I'm struggling to sleep/am bored.
  23. I think this is true for most of the time, but then there are some programs that will only fund in-state tuition. Like UCDavis only gives fellowships up to in-state tuition, so in their mind, an out-of stater is the same cost all else held constant. But then you have to consider if they consider that that little extra financial strain could increase the chance of dropout, etc.
