  1. Sounds like they're turning it into the GMAT, which is a shame, because I aced the GMAT and did OK on the GRE after I changed my plans for graduate school. If only they changed it this year...>.> They finally realized that knowing the definition to words that, if you used, would alienate your audience is not a good measure of verbal skills.
  2. My recommenders told me that a lot of schools really like students right out of undergrad, because they think they can basically mold them to be the little research minions they want. They can make us think, feel, and live how they want us to.
  3. Just wait until you get tenured. The tat up everything.
  4. EUGH! I HATE ETS! You have to pay $20 for each school you want to inform, then they give away your scores and GPA to schools from nowhere so you get all these e-mails inviting you to apply to placed that don't even have programs you're looking for! Why does it cost so much to send a tiny piece of information when they're also giving them away for free!? From what I understand, most of the schools receive a CD with reported scores on them. Then they get these CDs two or three times a month. Can you imagine a couple hundred people on one CD? Those couple hundred paid $20 each to get a few bytes of space on that disk! That's the most expensive CD ever made. Market power is a bitch.
  5. According to US News... The specific rankings of mine are: 1, 1, 6, 7, 11, 24 I really only have one safety school, but that's because I don't want to go out of California for a safety school, and Davis is really the only OK safety school for me in California.
  6. Honestly, all of my professors and advisors right now are telling me to just ignore any page limits and send your best work. They won't read the whole thing anyway, so if it's too long, they'll stop when they want to.
  7. I'm applying to seven, and it's going to cost me an arm and a leg. I did course work at three schools, so transcript costs are through the roof! All of them are PhD, but there aren't that many terminal masters programs in Political Science that I could find. Most say that your goal must be a doctorate.
  8. HELLO! I am looking mostly at Top 10 International Relations programs. My GPA is 3.7 and my GRE Verb/Quant is 600/780. Since my GPA and Verbal are a little low, I need a killer SOP! Most of the programs I am applying to say to keep it between 500-1000 words, and mine is 730. However, I still think it is a little wordy and the language is a little "flowery" for the social sciences. I would really appreciate anyone looking it over and suggesting edits. I'd be more than happy to return the favor. Please PM me if you are willing to help! Thanks!

  10. Thanks for all the advice! Sorry I didn't post that I was looking for programs in International and Comparative Politics with a focus on conflict and security. I'll be working on my SOP this weekend, and I'll probably share it here for some more feedback!
  11. I just got back from my GRE test and got the following score. The percentiles are taken from Wikipedia...I won't get the actual numbers until later: V: 600 (85%) Q: 780 (90%) I am pretty sure I'll get a 6.0 on the AWA (I did when I took the GMAT, and I know that my essays were good). My other stats are: Concurrent Degrees: BA International Affairs and Commerce BS Applied Economics GPA: 3.6 (with a strong upward trend ) Study Abroad in Japan for a Semester Nothing less than an A in all of my ECON courses. Will have taken all three calculus courses offered (I've gotten an A in calc 1 and probably will in calc 2 too) My school is a small private known pretty well in IR (University of the Pacific: School of Int'l Studies) but isn't the most prestigious institution. My advisors are telling me to apply to the top programs (Berkeley, Stanford, Harvard, Yale, UCSD, UCLA). They think I can get in, but now I'm worried about my Verbal score. Should I cram and take the GRE again, or is my time better spent focusing on my SOP?
  12. So I took both of the official GRE computer adaptive tests that you can download off their website. I was basing my scores on the Kaplan practice tests. The first time I took it, I got a V/Q score of 520/760...and the second time I got 560/800. Which is weird, because when I took the GMAT, I had to hardcore study for its math section (but I think the GMAT math is much harder than the GRE math). So now my question is. How important is the verbal? What should be my benchmark if I can pull off a perfect quant? Thanks!
  13. Early this year my plan was to go to business school and enter the foreign service, but after studying abroad, I came to the realization that it wasn't for me and rediscovered my passion for international politics. So, in Feb. I took the GMAT and got the 98th Percentile. I've taken a few official GRE practice tests and am (confusingly) scoring around the 60th percentile region...I guess the test does not mesh with my style very well. Are there any programs accept the GMAT as a substitution? Also, if in an "additional information" section of the application I explain how I have had only two months to prepare for the GRE but got the 98th percentile on another nationalized standardized test, do you think they would take that into consideration? Thanks!
