  1. Which mmo, if you don't mind saying? I am currently loving SWTOR, and have played many since EQ. I have noticed a downward spiral in the social norms and etiquette of mmos from eq to current mmos, and also (like yourself) have mused over possible reasons / general changes in societal interaction based on varying degrees of public/private/anonymity. I am a lurker on the philosophy forum. My area is East Asian Studies. But I always come here to read the threads simply because the "elitism" being thrown around is entertaining. Trolls abound, and feeders of the trolls are plentiful, which makes for very good time-killing while I nurse my morning coffee. Most of the other disciplines forums are dull to read through -- supportive, interested, and embracing of the community. I guess if it all gets rolled into one thread, I won't have to search as much to find the good stuff, but that's half the fun...
  2. Grats, gimmethatfunding!! That's terrific news. Based on your username, I'd say they have an obligation to award you the FLAS. But really, no idea how to gauge who receives FLAS. Good luck, I hope you get it -- it's a fantastic award. What language are you continuing / starting?
  3. Thanks, Ragunz! And yeah, definitely still a chance we'll see each other at UIUC Yeah, I heard through email - first from my potential advisor, then from the department. But that was a couple weeks ago now, and some people are just recently being notified, so it seems they aren't sending out all notices at once. Good luck!
  4. Hahaha, I hear ya.....every time EAS / EALC MA or PhD goes up on the results board, I check the school and think "I could have known by now...." Even worse, though, is when a school you applied to sends out results (either good or bad), and you got nothing...makes the wait intolerable.
  5. Thanks, MastersHoping! Yeah, the winters will be harsh, but I grew up in Minnesota, so it'll feel like (a warm) home =p Today was busy for me...just received news from Berkeley: I am on their waitlist (for the Asian Studies MA)! I am super thrilled
  6. Heyas Ragunz, Congrats! I'm also sitting on an acceptance from UIUC (EALC MA/PHD track), and am pretty excited about getting it. Was the first place I heard from a couple weeks ago. Then a dry spell until today: Heard from U of Michigan ALC PhD -- they forwarded my app to their MA program, which was a bummer (but still great, since they didn't throw out my app altogether, haha). Since I applied to a couple PhD programs while only holding a BA in EAS, I didn't really expect to get acceptances. Good luck to all, and christ, I hope to hear something more from my other schools soon! The wait is killing me.
  7. Hobbies: MMOs (ever since EQ, currently SWTOR) Reading (currently The Luminaries by Eleanor Catton) Music (recently absorbing CHVRCHES and RE-TROS [Rebuilding the Rights of Statues 重塑雕像的权利]) TV series (watching "The Killing" / "True Detective" / "Walking Dead") Movies (last saw "Gravity", hated it / "Europa Report", loved it)
  8. Congratulations, Nong! If that's an acceptance, haha... Not really sure where I stand with Berkeley then. I also applied for the Asian studies MA, but I didn't get a rejection notice (when several were posted last week), but also haven't heard acceptance yet. Seems like they have a mysterious way of handling decisions and notifications
  9. Got a feeling that peeps'll hear something today. No reason for this (other than pure hope driven by the insanity of the wait, and probably accentuated by the amount of coffee I've already had this morning). Good luck to all!
  10. The problem is they ended a sentence with a preposition! "You did not make the list of students we are making offers to." But seriuosly, it reads like "fit" may be the issue. They aren't saying that you are not qualified for their program, but instead that other applicants just fit their area better. Overall, not a bad rejection letter. ...Except for ending a sentence with a preposition!
  11. Grats MastersHoping on SUNY Binghamton! Gotta feel great to know that you will be going somewhere next semester Sent you a PM about your SoP, also.
  12. Hey Tomoe, good luck during the interview weekend! I applied to Stanford, but for MA - you are applying for phd programs, right? I haven't heard anything yet (from anywhere /cry), but super pleased to see interviews and acceptances rolling out for fellow EAS peeps.
  13. Saw an acceptance posted for PhD in EALC at Stanford this morning. If that goes to someone who posts/lurks in this thread, congratulations! Also, saw OSU and UT Austin MA acceptances posted. More congrats As much as I hate the waiting, I'm still pretty excited to see people getting into places they applied. Best of luck to us while we anxiously wait...
  14. I'm reading the Hunger Games trilogy, watching Boardwalk Empire, working, trying some new recipes, taking a well-needed break from anything related to my field, checking the status of my submitted apps too often, and enjoying time with my wife and 16-month-old son. I hate the wait, and vacillate between certainty that I will accepted and absolute incredulity that I think I have a shot anywhere. Painful stuff.
  15. Thanks for posting this. I was a little concerned about my "incomplete" status as well, even though I had sent in all supporting materials. Glad to know it appears to be universal.
  16. Hey spottedzebra I don't mind at all -- here's a little bit about my apps and such: I am applying to 9 programs altogether (7 MA, all [East] Asian Studies, 2 PhD): the PhD programs are at U of Chicago (East Asian Languages and Civilizations) where I would ideally pursue a double PhD w/ Cinema & Media Studies, and University of Michigan (Asian Languages and Cultures). At U Mich, I talked to them about bumping me down to the Center for Chinese Studies Master in Asian Studies: China consideration if they thought I was not qualified enough for the PhD program (which I probably won't be!), and they said they commonly do just that. So, I figure I might as well apply to their PhD program MA programs: Duke, Yale, Harvard, Stanford, Berkeley, Indiana U- Bloomington, U Illinois- Urbana I know that I am applying to many schools, but I see this as an investment for my future, and I can't stand the idea of applying again next year! Haha... The three I am really interested in / excited about are Berkeley, Duke, and UChicago. Yale's program threatens to be 1-year, and I <really> don't look forward to going through this process again next year if I end up going there (to apply for PhD programs).... My focus is contemporary China (with interests in identity / sub and countercultures relation to music, media, film and literature), and I would like to do my PhD in EAS also, but I am leaving the option open of pursuing a different PhD with China as the specialization, since part of the process of going through an MA program could involve the shifting of interests or focus. Steelkokoro, grats on getting all of your apps finished, that must feel awesome! I am 1/3rd done, but the remaining 6 are simply a matter of editing SoPs and filling out a little more info on the apps. I had to take a couple days break from the whole process, as it is way more demanding and exhausting than I thought it would be. Also, good to hear that I wasn't alone in not seeing GRE / transcripts received reflected in the online app (aside from Berkeley, which updated theirs quickly!). Too bad there aren't more people in this thread, but it is nice to meet some fellow apps and possible future classmates/cohorts!
  17. Hey all, Been lurking for a while now, and wanted to add to this thread. Applying to MA East Asian Studies programs, and a couple PhD programs. Yeah, Steelkokoro, I submitted my apps for Berkeley and Stanford, and of course am feeling totally nervous about them now. I think the worst part of this whole process is the excitement and optimism I felt during the 2-3 months of working on the application process now being replaced by self-doubt and general feelings of inadequacy. And of course, I still have a few apps left to submit (all done with everything they need, just looking over and double-checking, etc., before I fully submit). Also beginning to regret only contacting professors at 3 of my potential schools beforehand (and at this point in the app process, I feel like it may be too late to contact ones at the schools I have left). Bleh, anyway...back to the stress Oh, Steelkokoro: after you submitted your Stanford app, does the info page still read as incomplete for your app? I sent my GRE scores and transcripts a couple weeks ago, and submitted my app on the 9th, so I assume they just haven't matched up my scores and transcripts with my app yet, but it makes me a little nervous. Good luck all!
