  1. Congrats on the new plan, it sounds like a really positive alternative.

There's been so much chatter lately across my social networks about where academic career paths are headed (because of the Toronto TA strike). It's not surprising; grad students and adjuncts and even my letter writers have initiated really frank conversations about how damn hard this life will be.

There will always be other options for those who seek them, though. It's just a matter of figuring out which aspects of academia you're most passionate about and finding - or making - an opportunity that suits. Most of us are probably gunning for TT positions, but it helps (I think) to go into this with a long list of backup possibilities. Then again, I did articulate this on one application that ended up rejecting me. So maybe I'm way off :)

    Elle,

I totally agree. I think we all will get where we want eventually. As for me, I had to remember if teaching is really what I want to do it shouldn't matter if I do not have the prestige of a phd right now. I should be focusing on where change can happen-- with our youth.

Good luck to you and everyone reading this forum (in secret or not) and feeling down. It's not the end of the world--just reevaluate.

  2. I've applied to a program to obtain my teachers certificate. Thankfully the deadline had been extended. Must have been fate.

I am seriously re evaluating if obtaining a phd in history is what I want. This is my second time applying and I have to remin myself I'm still quite young. All in all, I am glad I wasn't offered admission. I need to do some soul searching because I think I got too caught up in wanting an acceptance. I know people in history phd programs who are unhappy or who have the exact same job outlooks I have with a Masters.

Not to be a Debbie downer to the rest of you guys. But I have realized quite a few things during this process. I will be going on with my life and figuring out what I want and don't.

Best of luck to you all.

  3. So, I know I've been Mr. Mopey around here.  Tonight I got rejected by Minnesota, but...... I just was accepted to COLORADO! I'm so happy. I did a dance and everything.

:D :D well would you look at that ! That's awesome so excited for you!

  4. Sorry Emory applicants. I was told all acceptances went out. They were only able to offer 2 American spots this year. The admissions committee met last week sometime.

I was told they were very impressed with my application.

I am not sad although this is my second time applying.

  5. I applied last year and got rejected by 6 (yes SIX) programs. I was heartbroken. My best advice is not to wallow in your grief. Look at it as an opportunity to better your app and decide if this is what you really want to do. I took those months to redo my entire app. It's much better. I haven't recieved any news either way but I have learned a lot of valuable lessons.

If all else fails I think I will go into the public school system and reapply.

Try to stay positive and that's the best advice I can offer you, others and myself as well. :)

  6. I think that there's a little more than a snowball's chance that Emory notifies tomorrow. Any other opinions/predictions?

Last year they didn't notify me until Presidnts day. I probably already got rejected because I didn't get an interview. But thank goodness I didn't pay anything for that app :D. Did you interview ?

  7. Hi ! I'm no expert and I have never read this book (ok this is starting off bad, lol) but I vaguely remember one of my POIs at Emory writing something on memory. Clifton Crais. Entitled "History Lessons" but his other work is primarily on South Africa so not sure of the connection but I hope this helps you.

    Cheers!

  8. Ugh two of my schools might get my MA transcript after the deadline. I sent them each a copy of the unofficial one just in case, but now I'm stressing out when a few days ago I thought I was done!

How're the rest of you holding up?

Leaving my phone in my car while at work to keep from obsessively checking emails. Even though I know it's not results time. No self control!! Lol. That sucks about your transcripts. Nothing like it to rattle your nerves lol

  9. I think you would have until April 15 as far as financial aid, to respond to schools. I'm no expert so I hope someone else here knows. Also I think some of us should start hearing back towards the end of Jan. According to my hypothesis after stalking the results forum lol and experience from last round. Hope this helped.

  10. I agree with the illustration above.

Personally, although I am working a full time job in the banking industry I haven't given up on pursing my PhD.

But hey guys, we are all dedicated historians. Surely we will be rewarded. :-D

    ...right?! Lol

  11. Hello guys, what does it mean if a program extends their application deadline?

I have already submitted mine but noticed a school extended their deadline from Dec. 15 until Jan. 1st. Does this have a general meaning? Also, would it delay the response time (I noticed most of their decisions usually come out in Feb).

    Thanks in advance!

  12. Three different people in towns near schools I applied to found my academia.edu page this week. Hm.

Wow. That's Good! What were the application deadlines? I've always wondered if they review before the deadline. I have turned mine in about a month earlier than the stated deadline.

  13. When I didn't get in, I took Feb-October to seriously work on my research. I worked a full time no but also started to learn a language (which pertains to my research), consulted with recommendation letter writers. But the main thing is to seriously take the time to reasses, regroup and if need be rewrite you sop (and writing sample if applicable). What im saying is Don't waste the year! That way when you reapply in your sop you can tell the committee just what you have been doing improve your app since graduating. Best of all, you will be honestly speaking.

Most of all take the summer to have fun and be certain that graduate school is what you really want to do.

    Hope this helps!

  14. As you enter in the university politics, you will find that nobody has a "clear" definition of diversity.... but in generally it does mean representing a minority group whether it's gender, ability, race, ethnicity, socioeconomics, sexual orientation, etc. My university's definition of "diversity" for its diversity fellowship tend to favor applicants of racial/ethnic minority group.

Thanks so much for that answer. I am a minority which is why I asked.

Members of this board are very helpful and I just wanted to say thanks !

  15. things to flag for readers such as diversity or a super desired field for that year.

    .

Hello, thanks so much for that timeline :) I'm sure ill refer back during the waiting period.

Would you mind explaining to me what is meant by "diversity" in the above quoted text? Is this in terms of the persons work/ research or personal background (such as being a minority). Is this a favorable trait to have?

Sorry, just curious. Also, thanks a bunch for your help!

  16. I'm born and raised in Jackson and received my masters s from Jackson state i went to usm undergrad (great great school) There are many different races besides blacks at jsu. Especially asians... i have seen a few whites. There are also other colleges within the surrounding areas like belhaven, ms college and milsaps but jsu is pretty big. I am not sure if you needed to know anything else. Umm I currently live on the outskirts of Jackson in brandon ms they have a lot of surrounding towns.

You can pm me for other I info or put it here :)

  17. Wait, you mean my paper-writer and research-organizer and gradcafe-stalker machine also plays moving pictures?!

I may or may not have watched several hours of New Girl last night

Haha. Hilarious ! I am a sucked for American horror story it's really good!

I just submitted all my apps. It felt good and not like the terror I felt during last year's submission. Now the real game begins ...the wait lol
