  1. i got rejected from my 3rd-choice school (out of 3). It hit me harder than I expected, mostly I think because (1) I had hoped it would be easiest to get into, and (2) based upon past years' results reported I knew it would likely be the first I'd receive word from. I'd hoped that having one acceptance in the bag would make the rest of the season go better (especially since I have previously been rejected from my top choice).

I'm going through a similar situation. I recently got rejected from my last place school which isn't even ranked. Thought it would be easy. It really makes you feel though you won't get into anywhere :(

So I can relate. But try to stay positive :) and keep the faith

Hope this helps you in some way.

  2. I had heard around 10 from the DGS there...she had also implied they were really looking for Latin Americanists due to last years yield (made many Latin american offers and not many took them). She encouraged me to contact my POI to make sure that she was taking on a student before applying.

Wow. This news is so depressing lol. Ill probably just pace a hole in my floor now lol :(

  3. A bit of news for UNC Chapel Hill people - I heard through a friend on the faculty there that they are planning to make offers in the next couple of weeks, and that they had dramatically reduced the number of students they're accepting because of budget cuts. Wish it were better news...

Yikes ! I wonder if that is "dramatically reduced" from the 12-15 figure I was quoted.

This is not good news :(

  4. What do you mean an individual professor doing their thing?

The professor is independently conducting the interview ... I supposed. Am I correct on this meaning New England ?

  5. I wouldn't count on it being a fake post. The fakes are usually acceptances not interviews. Very good likelihood that this is an individual professor doing his or her thing. I'm not an Africanist but I have a number of friends who are, given the size of the field, it can be very personal.

Thanks for your response ! Guess I will just have to be more patient and let things play out :)

  6. It's one if my t

It's one of my top choices too. Did you get an interview?

No someone posted it on the survey that they got an interview from emory African history. From my research I think it's only one professor in that field. Not too sure, so maybe it is independent by the professor ?! Not sure. No I am freaking out because I haven't been contacted :(. This is a little early. Hope it's a fake post lolll haha(that was mean of me) lol

  7. I actually had the chance to go in october! There was a diversity recruitment program that I was invited to. About 100 or so people were there, but only five in history. I met with Hasan Jeffries and he seemed mutually interested in working with me, but I can only hope the rest of the committee approves (that, and I didn't have outstanding GRE scores). I sat in on his undergrad class and a grad class taught by someone else. In total, I met about 8 or so faculty members. I hope things work out for the best. And I'm sure I'll be refreshing my app status a million times a day next week seeing how they began notifying people on the 24th last year.

Oh, and that's cool, glamdoll. Where are you applying to? And what types of programs

Hi! I applied to places like UNC and Emory. Those especially strong in southern history. I am dying during this waiting process lol.

I hope everyone is having a more pleasant wait than me ! :)

  8. Cool cool. Hopefully at least a few of us will be there. I'm hoping to work with Hasan Jeffries and Stephanie Smith. Oh, and Curtis Austin and Judson Jeffries in aaas.

I worked with Dr. Austin in undergrad. He is an excellent professor! I didn't know until recently that he was at OSU now or I would've applied :( good luck to you guys !

  9. Just got an email from my POI at Harvard requesting an informal skype interview. If I don't post back here again it's because I had an anxiety attack over the next couple of days and actually died.

This made me chuckle. Good luck to you! Lol

  10. Fitting faculty interests tends to be a strong factor in most departments' decision-making, at least from the tens of thousands of posts I've read on the subject. Also I have no idea, but having a 75-page writing sample might make you seem credible regardless of its merit otherwise (not that they'll read even 25 pages of it).

I noticed you're from Jackson? I'm from Texas and my sister just moved to Jackson this year.

    Greetings,

Thanks for your response ! Also nice to meet you and know that you are a fellow southern like me! Maybe we can help each other out during this waiting process lol. I do thank you for your kindess. I'm really nervous :)

  11. Good luck! If anything, keep yourself entertained. The waiting is terrible. I was on holidays through feb 20th, more or less, so it was a loooooooong wait. Where did you apply? (if you don't want to say, it's OK :) )

Sorry I forgot to quote you. Thanks for asking. I'm nervous because most of those schools pick a very small number. Do you know if having the exact same research as a poi will increase your chances ?

  12. Emory, unc chapel hill, unc greensboro, duke, uva, and uga. My focus is southern and African American history. My top choice is emory due to a poi there. I am hoping my writing sample helps. I submitted all 75 pages even though I wasn't supposed to lol

  13. New to the board. I was reading fall 2012 and was intrigued. I too have submitted all of my applications and am anxious. Looking forward to the wait process with you guys :) I am hoping I get at least 1 of the 6 schools I applied for.
