@athan892 In a typical month of 2017, my paycheck at UW CSE was like this: Graduate Student 50% Appointment: $ 2,749.00 Federal Income Tax withheld: $ 344.76 UAW Local 4121 union due $ 32.72 Workers' compensation insurance $ 8.78 Net income $ 2,362.74 Hope it helps! A few things to keep in mind: Your base pay will differ depending on your academic department. See this page for a complete list. Your pay is subject to federal income tax (~12.5% effective rate for 30k) but exempt from Medicare and Social Security taxes. The state of Washington is one of 9 states that do not levy any income tax. In its stead, you will be subject to a fairly high sales tax (10.2%) and annual vehicle registration tax ($120 + 1.1% of valuation). UW is one of the few institutions where graduate students are unionized. Thus, you will be required to pay a union membership due (1.44% of pay). See UAW Local 4121. UW will pay 100% of health insurance premium on your behalf. The insurance also includes dental and vision benefits. You may also enroll dependents for a fee. You will be still be responsible for miscellaneous fees, including fees for athletic facilities and monthly bus pass (U-pass). This should run about 300 dollars each quarter.
  2. I applied to 7 places, out of which 3 made me offers. Considering how many applications UW received this year, I'm really lucky to get the offer. BTW, if I were to start over all over again, I'd spend more time on my statement of purpose. I felt embarrassed when professors I met during visits recalled minute details from my statement xP I asked several people about this at my visit at UW. Basically, your advisor can come up with additional funding to support you over the summer if you're doing research for him/her. The reason for not including summer support in the package is that some people choose to do industry internship instead.
  3. As I looked through the feedback, I saw that they are really huge on impact. They'd like to see how my research would benefit the society at large, and I could have been much more clear about that.
  4. I'm looking at Stevens court, as apartment hunting from the other side of the country would be difficult. I've made my housing deposit and will do apartment selection this Thursday.
  5. VG/F, G/G, VG/F. Not awarded. Surprisingly positive feedback, considering that the application was a little bit rushed. I'll try again next year as a graduate student
  6. I've already committed myself to attending a Ph.D. under research assistantship (RA). In an unlikely case where I do receive NSF, does that replace my RA funding?
  7. I just confirmed my decision to attend UW. I'll be joining the CSE department. So excited! And yes, funding information was included in the initial offer of admission.
  8. I got a rejection email 2 days ago from the ML department.
  9. Maybe departments set their own different deadlines?
  10. I submitted my application on December 14, one day before the deadline.
  11. I got my decision on January 27 for Computer Science and Engineering (CSE).
  12. The schedule for my solo visit is set! I'll be in town between March 12 and March 14.
  13. Finally got a rejection e-mail today. I wasn't holding my breath on this, but... Oh well.
  14. At this point, I'd be happy to get any e-mail, be it acceptance or rejection, and move on. The wait is so nerve-wracking ;(
  15. I'd be happy to! Once the schedule is set, I'll let you know. (The prospective student committee is arranging for me meetings with faculty members and graduate students, so I don't know the exact schedule yet.)
