  1. Does anyone know if Northwestern DGP has sent out all their invites?

Which campus will you be at? If you will be at north campus you may want to check out the northwood apartments. There is a Kroger easily in walking distance, as well as a handful of other places to eat and random stores. It may be a little difficult to walk to other campuses from these apartments. However, north campus and all other campuses are connected by blue bus (totally free without a bus pass), and these buses come very frequently (every 5 minutes during the semesters I think), even in summer it is still quick, but a little bit slower. See this google maps link for an approximate area of the store and the apartments in question (south of said kroger). https://maps.google.com/maps?q=ann+arbor&hl=en&ll=42.303373,-83.705864&spn=0.015045,0.030556&sll=42.748946,-84.47619&sspn=0.239004,0.488892&hnear=Ann+Arbor,+Washtenaw,+Michigan&t=h&z=15 I don't know how much those apartments would cost with a roommate, but I have a friend who had a pretty positive experience living there.
  3. I know that northwestern DGP likes to send stuff in as they get it done, not in one wave, according to the results section. But most midwestern universities have been closed yesterday, and many are also closed today (NW included) due to the cold/snow/ice.
  4. It's for sure true, because they don't have to pay as much for you.
  5. Has anyone heard from UPenn CAMB cancer biology yet? I know I've seen some UPenn stuff, but I'm pretty sure each subsection has its own admissions committee.
  6. I hope I can get mine soon. I've decided to take the rejections in humility, so I am printing the emails out and posting them on my fridge.
  7. The midwestern university I am at is also closed tomorrow. I have a feeling that most are, because 4 of the "major" universities in my state are closed, and we were not even hit very hard by the snow and cold.
  8. I think that the scholarship will only really help you get accepted because the department won't have to cover your tuition, but after that it probably won't impact your life in one way or another. It is expected that nearly all biology Ph.D. programs will cover your tuition in full and give you a stipend, and this stipend would be about the same as the scholarship. So pretty much whether or not you actually utilize the scholarship, you will still get paid about the same.
  9. Best: Sloan Kettering replied to me next day every time I emailed them, so I think they're pretty great. Worst: I had no need to contact anyone else, so I guess I can't really say much here.
  10. I know immunology has sent their stuff out. I applied to cell/developmental and have not heard anything yet.
  11. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7uUlOAyQsn4 Time to break out this video, it may help some others as well.
  12. And now that it is the new year, time to get some rejections.
  13. UChicago giving me a heart attack. I get this email: Hello, An update has been posted to your online account for your application to the University of Chicago Division of Biological Sciences. Please log back into your online account to view this update. Best, Sarah So I try to open my application on my phone (which took a very long time, since I was in the middle of nowhere with poor internet). About 20 minutes into loading all of the pages (almost done!) I get another email: Reynolds, Sarah [bSD] - GRA would like to recall the message, "Update to your UChicago application".
  14. The more I read these forums the more I think Pinkster is just an expert troll putting on a world class acting job. When you take a step back and look at it, it all kind of makes sense.
  15. On the search function people were reporting interviews from the last admissions cycle, but not the ones before it. So I'm guessing they may have just started doing it recently.
  16. If you do not have a solid background in calc/physics before you get to quantum chemistry/thermodynamics, you will need a lot more lubrication than your classmates, let's put it that way.
  17. Someone reported a Weill neuroscience invitation. Now I'll be on edge all day, even though I applied to Cell/Developmental.
  18. I'm a male. I think most of the time I will probably just wear a nice light colored dress shirt and some dress pants with black shoes and belt. Not sure if I want to wear my jacket or not, I never really feel comfortable in it.
  19. I wonder if we will see many invites tomorrow as well. Most of the professors I know are planning on coming on Mon/Tues, then taking Christmas-New Year off. And the next two days are business as usual for the office staff here, too.
  20. I guess I'll take a go at it. Undergrad Institution: Big State Major(s): Chemistry Minor(s): Biochemistry GPA in Major: 3.1 Overall GPA: 3.0 (Last two years ~3.5 average) Position in Class: Probably not that great Type of Student: Domestic Male GRE Scores (revised/old version): Q: 160 (78%) V: 154 (64%) W: 5.0 (93%) B: N/A Research Experience: Two summers in a lab not at my institution, one manuscript submitted to the top journal in the field (not including Nature/Science/Cell). Three years in a lab at my institution, one first author manuscript written, awaiting submission to a mid-range journal in the field. The lab I was in for three years is in the field I am applying to. In total, 2 oral presentations and 2 poster presentations. Applying directly out of undergrad. Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Two research fellowships within institution and deans list for a semester. Award for one of my poster presentations. Special Bonus Points: Took two grad classes, other than that nothing that special. All three of my letters should be great, for what it's worth. By far the strongest point of my application. Applying to Where: In all cases applying to the "Cell and Molecular Biology equivalent" department, and "cancer biology equivalent" where applicable. Current Institution Duke Harvard Sloan-Kettering Weill Cornell UPenn Northwestern University of Chicago UC Boulder UCSF My numbers are pretty weak but my letter writers convinced me that it is worth a shot to apply to these places. I already have an interview at my current institution and I would be more than happy to stay here, and you miss 100% of the shots you don't take I guess. So I kind of just applied to the places that I would really want to go, without worrying too much about my odds of getting in.
  21. Did the Sloan-Kettering email look like a "mass email". Or is someone sending them out individually to each person.
