Neeko, I live in Belmont Heights and commute to Irvine 5 days a week. I work adjacent to the UCI campus, so our commutes would be remarkably similar. It's awful! Without traffic (Sunday 11am ) the commute is as little as 24minutes, though usually about 28. With traffic it's much worse. To arrive on campus by 8:50, you'd have to leave at 7:50. If traffic gets bad, you might be late. I'd say 90min of traffic is about two standard deviations away from typical, so it'll happen to you a few times too. Traffic to Campus in the mid afternoon won't be bad, but the 405 will be completely jammed when you leave after a 3pm class. The traffic can linger too, I've sat in a sea of red lights several times when leaving at 7pm. There is a bus, but it's not too convenient and you'd have to bike the last few bikes. However, the benefit of not living in creepy Irvine is worth it. Long beach has character, is walkable, has great independent restaurants and coffee shops, interesting people...
  2. I still haven't heard form UC Davis or Northeastern. Seems I'll be waiting until after commitments are made this week.
  3. Yesterday I received and email from a POI asking to talk about my application. When I told him I'd already been rejected by the school, he didn't seem phased at all. He's going to ask to have the rejection reversed. While this is probably not be first, it's gotta be pretty rare right? T
  4. It's late march and I've received one rejection and no acceptances from the four schools I've applied to. The others have been completely silent. One or two results from the schools have popped up on the results page (both rejections and acceptances), but I’ve heard nothing. Can anyone chime in on what the silence means? One users suggested it means I’ve been rejected for a PhD (seems likely) but possibly will be accepted for a Masters. Anyone have experience or insight on this. Although I won’t be crestfallen if rejected, the wait is maddening.
  5. The silence is killing me. After finally hearing form one school (rejection), the remaining three to which I applied are all still silent. Results for my remaining schools have started to pop up in the results search but I've heard nothing. The silence has gotten mean a wait-list at best right?
  6. Complexbongo, Excellent find! Thanks for the input. I'll take heart for my admittance prospects and keep my head down once accepted. Good luck in your search. T
  7. Hi, I am applying to graduate school after an extended period working in the computer industry. I have pretty good GREs( 168Q,163V,4.0A), 13 years relevant work experience but a low undergrad GPA 3.1 (athletics and women were my real major). I'd like to teach at the university level and thus will be pursuing a PhD. It seems the university you do your graduate work at greatly effects your chances of getting that first prof. gig. My question is, do I have to attend a top tier university (ranked top 15 US news) in order to succeed? It seems likely I'd be excluded from these programs based on my GPA. Honesty, I'm not sure I'll be admitted to a top 30 school either. If I attend a program outside the top 50, is the paper even going to be allow me to pursue my goal? On a related note, I'd be really nice to find a repository of GPA/GRE distributions for those admitted to grad programs, not just averages. It'd really help some of us make informed decisions about where to apply. Thanks in advance, Terry
