  1. Any other waitlisted folk hear any news? My top choice MA program wants to hear from me by the middle of this month, but I suspect I won't hear back from all my schools until the veeery last minute...

Are MA programs allowed to pressure you to answer before April 15? Doesn't seem fair

  2. Yea it

This also may mean students who have been awarded outside funding (like the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship which provides recipients full tuition and stipend for 3 years of grad school, the Ford Fellowship and others). I had a school call me to ask if I'd heard back from the NSF fellowship about my application yet (which I have not). So schools who know they can't fund everyone may be looking for students who have won one of these external fellowships.

Unfortunately a lot of those fellowships (like the EPA STAR fellowship and the Javits fellowship) have been discontinued in the last year or two, and I don't think most schools realize this. Some of my apps had a box to check if you had applied to the Javits Fellowship and I just wanted to write "That'd be impossible!" but I refrained...

Anyways, sorry about that rant, but what I meant to say was I don't think students being awarded outside funding would change the dynamics of the cohort much, but it is an interesting way that they're going about working this out. I've heard of other schools who navigate this by offering all accepted students funding and then encouraging or requiring everyone to apply to outside funding during their first year.

It is rough that the NSF announces so late in this process as, if one were to win, it would probably make a big difference in the admissions process. I'm waiting to hear about that as well and while I doubt I'll get it......it would be nice, right? haha

  3. I'm declining the wait list from CUNY, but I still haven't decided between USCD and Michigan.

    I'm considering several things:

    • Fit
    • Funding offer and the support the university gives students to get outside funding/ how often students get outside funding.
    • Cost of living
    • Weather (I know it might seem silly, but if I'm going to commit to living in once place for 5-8 years then I need to know if I'll feel comfortable there).
    • What the support of the faculty's like.
    • How TAing/RAing works.
    • Placement after graduation.
    • Retention.
    • Experiences of current grad students.

It's a lot but then again grad school is a big deal, our futures are a big deal.

This is a great list to use in decision making!

  4. Where are you in your decision process Daykid? That looks to be a tough one!

Gah! I don't even knoooooooooow. I've already declined the offer from Illinois. The funding just wasn't good enough to stand up to the other programs I've been accepted to.

I visited Texas two weeks ago and had a good time but didn't get that overwhelming "this is it" feeling I was hoping for. Combined with the fact that one of the profs I hoped to work with seems to be leaving and the fact that I'd get great funding the first year but not so great funding the following years, it's dropped a bit on my list. That said, I loved the people I'd be working with and the grad students were great to me. I could certainly see myself being happy there. It's also just really far.

I'm visiting Brown this week and Michigan in two weeks. I'm hoping to get this feeling of "YES! This is IT!" at one of those visits. But, I'm dying to hear from UPenn. Not only is it a great program with some amaaaazing faculty (Asif Agha is a Titan of ling anth) but it's close to home. After living abroad for 4 years, being near home is a huge plus.

So, I have no idea what I'm going to do.

  5. Forsaken, it sounds to me like a 9 month program is probably better if the ultimate goal is a PhD. It gets you through quicker and working with the faculty you hoped to work with. Of course finances are a huge factor but I think Chicago sounds like the way to go!

Dig Deep - congrats on being done and good luck in Boston!

Cultural Anth - I get being torn about being in a place you love. However, if the ultimate goal is the PhD, I think doing a terminal masters is just going to slow you down.

Canis - It's great that you have such a wonderful option already!

  6. I know that a lot of people are still waiting on news from schools. I myself am still waiting on the last school to be able to start making some decisions. However, I wanted to get the ball rolling on this thread so that we can all start to work out where we will be ending up next year. If you already know, share with us and let us help you revel in being done with this whole exhausting process. If you are still deciding, let us in on your decision making process! If you are regrouping for next year, let us know what you are thinking!

    Decision time is nearing people!

  7. Yea, I don't think anyone is saying throw fit out the window.  Notice that the original post says Great fit w/ no-funding vs good fit with full funding. That is the key. No fit and all the money in the world isn't gonna make a whole lot of sense.

  8. Anthrogeek, you are a bully. I don't know why you feel the need to take cheap shots at people you don't know anything about to try and make a point. You know nothing about me, my research or my self confidence. None of which is relevant to this conversation.

I wouldn't got to grad school without some type of funding offer. That is my decision and my opinion.

  9. This is something I've been thinking about too. What I'm leaning toward though is that, the best fit in the world is not going to make the next 10 years livable if you are worried about making ends meet while trying to study and write. And having to take a second job is certainly going to take away from your studies. Personally, I'm married and have to think about how to best make ends meet for the both of us and a better funding offer will let me do that.

That said, I wouldn't choose a school with NO fit just because they offered me a lot of money. Though, I can't imagine they would if I didn't fit with the program.

  10. denied admission to the PhD program at Chicago, but offered the MA in Latin American Studies at half tuition.  Im excited now!!

It will be a battle between Georgetown and Chicago, but I really want to work with a prof. at Chicago, so that will probably tilt the scale, especially if I get no FA from Georgetown.

    Yay forsaken!!!!!

  11. My University of Toronto status changed online today to "Decision Made" - but I haven't received anything in the mail and the online doesn't tell you. For those who applied - I noticed some folks were getting rejections by mail (which might take a while) - have any of you heard about waitlisting?

At this point, if the decision is made. Call. No reason to draw it out one way or the other.
