  1. so i have my net id and password... but i can't figure out how to sign on to the housing page. did you sign in on the home page of NYU's site and then just go to the housing page? where did you sign in?
  2. re ranking: the us news and world report does not make all of their ranking lists available for free to the public. you can buy the book of the recent rankings or become a member on their website to gain Internet access their rankings. otherwise, there is a way that you can plug in criteria important to you in order to rank programs based on that criteria here: http://graduate-school.phds.org/rankings/anthropology i also found this: http://www.stat.tamu.edu/~jnewton/nrc_rankings/area35.html (nrc stands for National Research Council)
  3. did they how they would send out their other notifications?
  4. hey, have you received your decision from NYU yet?
  5. you could definitely work your way into some good anthro programs with a grades that push your GPA up over the next couple of years. definitely. even if you can't pull it up really high, there are students in this forum and beyond who earn admissions in to good programs (not just anthro programs) because despite their GPA they are able to demonstrate their fit and intellectual abilities through their statement of purpose and writing sample. developing relationships with professors in ways that help them get to you know you beyond being "just another student" in one of their many classes would also be a good step. you'll want to have at least three professors who can write holistic letters about your intellectual and academic potential and abilities. also, and this is especially true if you will try to apply to grad school in your senior year of college, you'll want to start developing your academic focus on a topic and region as soon as you are able to find something that you feel passionate about. note: you won't have to forever feel passionate about the topic and/or region but you will have something to write about in your statement of purpose that won't necessarily look like it comes out of nowhere. by the time you enter a grad program, you can change your focus depending on the resources in your new program but in order to gain admittance focus is the best way to go and working to demonstrate that now would be a good thing for you to do. your writing sample should compliment your statement of purpose (SOP). some students gain admissions without having complimentary SOP's and writing samples but you have time to develop a writing sample that you can foresee as complimentary because you are thinking about the process so early. GOOD LUCK!
  6. i know that one person has said they were offered an "enhanced chancellor's fellowship" (i don't want to say who so that they can self-identify if they want). i was not offered funding but thrown into the competition for a university-wide fellowship. babelhead, did your letter say that they put you up for the competition? also, it seemed that there might be lost of teaching opportunities that might help with tuition and a stipend... as well as research assistantships. i was reading their financial aid page and i'm not sure but it seems like TA and GAships are not limited to those who are awarded funding packages, so that could totally be an option!
  7. i'm having a hard time not taking the typos in my acceptance letter and in the email i was sent by an ad comm member personally. i feel wounded about not being offered funding right off the bat and the typos are salt in the wound. yeah, yeah. at least i'm accepted but i won't be takin gup the offer without funding. ugh! i was hoping an acceptance would lessen my stress!
  8. i did speak with a prof. and i thought of this forum towards the end of the conversation and remembered to try to get a little more info than my admissions fate. i did not ask them if they have extended all offers yet (i didn't think of to ask that! sorry!) but did find out that they will extend/have extended about 30 offers and expect 15 folks to take up those offers. about half of that 15 will be awarded departmental funding and a few of the rest will be thrown into the competition for a university-wide fellowship. good luck! i hope you hear from them soon!
  9. Have they secured funding for you/do you have outside funding? They said they had seven or so fellowships and the rest have to have outside funding/receive funding from a university wide fellowship.
  10. they are really taking their time, hey? next week is their spring break... maybe we'll hear after that? maybe they will take hard looks at the apps during the spring break and make decisions then, too... i can only hope!
  11. Is anyone else considering CUNY as their first choice program? I was accepted today and couldn't be happier. Apparently they are accepting 30 people and expect 15 to enroll! I am hoping to be one of those people enrolling but funding is still to be determined for me. So yeah, is anyone else expecting to take up the CUNY offer?
  12. i'm sorry to hear that! i hope you've heard good news from other programs. on the rutgers decision- were you prompted to go to the website to check your status? and is the website that you checked the https://admissionservices.rutgers.edu/graduate/programStatus? i've been checking that often and it never changes! thanks ahead of time and good luck if you're still waiting on other notifications!
  13. don't give up just yet on CUNY. i got an email the other night asking when i might be available to talk on the phone about my application. and am hoping to talk with an ad comm member sometime today! i don't know for sure that they will be telling me that i've been accepted but the wording of the email belies that i just might... i'm hoping they wouldn't get my hopes up over a call that actually informs me that i'm waitlisted. ugh. i say that to say it seems that the contact info for accepted students was distributed among multiple faculty who have gotten around to contacting folks when they get around to it? the last few days have shown me that it ain't over until you actually have a rejection letter in front of your face. good luck!
  14. congrats to you both!!
  15. i haven't heard anything but i did see that post on the results page. who knows if it's real and who knows if it's just the first of many notifications (good and bad).
  16. hmmmm.... i think that a second SOP might be out of the question but a very good thank you letter (for letting you know that you're on the waitlist) might be fine. i use a thank you letter after job interviews not only to thank the interviewer but also to stress again how great a candidate i am for the position i've interviewed for because of fit/experience. you could use your thank you letter to do the same thing... that is, if you know who is on the ad comm and were interviewed by them/had some prior contact. i don't think such a thank you letter to the grad secretary would be helpful... maybe you could send it to the dgs though... they might actually be on the ad comm/pass it along to the ad comm for consideration. good luck!
  17. where do i start? i guess from the first time i got to the department's website i felt like i finally felt validated (research-wise and politically). i had looked at NSSR (great school but you can't apply directly to their phd programs and the funding is worrisome), Columbia and NYU and was really disappointed to find not many people were working on some of the stuff that i find important and thought that maybe i was way off in terms of what's relevant and current in anthro today. then i looked at the CUNY Anthro page and it was perfect for me. I mean, Fernando Coronil, Michael Blim and Marc Edelman are all looking at something that i'm interested in. furthermore, my exchange with Prof. Blim was just really helpful and engaging, and i just felt so welcome by him and when i went to one of his office hours, i felt that the department's space is a really awesome resource and common area to be in for the current grad students. that grad students seemed really friendly with each other, which i think is important. many of the prof offices are in the same space and apart of that space are computer areas, couches, etc. it seemed really cozy. i could actually see myself using the space as a way to immerse myself in the department as well as keep focused on whatever projects i was working on. it was just really cool. did you apply for cultural anthro? why'd you choose to apply to CUNY?
  18. although i was interviewed by rutgers, i have not gotten an acceptance or waitlist email. i'm wondering about numbers, too. i bet penny burness would be forthcoming with a waitlist caller! (hint, hint) it would make sense for them to want to know at this stage where they on the waitlist... how many students are being offered acceptances.
  19. awesome. thanks.
  20. to either of the waitlisted persons: do you know if accepted students have been contacted already? do you know how long the waiting list is? has your status changed on the application/admissions website?
  21. well, i don't know with all certainty ( i am only an applicant to rutgers myself and i haven't called because i don't want to be pushy) BUT the anthro dept. at rutgers interviewed applicants over the first few days of february. when my interview was ending, i asked when they expect to get back to students with decisions and they said they hoped to make them by the end of february. note that i didn't say they said they'd get back to students by the end of february. i know when i hung up the phone and for the proceeding couple of weeks i was certain they'd be getting back to people around the end of last month... but when they didn't, i thought more about what they said and they didn't say they would be getting back then. they said they only that they HOPED to be making admissions decisions by then. in terms of interviews with rutgers, this seems to be the first year that they've conducted admissions interviews for the anthro department and i really don't even know if the interviewees are definitely the only candidates still being considered for admissions. i mean, i would assume so but who knows!? as for duke, i didn't apply but followed a conversation in another thread in this forum. it seems that the program has contacted all the students accepted in the first round... and other applicants who haven't been contacted with acceptance have resigned to probably being rejected.
  22. I fell in love with this department and originally thought it'd be the only program i'd apply to this cycle. fortunately, i got real and applied to two other programs/schools but i'm still most anxious to hear (positive news) from CUNY. i feel like i've tried to divert my focus away from this school because (judging from past result reporting on the results page) they notify so late in march that i want to get excited about this program again! SO: anyone hear anything from them yet? or just want to talk about how awesome the department is??
  23. rutgers' CITE program self-describes as strong in feminist theory.
  24. well i hope NYU American Studies will be notifying everyone soon! it's lame that they've made decisions but haven't let anyone know. of course, i'm also really scared to know because it sounds like it's highly likely that it will be a rejection with acceptance rates like 2%. ugh.
  25. there are other threads in the forum discussing MAPSS (and Chicago's humanities program, too). most people who chime in haven't actually been through the program and classify it as a "cash cow" program that they expect is ultimately useless. fortunately, there have been graduates of the programs who have experienced otherwise and found the program to be a useful tool for constructing a more focused background and future. graduates have said that a more focused and solid background allows them better success for applying to PhD programs at the U of Chicago as well as other at other schools. if my tuition were paid for, i would take the MAPSS opportunity in a heartbeat (especially if i had no other academic options). i mean, you'll have to pay for your living expenses at this point no matter what you do. you might as well get a U of Chicago education while you're at it! good luck and congrats on earning a full tuition waiver for the program! not many students do that. oh, and check out those other threads that discuss the interdisciplinary programs at U of Chicago.
