Amazing! Congrats incognito!
-
Yes Princess ... seems that way. Not sure if that is a good or bad thing! Has anyone else interviewed at NYU or have friends in the program? I would love to hear more about it from someone who has been through it ...
-
lavendercloud -- ate your post up with a spoon. Love it and congrats on getting into such a well-fitting school!
-
Hi Guys ... I know I am sounding like a broken record, but any word on Brooklyn College or The New School?
-
Lavendercloud ... this is amazing! Congratulations! We want all the details, please ...
-
Princess -- Fantastic news. Congrats! Just goes to show that a good play -- MFA or not -- is all that matters. What is your reason for applying for an MFA at this stage in the game?
-
No worries, Lavendercloud. It was very nice to at least hear back from one place -- Not sure what the funding is like. I had heard they offer one or two very good department fellowships per year but not actually sure. I have a full time job that I will have to leave if I get into a program, so I will need funding to subsidize my expenses. I applied to NYU because I like some of their graduates (Rajiv Joseph, David Read) and truly am also interested in writing for TV ... but yeah, I was surprised to hear they don't put up a show. They also don't seem to have a class where the graduate actors read your pages, which I know other programs do and seems like a no brainer for a school with actual MFA actors who are good, as NYU has a great acting program. If any NYU Dramatic writing grads are on here, I'd love to hear from you!

We will have to leave it to Zissou to carry the Yale banner this year ... Had my NYU interview yesterday. It went very well, though from what it seems there are no real production opportunities. I am interested in the cross-discipline of writing for TV and film in addition to playwriting, but really the only reason I am applying to grad school is to study with some amazing teachers and see a show of mine put up. I have done many readings and workshops but not a full production -- I feel there is a lot to be learned from seeing everything come together in an actual show ... and that disappoints me about NYU. It seems they put up a 'reading' of your thesis work but not a show. Does anyone know people who have gone through the program there and really loved it? The classes also seem big to me -- 12 people max is what I was told. The most I have ever had in a workshop class is 8, and I always felt like 8 was a lot. Thoughts, anyone? Feeling very bummed about Yale and Brown at the moment. I am clinging to the hope that TNS and Brooklyn College have yet to notify. Also applied to Juilliard but that feels like a real shot in the dark at the moment. Thanks all for being so great. It's nice to come to the Boards to vent. I am keeping busy working on a new play, which is a drama. I tend to write absurd comedy and farce, and I am sort of regretting using one of my wild pieces for the application process this year. Wondering if it's going to be that I end up applying all over again with a more 'serious piece,' and perhaps that will get a different response. I have noticed that people on admissions boards/fellowships/play development places tend to respond less seriously to comedies -- even though I think that is what many audiences like to see. Dunno! Just typing and venting! I need a drink.

Has anyone heard anything about The New School? I know they schedule their actors and directors and writers for a weekend callback all together ... wondering if anyone has actor friends or director friends who applied just to see if there is still a possibility one could still hear ...
-
Just received my dreaded Yale decision. Ah well. Always hard when you see it in your Inbox, though.
-
Hi All -- Just received notification for a Skype interview at NYU tomorrow. Has anyone interviewed there before/has any advice? Thanks!
-
Echoing that Zissou ... Last year people knew by now for BC -- today, I believe, actually. Trying to hope that no news is good news, but sort of feeling like interviews probably already went out.
-
Hi Guys ... Just driving myself slowly -- or quickly -- crazy over here. I'm sure people would have weighed in already with any news, but is there any news on The New School, NYU, or Brooklyn College?
-
Oh Barista ... I'm with you.
-
@Zissou -- I hear you. Well, luckily they responded to your work! I am still waiting to hear back from four schools. Not sure why but feeling totally disenchanted, even though the schools I am waiting to hear from are wonderful. I thought my application this year was so strong ... anyone else sort of feeling just down in the dumps?
-
Very interesting! Thanks for sharing. Playwriting is so strange -- who responds to what, something one person loves another person hates. Of course, all that matters is that you end up somewhere that people like your stuff -- so this is a good sign for you Zissou! Congrats!
-
Zissou -- I recognize your name on here from previous years. Congrats on the interview! Out of curiosity, what do you think is different about the play you applied with this year vs. other years? (Just interested to know ...)
-
lavendercloud you are killing it today!
-
Has anyone heard anything -- through friends or anyone -- about The New School, NYU, or Brooklyn College?
-
Yay Lavendercloud! Glad something good is happening for somebody on here!!
-
Any news today? I had an inkling today would be a "news" day ... Guess I'm wrong, or it's just not for me!
-
Relieved to know I'm not alone with my thoughts ... Yes, saw that BC article, too. It was interesting as I find it super hard to find information on the program. I have even reached out to folks I know (through friends) who have gone there and for whatever reason have not heard back, so it feels super elusive to me ... but I have high hopes for my application there this year. That said -- my app was only processed like, a week ago because they kept not receiving my transcripts. I hope it didn't screw up my chances. Randomly, I also have a gut feeling -- don't know why -- that Yale calls went out today. I think my neurosis is in full swing for sure.

Also received a Brown rejection. I can't be surprised when they only take 2 people, however -- in my head, at least -- it felt like the perfect fit, my sample seemed up Erik's alley, and I had this innately good feeling about this particular application. I suppose that's not unique to me, but feeling a bit down about it. Also -- and perhaps this is just my venting -- I remember someone posting Erik's letter on the boards last year and being very impressed with it. I didn't apply to Brown last year, but it was actually reading that letter that made me want to apply. NOW, though, being on the receiving end of it ... I don't know. Something about it rubbed me the wrong way. I think it's this line: "Your faith in the program is a prompt to our efforts; I hope we are able to sustain a degree worthy of the attention you've paid." Everything else about the letter I thought was encouraging and sweet. This line made me feel like -- you have not accepted me into your program. Why should it matter to me if you are able to sustain a great reputation? Maybe I'm just bitter -- did it strike anyone else this way? It just maybe feels like a little too much. When you're on the receiving end of a rejection -- unless it's personalized -- perhaps shorter and sweeter is best. Just my two cents at this particular moment!
-
@tate -- Congrats! @lavendercloud. Sorry to hear this news -- you never know, though. They may feel that since they flew you down and met you last year, they don't need to see you again for an in-person interview. It's always so hard to say. The frustrating thing is to be so close one year and not the next -- the arts, and people's taste, is so bizarre. Even though none of the schools I applied to have sent notification yet, I'm sort of feeling down about this year. Perhaps it's just that I am working on a new play that is getting a lot of great feedback and wishing I had applied with that. Who knows. Happy Sunday, y'all!

@Princess -- I actually sent in sealed signed ones at the time I submitted my application (these are for BC and The New School). For some reason BC is not logging either of them, and TNS is only logging having received one (even though they were sent in the same mailing ...) I can't imagine how much mail these places receive, so it's understandable that things get lost. I don't know why people need hard copies at all -- I much prefer uploading unofficial ones to the online applications. Anyway!
