  1. I'm heading to the Courtauld this fall, minus my boyfriend. We have grand plans for him to be making a few visits over the course of my studies. I'm on a one year MA plan and am not sure where to live. Any one else studied or studying or about to study in London? Courtuald offers dorm housing, but if I remember undergrad correctly, it was stupid to try and have an guest in a dorm room. That said, I dont know really where to live in London, and I've been out of school for five years so I'm a bit concerned I'll be overwhelmed enough with the school aspect of life to also try to navigate a new city? I live in NYC so I'm used to commuting. But that doesn't mean I like it. Anyone have any thoughts or advice? Have you lived and studied in London before and did the commute drag you down? Are you a very cool studious nice person also moving to London and in search of cheap housing? If any of these apply to you, let's chat!
  2. I've accepted an unfunded spot at the Courtauld. It's a subject I'm very into and am psyched about it. I'm not psyched about finding money. I mean, even though it's a yr, it's a lot of loan debt to go into. I have had no success with federal funding, although some foreign enrolled students can get federal loans, apparently the courtauld does not apply? am i wrong? has anyone had success with this? i mean, i guess bite the bullet. but christ, i dont have any grand delusions about what an art historian's income looks like, at best. anyone else headed to the courtauld? let's chat!

    CUNY

who is applying to cuny for art history ma or phd? what's the deal. i get word of mouth that it's a good program. but as far as i can tell..well i cant tell. i cant tell a darn thing anymore. god. i just want to think about art and get paid.
  4. hey whats up. We're talking about the same Greenpoint. I've considered making the move to bwick but love greenpoint too much, sewage facility and all. Art history? cool. I'm squarely in film/media studies but it would make sense that schools w/ strengths in one would have them in both. good luck to you too!

  5. dear greenpoint grad,

i just moved out of greenpoint to bushwick. maybe youre talking about other greenpoints though. also, we're applying to many of the same schools. well that's a lie. but i looked at most of yours. im going for art history and studies in material culture.

word. good luck getting though the suck.

  6. thanks you guys! gosh what a mess this process is. i'm at a more peaceful place today...like when you're about to crash your bike and you fight it and flop around foolishly, but then there is a calm moment of zen right before you scrape up your pretty face. because...you're just totally going to fall. and somehow there is peace in this. (GRE is tomorrow morning. and somehow there is peace in this.) hope you guys are finding some good ol fashioned PEACE out as well.
  7. Hey all, So I'm freaking out and doubting myself and even though I haven't submitted a single application yet, i've all but lost hope and am nervous and sad at the idea of yet another year making coffee for strangers. anyway, originally i had looked at wisconsin-madison, but ruled it out simply because i couldn't see myself in wisconsin. And at the time my list was easily 20 schools long. it turns out my writing mentor as an undergrad got his phd there. i wasnt going to ask him for a letter, since i'm applying to study art history and this professor had helped me with my poetry major--and so only knows what a silly and often brilliant young poet i am : ) my question is, does his being an alum help me in at all? does anyone know? and doesn't this seem like a sleezy question. surly this is no way for a young scholar to behave.
  8. my GRE is next week and i cant concentrate on anything until then. but afterward i would love to do some peer editing/input.
  9. hey, Thank you! I believe that Heidleberg requires a pretty strong background in French or German. or both. But certainly worth looking into. (oh yes, i mean those websites...not those webcites)

    MA abroad

Hi! This is my very first post (hi, mom!) I'm a couple years out of school and aside from one very lucky gig at a museum, I've mostly been a slave to waiting tables and buying last minute plane tickets (my resume is, ahem, lacking). Being the ripe old age of 25, I'm planning on applying directly to PhD programs. Presumably these will be more difficult to get into without an MA. I'm having a hard time finding an MA program/location that appeals to me. I'd be very happy to get my MA abroad, perhaps master my miserable french or german skills while away. Finding these programs turns out is not so easy. Does anyone know of any they can recommend. Or any helpful cites?
