William I. Robinson at UCSB! Man, I need to get off this wait list haha.

I'd say tmp is probably right. It seems like a funding issue. You really are in a tough situation, especially given what's going on with the other schools you already heard from. There probably isn't much you can do with the Vanderbilt situation since it comes down to who does and doesn't accept before you, but you could possibly shoot an email to the dgs at penn to see what's going on there. Put a brief explanation of why you even emailed him and maybe even name drop the school to him. Then again, take everything I say with a grain of salt. I'm In a similar situation with acceptances and wait lists. I shot an email to my poi and the dgs at my top choice and didn't get a word back. So now I'm just hoping to get off the wait list at my other top choice before resorting to go to another program.

And even this doesn't always help. Looks like I'm going with another option.

Life makes sense now. Thanks so much.

James Bach, no? Don't make my heart stop, haha. He's the person I sent my application materials too as well. http://history.osu.edu/directory/Bach27

I did. He didn't respond. :/

This may not be the greatest question and you may not be able to speak on it, but are folks that come in with the waivers usually admitted later than those who aren't? There have been a few updates on the results page (the end of January), but I think the majority of us waiting still have a "pending status." I know that sometimes the posts on there are trolls, but these are legit since a guy I met through the diversity recruitment weekend in October was accepted. Thanks again for all the help! It seems you have made this process a lot easier for many people!

Wow. Political science really knows how to create extremely beautiful and informative threads. Today I learned that my 3.56 gpa and subpar/average gre scores are probably going to lead to a rejection from OSU (if the department of history works the same way). Thanks for the informative posts, Professor BFB! Back to the history and sociology forums I go!

How does she have a better shot of getting in? Why is everyone making statistics up in this thread? Unless this can somehow turn into a reasonable debate about the ills of the process, the mods (if there are any?), should really shut this down.

Everyone needs to lighten up, including op. Op, the system is fucked. We know it, you know it, they all know it. The fee is a scam and mistakes, especially with so many apps, are going to happen every once in a while. Although I believe some of your views are misguided, I would agree that the attitudes and culture of those in much of the West (not just the US), allow for plenty of systems like this. Everyone else, I see your frustration with op's posts, but good god. You'd think these admissions committees were your families or something. Warn op of the risks involved with sending venom-filled emails then send her to do whatever she wants. But to say things like Berkeley would have tens of thousands of applications without the fee is absurd and hilarious. Unless some bozo sends thousands of troll applications, I don't see it increasing by that much. And I would assume it's easy to pick out the serious applications. Not everyone and their momma wants to spend close to a decade in a dark archive looking through a bunch of mess in order to find the jewels they need for their research.

Fall 2014 Sociology Interviews and/or Acceptances
Whatishistoryanyway replied to Maleficent999's topic in Sociology Forum
I suppose this provides me with some relief! -
I'd like to know about the osu status as well. Mine still says pending and the dgs didn't respond to my email. I'm assuming rejection at this point. It was number one on my list, but it looks like I will be pursuing my other options.

Great ideas, guys. And maleficent, no emergency contact haha. Just find a way to check email every few days. The city I'm in now has quite a few Internet cafés though. -

Does anyone have any info on the admissions at UCSB? According to the results from last year, they began notifying people around this time by phone. Given my luck (if I am fortunate enough to be accepted), I am out of the country and do not have access to a phone. Does it matter at all? -
Also, I think the university has a cut off for fellowships. Based off the handbook, my gpa is about .04 shy of qualifying. I'm keeping hope for next week and I hope everyone else does the same!

Look here! We need immediate gratification! Haha

Nvm, I know who you are. We are FB friends. Congrats man.

Junot, you were there for the recruitment initiative? If so, who were you? I was also there. And unfortunately, my status still says pending :/

Help in whittling down my schools
Whatishistoryanyway replied to Heimat Historian's topic in History
Although it's not as highly ranked overall, I would look into Tennessee. They have some amazing germanists. -
I actually had the chance to go in october! There was a diversity recruitment program that I was invited to. About 100 or so people were there, but only five in history. I met with Hasan Jeffries and he seemed mutually interested in working with me, but I can only hope the rest of the committee approves (that, and I didn't have outstanding GRE scores). I sat in on his undergrad class and a grad class taught by someone else. In total, I met about 8 or so faculty members. I hope things work out for the best. And I'm sure I'll be refreshing my app status a million times a day next week seeing how they began notifying people on the 24th last year. Oh, and that's cool, glamdoll. Where are you applying to? And what types of programs
-
Cool cool. Hopefully at least a few of us will be there. I'm hoping to work with Hasan Jeffries and Stephanie Smith. Oh, and Curtis Austin and Judson Jeffries in aaas.
