  1. McGill is becoming a stronger force to reckon each year, specially in experimental linguistics. Regarding job placement, I know for a fact that one PhD from there beat two from NYU getting a job at the University College in London... So I think McGill is top of the game right now...
  2. Congrats to both of you!
  3. I am a psycho-and neurolinguist (or trying to be) and, in spite of being interested in it from a theoretical point of view, I have seen a better understanding of language processing and representations applied to education (especially, to learning writing processes), and even to langauge rehabilitation within aphasic population. And the work that is made in a interdisciplinary way (with neurosciences, physics, and so on) is hopefully based in good and comprehensive linguistic theory. I would believe the same happens with computational linguistics and NLP, and the applications that can be developed in those areas. So... I guess it does matter!
  4. Where did you interview? Any news from Yale? And hovariel, how did it go at UDelaware?
  5. Rejection from Hopkins.. It seems like a terrible day for me.
  6. Bad news from Rochester... They told me that they were highly impressed by my application and interview, but that lack of funding only allows them to admit 3-5 students this year... They told me that I'm in their top 10 over more than 200 students, but that, unless something very unlikely happens, they won't be able to offer me admission. Let's hope something very unlikely happens, right? Have a nice weekend you all!
  7. I think the only thing that was in a bold, capital, and color font in application websites was: "THE FEE IS NON REFUNDABLE". They have the priorities straight... ;P
  8. It's their loss, my friend! In 5 years or so, they're gonna come begging for us to teach there, !
  9. A decision has been made... I've been rejected at UMass They said that the department was not able to "recommend" my application to Graduate Admissions Office, because they received a lot of applications and, given financial issues, they could only recommend a few students. Let's hope it goes better with the others!
  10. I am waiting for my POI to contact me... I had an intervirew with another professor on Sunday 26th, and he told my POI was going to skype last week for another interview... I am still waiting!!! I don't know how long should I wait until sending them a "remainder"-mail, In the meantime, tomorrow I have another interview! Wish me luck!
  11. Hi, guys, I was just thinking... Has anybody applied to UPenn? It seems that a lot of you work in phonology, and I'm quite puzzled about nobody wanting to work with Dr. Embick! Just that, a thought that came through my mind... Best for all!
  12. Did you had an interview at McGill? Congratulations! That's a great place , =) I am currently collaborating in a project with a professor and a post-doc there. Regarding your comment, I had an interview yesterday at Rochester, and we also spent most of the time talking about my background in research (my current and previous one) and the linguistics concepts that it involved. It was a nice talk, but be prepared to be asked about theory, guys! Good luck!
  13. "According to the recent National Research Council rankings, the graduate program in Brain and Cognitive Sciences at the University of Rochester is ranked as high as 4th nationally among 236 PhD programs in Cognitive Science and Psychology (based on both the S-range and R-range measures). The BCS faculty ranked as high as 3rd nationally for research according to the Faculty Research Activity measure. The complete ranking information can be found at http://www.nap.edu/rdp/. A sortable list of rankings can be found here". This is the welcome text in the Rochester BCS website, so I think it's top 5, actually (probably after Stanford, UCLA, Harvard...)
  14. First interview went ok..., now waiting for more to come!

  15. Having an interview in a couple of hours... Excited, nervous, happy, and all adjectives we've all learned for Verbal GRE.

  16. Thanks, fuzzylogician! You're the best! I will go through threads and prepare for the interview..., but tomorrow. Today, I think I've earned myself some wine!
  17. I have just received an e-mail from Rochester, asking for an interview during the weekend. Does anyone know what kind of questions should I expect? It wasn't my POI who ask for the interview, but another professor in the Linguistcs department (Rochester doen't have a Linguistics PhD..., but they have a department and you can pursue a joint degree). Should I read some of his papers? Should I go through my whole application package and try to figure out possible questions regarding strengths and weaknesses? Should I try to relax?! Thanks, everyone, and good luck! Good things come to those who wait, =)
  18. I've been considering writing to the departments too... However, I personally think that sending a mail asking about results when they're still on time would be seen as being kind of a pain in the ass annoying... I think it's better to try to cope with anxiety at least until some results are posted and one knows for sure that they're sending invites to interviews/rejections/admissions...
  19. Don't be too worried about transcripts if you have uploaded a scanned copy. I (wrongly) assumed that all universities asked for a hard copy if they offered admission, only to realize that UMass and Johns Hopkins needed it even "for reviewing an application". Where I live, it is really difficult to obtain a copy of your transcript (plus, we're on summer holidays and my university is closed until February). I e-mailed both Hopkins and UMass with this issue... Hopkins will let me send it when my university reopens, but they will be forward my application to the adcom while my transcript gets there. UMass' answer was even better; they said that they already had my application under review, and that official transcripts were only a request of the Graduate Amissions Office, but that the departmente did not care so much... I hope my experience gives you some relief!
  20. I think (meaning, I hope) it's still early in the race... Look at results from last year. I won't be surprised if they send us an invite next week or the following.
  21. I only saw two invitations on the "results" (though the first one, on Januart 13th seemed a little "too early" for me...). Do you know anything else? I am struggling with anxiety!
  22. If someone keeps track of how many times per day I press F5 in the results page, they're gonna ban me from the site. I am using too many resources.
  23. Some results from OSU from today are appearing on the "results" page (an acceptance and a rejection, if I am not mistaken). Good luck!
