I emailed Chicago's polisci grad. school administrator about this yesterday and this was my response: "Thank you for your email and inquiry. As I am sure you are aware, the Office of the Dean of Students will email all official admission decisions and they expect to do so by February 18. In some cases, departments informally notify applicants of decisions earlier." So I imagine you'd get a similar response. Basically a non-answer.

Congrats to all the admits over the past couple days!!! These are all excellent programs! I have to confess though, it's getting old finding an empty inbox with all of these notifications going out, as I'm sure many others on here can confirm. Here's to a more successful rest of the week!

Chicago's my dream school for theory, congratulations!!! Everyone there is doing just incredible work (esp. Markell).

Last year there were a few stragglers, so I'm holding out hope that another few decisions will be announced in the upcoming weeks. But... it's not dark yet, but it's getting there.

Does anyone have any idea as to when it might be appropriate to contact a DGS regarding the status of your application? This is more specifically in reference to Chicago.
-
What a tremendous opportunity, you must be thrilled! Just out of curiosity, who contacted you? And what subfield are you going into?

Congrats to the Chicago admit!!! Will the Chicago admit please stand up?
-
Oh my gaad. The suspense is figuratively killing me.

That's certainly my hope, though I imagine that depends on the types of programs you're applying to. In my case, I'm applying to almost exclusively top-tier programs because I'm less-than-optimistic about potential future job prospects if I don't attend one. As such, I have to be ready (as much as one can be ready for something like this) for the possibility that I may not be accepted anywhere this cycle.

Ucla is the first I'm expecting to hear back from. So frightening, we may be hearing some life-changing news by this time tomorrow.

Earlier in this thread someone said they were 95% sure that UCLA would be announcing some decisions come Monday. Looking over the last couple years this seems pretty likely. Also, I was thinking that Berkeley, Michigan-Ann Arbor, and Chicago should all be coming soon. I think they all released some decisions starting this time last year, and continued to do so going into the next week. Please note that I have absolutely zero inside information, this is just speculation, but it seems likely to me at least. But yeah, I'm in some degree of agony as well. While I really want them to start making decisions, I dread the time when I see everyone else getting decisions and I conspicuously (w/c?) don't hear anything. Which is inevitably going to happen for a lot of the places I'm applying to, but I hope it's not too many.

The calm before the storm. It looks like 3 of my programs should be making decisions next week, with the other 6 following shortly thereafter. I may end up missing the quiet

Is this in reference to faculty at the university you currently attend, or a POI?
-
No kidding! None of the programs I've applied to have contacted anyone yet (as far as I know), and judging by past years I should be hearing back from six schools within the next two weeks, with the other three coming in shortly after. This is going to be a roller coaster of emotion.
-
Fair enough. That was probably a ted testy on my part. None of the places I've applied to have sent out decisions yet, so as you can imagine I'm constantly oscillating between ungrounded hopefulness and unnecessary despair.

This is very thoughtful and well-intentioned advice. However, please bear in mind that there are quite a few people on here, like myself, who are anxiously waiting to hear back from schools, who have spent nearly $800 on applications, GRE scores, and transcripts, and have spent a great deal of time thinking about what they'll have to give up to attend graduate school. No one is rushing into this decision, and no one in the middle of the process really wants to hear, especially right now, that they're making some huge mistake because they didn't take a year off.
-
Bear in mind however that many people will likely be turning down OSU's offer, so there remains the possibility that you've been wait-listed and could still receive an acceptance further down the road.
-
Congrats to this wave of admits!!! I'm really wishing I had applied to some places that made earlier decisions, alas. With UC-Davis having sent out decisions should we be expecting other UC programs (esp. UCLA and Berkeley) to be sending out notifications soon? I assume that they're on the same academic calendar.

If I don't get accepted anywhere, I think I'll...
wokeem replied to Domino's topic in Waiting it Out
I'm a triple major in political science, sociology, and philosophy so getting a career started is kind of out of the question for me in the near future . If I don't get in anywhere I'll 1) Start studying German more seriously so I can put something better than "poor" down for foreign-language proficiency, 2) Start studying to retake the GRE, 3) Schedule appointments with professors in my field to go over my application (again), and 4) Start submitting some of my seminar papers to undergraduate and graduate journals in the hops of padding my CV. Basically I'll just work on making myself a stronger candidate for round 2. While I feel relatively competitive at this point, it will be a godsend to have the time to focus on my applications and test-prep without the added pressure of classes. My university also has a great internship center, so if I get my rejections early enough I'll try and net an internship for the summer. -
University of Chicago sent out acceptances February 5th last year, so I would expect them to begin reaching out for interviews any second. Maybe they already have!
