  1. Just to repeat what others have already said, I would strongly advise you to focus your efforts elsewhere re: improving your application. I very much doubt your GRE scores will negatively affect your chances in any meaningful way. I got a 148 on the quant, 163 on verbal, and 4.5 on writing.
  2. I just received a (kind of) acceptance from UVA. The DGS said they liked my file, and while not offering an official admit yet, want to know if they'd still be in consideration. I went ahead and informed them I'll likely be attending Cornell (political theory), so hopefully someone else gets the spot. I also just barely turned down Michigan's offer.
  3. Still haven't heard anything from Chicago. I realize this was asked a few days ago, but it seems like a number of rejections have been sent out since then, but is anyone else still anticipating a response? I'm considering sending another email to see what the deal is, but considering Chicago's track record on that front I imagine I shouldn't bother.
  4. I can claim a Hopkins acceptance! Political theory.
  5. I can't help but think that Hopkins will be any day now. This well exceeds (by a whole 2 days!) the notification dates over the past 3 years.
  6. My sense is that most of the people who were frustrated by this comment were so because they assumed the author was white.
  7. Impossible to say with total certainty at this point, but yeah, more likely than not.
  8. So apparently UVA has sent out 4 admits staggered throughout the last two weeks? What on god's green earth are they doing over there??
  9. So I just heard back from the person at Cornell, and they assured me that it wouldn't have any effect whatsoever.
  10. I just emailed a grad school admin actually. I was hesitant initially, as maybe just asking could leave a bad impression, but obviously the stakes are much higher if I'm wrong about this, and I really need to be sure.
  11. I was wondering if anyone had some thoughts on whether or not it's a bad idea to withdraw from a few classes your last semester before grad school. I was recently accepted to two of my top-choice graduate programs (hurrah!). My acceptance was, as I understand at this point, only conditional regarding my actually graduating at the end of this semester. I am very much on track to do so, however, I am a triple major and have grown really tired of my last unfinished area of study. Note, this is not the area I am going into for my PhD. At this point I'm very much tempted to withdraw from the two classes I'm currently taking that would finish my major. Beyond preparing for grad. school and making all of the requisite visits to campus, I am working on an honors thesis in which I am very much invested, and I am trying to pick up extra hours at work to save up for the fall. These classes are really just serving as distractions at this point and I'd really just as soon get a W for them and not have to deal with the additional stress in what is, already, a fairly stressful time. Of course, in my personal statements to these programs I discussed my triple-major, and they're certainly going to see two Ws on my transcript if I follow through with this. Would I have any cause for concern that this could spark some sort of revoked acceptance? I plan on switching it to a minor, so I would have a two majors, one with honors, and a minor in the field I'd be abandoning. Also, I have emailed my thesis supervisor to get her advice on this matter and am waiting for a reply on that front. I'm just interested in taking in as many perspectives on this as possible. Not sure if this would matter, but I'd remain in two other classes.
  12. They sent out acceptances on the 15th last year. I'm not sure if their academic calendar is different this year, but considering that I'm strongly expecting early next week, potentially late this week.
  13. I STILL HAVEN'T RECEIVED ANYTHING. I DON'T KNOW WHAT THIS MEANS. I DON'T KNOW HOW TO TURN OFF CAPS LOCK, I'M VERY SORRY.
  14. Congrats, juedepaume! It's wonderful to see another theory admit on gc, much less another prospective cornellian! Like you I'm tempted to accept prematurely, but I suppose it's a sound idea to wait for more options to come in. For mental health reasons, I'm going to continue to go on refusing to acknowledge the increasingly marginal status of pt in the academy. I'm sure we'll all end up gainfully employed at top-tier research institutions.

    Cornell 2013

Hello everyone! I was recently accepted to Cornell's PhD program in Government. Still waiting for a few other schools to announce their decisions, but I'll most likely be taking this one. Someone mentioned earlier that the 12 month lease on student apartments begins in July. Does anyone know if funding packages will have begun by that time? I was assuming they would start in August, which may make it difficult for me to pay the initial deposit, or that month's rent. Edit: Ooooh, I'm "Caffeinated" now!
  16. I thought I would start a conversation for those recently accepted to PhD programs in political theory, or for that matter, anyone else who might be interested in this topic, to say a little bit about themselves and where they think they might be heading next year. Beyond getting a better grasp of what the theory community looks like on gradcafe, I think this may serve as a good networking opportunity. This is to say that I'm hoping that this thread may provide an opportunity to meet others who may be in your future cohort, and to allow some relationships to develop before the fall term begins. In any event, maybe we can just discuss our interests! I've met relatively few others at my undergrad institution that were terribly interested in this field, so I'm always excited to talk shop with those with similar interests. I'll start! I was accepted to Cornell yesterday, and I'm really ecstatic about the opportunities this will generate. I'm especially interested in agonistic democratic theory and continental thought, so I'm really looking forward to working with Jason Frank, Jill Frank, Alex Livingston, and Diane Rubenstein. Ithaca also looks beautiful, so Cornell has that going for it as well! Like many others, I want to wait until I have all of my options laid out before making the final decision, but I honestly feel like I'll more likely than not to accept this offer. I can still hardly believe that I got this offer, so I'm still very much on cloud 9.
  17. So I don't know if this is the most effective, or appropriate, place to do this, but I saw that another theory admit was posted for Cornell. Congrats to whoever that is! If you read this, shoot me a PM!!! I can't wait to start getting to know my (potential) future colleagues.
  18. Absolutely true, I should have made that clear.
  19. Thank you for the kind words everyone! The community here has been fantastic throughout this process. I also wanted to say, for those who are worried about this kind of thing, that my GRE scores were 163V, 148Q, and 4.5AW. So while I don't want to do anyone a disfavor in suggesting that they don't matter, remember that they're only a single, and sometimes minor, part of a much larger admission process.
  20. I can claim a Cornell acceptance!!! This is such a tremendous relief after the presumed rejections of Berkeley, UCLA, and Chicago. I was starting to look up stuff on Americorp in the event that I got across the board rejections. I'm crying my eyes out, this is such a good feeling!
  21. Well best of luck to you! I'm staring down the barrel of 3 likely rejections from Chicago, UCLA, and Berkeley, so I imagine we're feeling similarly lol. Your username wouldn't happen to be from The Velvet Underground would it?
  22. Try and keep your chin up, it's still early in the process! And did Chicago notify you specifically about a rejection, or are you assuming this? Edit: Never mind, just saw your "presumed" rejection sig.
