  1. I am sure that someone who is waitlisted will certainly appreciate it.

So are you going to UChicago?

I'm going to visit their Open House in April. I've got my visa approved and I'll be buying tickets later in March.

And I'm going to NYC for the Open House at NYU pretty soon, yay! (Will be my first time in the States. I expect to be overwhelmed =))

So, eventually, I guess I'll be choosing between these two. Although I still don't know the decisions of UMD and UMass, and there is this pending wait-list situation with MIT.

  2. Thank you very much for the information! I was thinking that it might mean I'd be on the waitlist, since at least two people were admitted already, but there's a good chance that they haven't decided yet if there are three of us in this situation on this forum.

And two more ppl I know who are not on the forum and are still waiting for the decision from UMass.

  3. Is there anyone who has heard nothing at all from UMass Amherst? I feel like a lot of people have already been rejected or admitted, but my status on the website up until this morning (the site is down right now) was "applied", and I'm not sure if I'm supposed to consider that a rejection.

I don't think that means a rejection, I'd rather consider it being tantamount to 'short-listed'. I had an interview with them two weeks ago, and they haven't got back to me yet. Additionally, from what I know, they don't necessarily do interviews with all the candidates they are considering. So I'd take your status (and mine) for what it looks like - 'pending'.

  4. Arghhh, I had totally forgotten about academia.edu and their snitchy policy of telling who saw your profile, when suddenly:

"Someone just searched for you on Google and found your page on Academia.edu. To see what country the search came from, follow the link below"

New Haven, CT and New York, NY. Both searches are from today... It makes me nervous to know they're vetting me, :P

I keep getting them notifications from academia.edu as well. But I must be much more googlable than you, so they actually put effort into finding you =)

  5. Hey everyone,

so, apparently, there is an Open House event at UMD this week. I did not get an invitation (I haven't heard anything from them yet). Does that automatically mean that I am rejected?  :(

Yes, they have an Open House on Feb 20-21. This is an event for short-listed candidates, so, if you didn't get an invitation, this most likely means that you aren't in the short-list, sorry.

  6. Haha got the hunch that there will be no rejection school on your list!  Congrats and hope you get off the list ;)

    Thanks =)

Well, I'm expecting a rejection from UCLA at the very least.

    wow, congrats!!!

meanwhile my flight got cancelled because of the storm so I'm going to miss an open house... let me hide under my blankets for a while... :(

    Thank you!

Where's the open house you're going to miss? It's not the one at Maryland, is it (I think theirs is on February 20-21)?

  7. Yesterday was an eventful day for me.

Got an e-mail from one of the NYU ppl with whom we'd had an interview earlier asking for a quick Skype conversation, during which she told me the dept had recommended me for admission. The official offer will be sent to me later, after the grad school does all the proper paperwork, but the decision's made. Bliss!

Later during the night (well, it was night in Moscow), got a letter from Chicago saying I'd been recommended for admission and specifying some of the details of the upcoming official offer.

I am a bit overwhelmed at the moment, but as soon as I come back to my senses (and after I'm through with my tomorrow's interview with a very cool linguist who'll be joining UMass in Fall), I'll start working out the way to visit the open house events later in Spring.

  8. Congrats onzeheures!!! Austin is a really cool city, I'd love to live there someday.

    Thank you!

From what I've learnt from my POI at Chicago (btw, our interview went splendidly well; I hope to be able to get to work with this person at some point even if I don't end up at Chicago), today they are having a departmental discussion about admissions. So, good luck to everyone who's applied there, keep your fingers crossed =)

  9. Hi! I'm going to the open house in Maryland, I'd be glad to send you any info. :)

I wasn't contacted by Chicago, but on the search results shows that last year someone was accepted after an interview, so it's a good sign!

    Oh great, thanks a lot!

P.S. Nice profile pic, btw. I've always loved de Saussure's moustache =)

  10. Hi everyone!

    Two quick questions:

    (1) Has anyone here been invited to the Open House event at Maryland? I am not attending (traveling from Russia is not an option for me at the moment, and the dept can cover my expenses only in part), but it would be nice to get some first hand information on how it went afterwards.

    (2) Has anyone been contacted by University of Chicago for an interview? I didn't even know they did interviews.

  11. haha thank you guys for stopping me from clicking the "send" bottom!

Onzeheures: can I ask when did you receive the interview invitation from NYU? Do you have any idea if they've sent all the invitations?

and does anyone have any news from UMichigan? Today is supposed to be their "notice" Friday. Little variance in the past 6 years...

I received the interview request on Wednesday, January 22, and we had a Skype conversation with two NYU faculty members earlier today. I don't know for sure if they have sent out all interview requests, but I don't think it's a good idea to pester them with e-mails about interviews at the moment. From what I know (based on my conversations with faculty from various US linguistics depts) they might be still looking through the applications, which means they are very busy at the moment. I am very impatient and nervous myself, but I think that waiting is the best option at the moment =)

  12. I know that transcripts are some of the last things to get matched up, but I submitted all of my materials early for UMD and my transcripts are still marked as missing, three weeks after the deadline. Is anyone else having this problem?

I'm trying really hard to stay calm and not freak out about this. I emailed the DGS as they suggest on the website. All I can do is hope they made it somehow and the website is just really out of date. *Breathing*

I don't think it's a problem. Mine are still marked as missing, however, I've already had an interview with someone from Maryland. Either they don't care much about transcripts at this stage, or the website is lagging behind.
