  1. Yeah, I’ve never missed class for anything other than attending a conference. I think the long and short of it is that there is no standardization in academia in regards to the things we’re discussing. Some professors are hardline and extreme, while others are more understanding. I guess the best bet is just to play it as close to the vest as possible and deal with a situation should it arise.
  2. Ugh. I didn’t even apply to Brown, but the bloodbath on the results page is giving me a stomach ache. I’m wishing ice cream and cookies to all of you having a hard time right now.
  3. You and I are very similar in our interests
  4. This comment is everything.
  5. It’s really interesting to hear everyone’s take on this. I’d actually never heard of Semenza before this discussion thread, but several of the things you’ve all pointed out here are things that I have hear from faculty members. One of the professor at my university, for example, told students that if you ever got less than an A in your graduate work, you shouldn’t be entering academia and that anything below an A- would be considered failing. Also, it wasn’t for illness, but I was out of town attending a conference last Spring and one of my professors made me Skype in to our 3hr seminar or fail the class (one absence = failing). It sucks, but it does happen. I don’t know if that’s the case everywhere, but I just thought I’d share my two cents. Thanks, everyone, for your insights!
  6. Brace yourselves: here come the Brown rejections Best of luck to all of you who applied.
  7. Of course not. I will do blanket posts about grad school professionalism, not rant about the people I’m in school with.
  8. Let me pose this question: as current or future graduate students, what questions would have/want answered about grad school culture (separate from the academic culture)?
  9. I mean they make fun of their students or talk about how frustrated they are with them.
  10. Seriously...quite a few of my co-workers miss the boat. The DGS has given two separate presentations on academic professionalism and they still post about their students on Facebook and Twitter. It’s unbelievable. That’s definitely going to be one of my posts.
  11. You kick ass. Thanks for the info And congrats again!
  12. Let’s rule out notification theories What letter does your last name start with, what’s your emphasis, and when did they contact you? That’s SO exciting!
  13. I emailed Davis for my rejection and got a really nice personal response, but haven’t received the “official” rejection notice either.
  14. That’s a lot of Ann Arbor acceptances! Congrats to everyone finding success this week!
  15. Anger begets power. Haha.
  16. I’m fairly certain that if I don’t get into Florida State, my undergraduate mentor will disown me, murder me, dig me up, bring me back to life, and murder me again. It’s his alma matter and he really wants me to go there. I’ve seen a Rhet/Comp acceptance and two Creative Writing acceptances, but no Lit acceptances yet. Here’s to hoping that means I’m not out of the game yet.
  17. Excellent! I’ll check it out and follow you. If you want to see what I’ve put together, it’s here: http://www.pearlspolishandprose.com. I kind of want to grow this into something cool and it would be awesome to have it as a collaborative project with grad students across the US. Also--equally obsessed with vlogging. I watch way too many stupid videos on YouTube. What is it about them that is so addicting?!
  18. Why must GradCafe put a limit on positivity! Thanks everyone for your suggestions and keep them coming. The academic stuff is great, but I also want to place an emphasis on the grad student lifestyle (i.e. eat well and clothing yourself on a budget, ways to de-stress, how to not murder your colleagues, etc). I’ll be looking for contributors, as well, if you want to submit articles
  19. Someone has already posted a bit about this on the 2014 Applicants thread, so you might be able to get a bit of info there
  20. When did you get the call, if you don’t mind me asking? I mean what time of the day? Congrats again. That’s wonderful news!
  21. Congrats! That’s way awesome. It looks like you’ve got a few great schools to choose from. In terms of questions, did they give you any info about the number of accepted applicants or anything that you think might be helpful for those of us waiting to hear?
