I don’t know about the validity of it, but there are concerns that research and ideas are being stolen not only by graduate students, but also by faculty members. A lot of people post unpublished, full papers and abstracts (like I said, I’ve posted abstracts) that other students/faculty are picking up on and, instead of citing them, they are taking the ideas and writing up their own versions. It’s a little scary. Like I said, though, I don’t know about the validity of it. It does make me nervous, though.

My Academia page is far less comprehensive than my LinkedIn because I didn’t start using it until a couple of months ago. I primarily have some of my conferences presentations listed with abstracts for my articles. I hesitate to post too much research on there because it’s become a sort of ethical issue. That being said, I plan to upload course syllabi and evaluations, abstracts for published and soon-to-be-published papers, and some sneak-peeks of my thesis. PS: I notice that you have an Implied Rejection from Irvine in your signature. I emailed Malcolm Bourne and got a response on Feb 19th that said they were still in deliberations, so maybe don’t assume rejection yet

In terms of not having heard back yet, I thought I’d throw in that I emailed Tina a few days ago and she told me all acceptances have gone out and all wait list notifications would go out before February 21st (yesterday), so it sounds like those of us who haven’t heard will be getting rejections shortly!

That’s what happened to me with UC-Davis. I had four of their grad students looking at my profile. So weird, huh? I asked about that in another forum and someone said that professors often solicit grad students to the social media/presence checking for them.

I just ate two donuts. I’m not proud of myself.

This application, faculty members from five of my potential schools have searched my LinkedIn or Academia page. Three of those schools have formally rejected me. I wish they’d stop getting my hopes up. Haha. PS: Folks, LinkedIn is sneaky: in your Notification section, it may say something like “2 People Have Viewed Your Profile...” but that doesn’t included premium account members who semi-hide their identity. If you go into your full “Who’s Viewed Your Profile” page, many more appear.

I know that they did interviews a few weeks ago and there are some rejections posted, but I don’t see any acceptances.

I think the poster meant disapproving of the schools insistence on you deciding by March 15th.

I subscribe to the idea that the more “hardline” you are, the less students respond to you. Don’t get me wrong, I think you should have very clear policies and procedures in your syllabi and that you should enforce them. But, like toasterazzi says, you really have to pick your battles. This is my classroom policy regarding cellphones: "You may bring your cellphone to class with you, provided it is on silent and does not become a distraction. Electronic distractions may result in a loss of participation points." If someone is using their phone to much, I shoot them an email and let them know. Problem solved. In my four years teaching, I’ve only ever had to take participation points away form two students for cell phone usage, and that was when I was teaching high school. Anyway, that’s my two cents. I hope someone found it helpful. Edit: I just re-read the original post. If a student routinely ignores you, I’d dock their participation/attendance grade and insist they come in and talk to you about it. If they are hostile toward you or continually act out (and if you are teacher of record), you can always bounce them from your class. If you aren’t teacher of record, you could ask your supervisor how they would prefer you to handle it.

I agree about the boxes from the liquor store. Best type: U-Pod from Uhaul. I just priced a move from my location to a potential school that’s 1600 miles away. I have an apartment full of furniture that cost me a lot of money, so I don’t want to get rid of it. Total cost--including fuel--to ship: $1022.00. That’s a lot less than driving it.

That’s always been my problem I would recommend writing out a few notes/questions and keeping them in front of you in case you stumble. But really, remember that you are AWESOME; they only interview the awesome candidates

I study film, but I like to eat food while I watch it. That counts for something....right? Right?

GradCafe dinner party? I created a “Literary Lifestyle Blog” this week and one thing I’m going to do weekly on it is gourmet eating on a grad student budget. I discovered a love for cooking this last year, signed up for the Top Chef University online lessons for $59 bucks (yes, I know, I’m a sucker....it’s been great, though), and cooking is what has kept me sane through my thesis and this application season. I say we should all go to the same PhD program and just have fancy dinners every night.

Do something to distract yourself. That’s what I’m doing with Florida State (because waiting is driving me INSANE!). I recommend cooking. I am currently making Twice-Baked Sweet Potatoes and Chipotle Crusted Pork Tenderloin. PS Grad school made me fat.
