Her last name starts with an "S." Mine is "H," but I haven't heard anything. Her theory is that this is the first round of rejections.

That rejection is a friend of mine's. She got a generic email at about noon today. She wasn't in contact with Washington at all. I applied to Washington, as well, but haven't heard anything.

I’m normally at PCA/ACA every year, but couldn’t make it this year because I have to defend my thesis right smack dab in the middle of the conference. Boo.

Long story short, I was initially planning on submitting a chapter of my thesis for my writing sample. However, at the last minute, I ended up having to remove a theoretical framing and changed the entire structure of my argument. I didn’t have time to fix it for my sample and, as it was the only one of high enough quality in my area of interest, it really burned me. On the advice of faculty, I ended up submitting the paper I chose because it’s getting published in a great journal this year. I should have submitted my undergrad thesis from two years ago (which was on film) or a seminar paper, but oh well. What’s done is done. At least I have a couple of acceptances at this point and the option of applying again next year if I decide not to take them.

Yeah, that’s very true. Apart from one program, I actually only applied to school with Film and Media emphases within their English department. If I do decide to forgo my acceptances this year, I will likely expand out of English departments next year. I’ve just been stubborn about it because I want to teach in an English department.

Haha oh man...that does suck. I think we’ve all made those mistakes. That’s why I’ve adopted a new policy of not looking over my materials anymore. Haha. Lush lovers unite! If I could, I would happily ship all of you bath bombs.

When I say out of my area, I mean that my writing sample was a postcolonial analysis of a 20th century work of literature and my area of interest is Modern Film and Cultural Studies. Haha.

We applied to a lot of different schools I probably would have been across the board rejected from the schools you applied to.
