  1. Crickets here too. Though I did speak to my POI at FSU, who said everyone would be updated on their status in the coming week or so (this was last Thurs) so I have hope I might hear from one this week. Now I just have to pray for good news.. I don't know what to think about Brown - they've invited certain candidates for interview; I'm not one of them, but then I am international. I don't know whether this is a Very Bad Thing or no problem!
  2. Oooh, in that case then there may still be a ray of hope! Oops lol
  3. Damn, I guess I'm NOT in then Congratulations on your acceptance!
  4. Sometimes I do wonder if Anth and Arch are staying true to form and carving letters in rocks / preparing vellum / crushing ochre - it would explain the wait!
  5. The reason I'm looking abroad to the US is that there's so little funding in the UK. This time last year, I was accepted to Oxford to take my PhD. I think there was only funding from the AHRC (Arts and Humanities Research Council) for one PhD student in that intake in the end. I was so happy when I got the letter, but a few weeks later I had to decline the place, because I couldn't fund it. They may as well have rejected me straight away - before I could start the course, I had to prove I had (or would have) just under £70k (so about $110k) to fund it; as I'd just finished my Masters, I had no idea where they thought I'd be getting that money from... As someone else upthread said, it's not fun having your education determined by something that you have no control over.
  6. There's a Brown Joukowsky result up saying top candidates have been invited to an interview weekend. Given I've had nothing, I'm not holding out hope
  7. Another Princeton Art Hist today... not looking good :/
  8. The professor I emailed about field schools at FSU says he should be contacting everyone in the next week or so to let them know... so hopefully I should know about one next week!
  9. There was a Princeton Art Hist acceptance today... Art Hist and Arch at Princeton is one of mine :/ erk!!
  10. Uh-oh, there's a Princeton Art Hist PhD acceptance up.. that's one of mine! Art Hist and Archaeology.. must try not to worry even more. There's nothing on telly and Blizzards servers are down - I have nothing to distract me!!
  11. Nice! We can celebrate / commiserate together! (When they actually DO something).. Must admit, I really don't know how my applications are going to go. I have what I understand is a decent GRE, and I think I've worked out my GPA correctly (MA was 3.83, BSc 3.14). Given that the PhD programs generally have an MPhil or a Masters incorporated into them, I don't know if my already having one will work for or against me. Here in the UK it's almost mandatory to have a Masters before thinking about PhDs, so the US system seems very strange to me. Honestly have no clue which way things will go. I hope I'd get into one - that's all it takes!
  12. Yep Joukowsky, for their Arch and Ancient World program
  13. I saw an Art History at FSU on the results page that made me sit up, but my application to FSU is for Classical Archaeology, and they don't seem be doing much yet. But it's kind of the same rough area... right??
  14. Archaeologist (of a sort) signing in. Mastered in Ceramic and Lithics, with a focus on the British prehistoric ritual. Eventually want to get into museum curation, and have spent a year as a curatorial intern with the UK govt. heritage body. Will need a PhD to even be seriously considered as a curator! I was accepted to Oxford and my alma mater (Southampton) but at the moment, the funding in the UK is dire so I'm now looking abroad - fingers crossed! I found the American universities odd in that archaeology is subsumed into Art History and / or Anthropology, so trying to pick out programs has been a little difficult. However, what I have seen in the US that I do not see in the UK is a much larger focus on curation. This is why I have hedged my bets towards the Art History side rather than Anthropology and settled on the programs I have. Columbia is probably my main choice, due to the close working relationship with the NY museums. I've never really been a field archaeologist, but give me some finds (any finds, even rubbish bits of pot) and I'm all over that. I hope to study the sacred aspects of material culture in the ancient world, but I wouldn't be averse to heading a little more down the art hist route and looking at ritual / cult / sacred imagery.
  15. I always thought POI was professor of interest too? I hope Brown does something this week. I'm getting tired of bar work and I'd like to know it's not forever!
  16. Do admissions offices in the US go through the weekend? I've seen some people saying they have interviews on saturdays and sundays.
  17. Religious imagery and symbolism in prehistory / the ancient world
  18. I'm trying not to think about it - for the career I'm looking at (museums / curation) even entry level needs a PhD nowadays. I have my Masters and I've spent a year working as a curatorial intern, but it doesn't seem to count for anything - I haven't managed to even get an interview since leaving the internship in September! This is my 3rd round of PhD applications (first round in the US) and it's really my last chance. If I don't get in anywhere, I think I'll just have to give up and get some sort of office job
  19. None of the departments I've applied to (Princeton / Brown / Columbia / FSU) seem to be moving. My applications were submitted mid-November and I'm getting stressed now!
