  1. No I agree and that's part of the reason I am willing to try long distance. But personally I think long distance is something I could do for a year or two at most. 5-6 years, no way. I'm not sure moving will ever be in the cards for my SO. I mostly don't understand how he refused to give any sort of idea which way he was leaning. Like I was literally leaving the next day and he just kept saying that he didn't know.
  2. I was lucky enough to get into a great grad program in a state about four hours from my hometown. I just moved down recently and I like the new area, but I am also away from my boyfriend of 6 years. We are in a good relationship but I realize moving isn't what he wants and I respect he pursues his goals and lets me pursue mine, but the only problem is he has refused to talk about our relationship status. I tried asking him if he had though about our options (break up/long distance) and all he would say was I don't know. I get this sucks for him,and me, but I don't know what to think. I don't want to push the issue since it upsets him and it's not like if we break up it's because we really want to, but I kind of need to know. Any advice on what to make of all this?
  3. My program offers a full tuition waiver and then a stipend on top of that. The stipend is about 22k and the letter said my pay per period is about 870. Now that I'm starting my apartment search, I'm nervous about choosing an affordable place since I will not actually get paid until I've already signed a lease. Does anyone have any idea how I can figure out approximately what I'll make a month so I can figure out a budget.
  4. Whose heading to UMBC in the fall?
  5. The official letter finally came. I am accepted provided I receive the scholarship I've been nominated for. It really sucks that I have a letter of acceptance and I still may not actually be accepted. It'll be such a low blow if I don't end up getting it after this.
  6. What lead me to think the condition may be lack of funding is that my POI has let me know my acceptance is based on whether or not I get the scholarship she nominated me for. Otherwise she simply cannot afford to fund me. I had literally e-mailed her earlier in the day asking about a timeline to hear results, to which she replied sometime this month, and that same evening I got the conditional acceptance email. It seems weird to me but I really don't know what to think. Guess I'm stuck waiting for the physical copy to come in the mail.
  7. I already graduated and my application status says they've received my transcript. But hopefully it is something simple like that. I want so badly to be excited but I don't want to get my hopes up.
  8. I received an email from the U of Saskatchewan yesterday saying I've been accepted and it gave me info on how to accept or decline and then said they were sending an official letter that will have info on any conditions that must be met to actually start. So I logged into my student account and it said conditional acceptance with the option of yes I'm attending or no I'm not. So now I have to worry what the condition is and I won't know until I receive their snail mail, said it could take up to 3 weeks. It seems weird they would give me the option to accept if there were criteria I needed to meet still, so I'm worried the condition is that they can't fund me, which is equivalent to a rejection for me. Had anyone seen this before? What was the condition in your case?
  9. Yeah the only info I've been able to get was through calling. I had, what I thought, were pretty good connections with my POIs there but they are yet to answer my email asking for updates. It's hard to be patient, but looks like there's no other choice!
  10. I called my department staff, I'm a Bio applicant because I never got a response to me inquiry email either. What I was told for my program was that acceptances had been sent out but the incoming class was not full. So if you haven't heard anything you were on hold, basically wait list. You may be in a similar situation. When I called the woman I spoke with was very helpful so I would say call and ask if you want updated.
  11. I'm starting to prepare for the GRE and I'm really looking to improve only my quant scores. The first time I took it I scored a 154 in quant and I got a 155 my next time studying with Magoosh. I am thinking about signing up for one of those expensive Kaplan prep programs that guarantee to increase your score but I want to know if anyone has any experience with these courses. I'm really aiming for a big jump in my scores to 160 min. and plan on only studying quant and full practice tests. Is Kaplan good or what other resources can max out my quant scores? Thanks guys, I feel like there's so much info on how to study the GRE its just as stressful deciding what to do as it is to actually take it.
  12. I'm waiting to hear back about scholarships for U of Saskatchewan. My POI has told me I'm accepted provided that I'm selected for a scholarship (I'm international so she basically can't afford to take me otherwise.) Anyone in the same boat? This is kind of my last hope of going to school this fall so I'm dying for info
  13. I applied to the University of Saskatchewan but because I'm an international applicant my POI said her taking me on as a student depends on if I receive a scholarship from the school. I'm supposed to know "within the month" but the wait is really taking its toll.

Has anyone applied to University of Maryland Baltimore County and heard anything?
  15. Same for me. I interviewed with a professor at USF and I thought it went well, he even asked when I was thinking I'd like to start if accepted. But its been a month or more since he's said I could expect to hear a decision. In my experience if a deadline is way past and you haven't gotten news, its a bad sign. But I can't figure out why they just haven't rejected me already! And I don't want to email my POI and put him in a position where he has to tell me I'm out when I think it's kind of obvious already. This is just my case, the deadline to hear back is so far past, for others who are just a week or so past or weren't given a date to hear a decision I wouldn't worry as much.
  16. Same for me. I interviewed with a professor at USF and I thought it went well, he even asked when I was thinking I'd like to start if accepted. But its been a month or more since he's said I could expect to hear a decision. In my experience if a dead
  17. So I called a school I applied to earlier this week and asked when they typically send out admission decisions. I was then told that the committee was finalizing decisions and we would know soon and that if I had not yet received a rejection that I was in their holding pattern. Now the smart thing to ask at this point would have been what is a holding pattern. But I was so focused on the fact that she implied they sent out some rejections and I didn't get one that I thanked her and ended it there. So has anyone heard this before? Is this like a wait list or something? I didn't give her any info about me so I know she wasn't giving .e specific information about my application itself.
  18. During my interview I was told when the department would be meeting and when to expect a decision and that deadline is way past with no contact from them. But the fact that they haven't rejected me yet keeps that little glowing unhealthy flame of hope burning. At this point I just want to hear something. Should I call the admissions office to inquire, or shoot an email off to my POI restating my interest or should I just wait it out? I realize this is more of a waiting it out topic, but I'm applying to Biology programs and wanted the perspective of others in Bio too. I have checked the results page but there was only one post ever for this specific program from several years ago. I really want to be able to move on from this school but feel like I can't until I know I'm out for sure. Grad schools have apparently never heard of a mercy kill.

    Any USF applicants?

I Interviewed by Skype two weeks ago and was told I'd hear back last week. I still haven't heard anything and haven't gotten a response from an e-mail to graduate coordinato sent this week. I'm assuming rejection or waitlist perhaps.
  20. I haven't seen a lot of activity in the results section for the University of South Florida for biology. Did anyone apply there and have you heard anything?
  21. What happens if the people who you have contacted from a school are not on the committee? I'm curious how much sway they have over decisions or what kind steps the committee takes to hear their input.
  22. I just don't understand why the POI I interviewed with would give me a date to expect to hear my admission decision if he was not interested in admitting me. I feel like if, after speaking with me, he knew I wasn't the right fit he would have been less specific in when I'd hear back or wouldn't have brought it up at all-I didn't ask, he mentioned the general date on his own. But from past experience I know silence is not a good sign so I'm assuming rejection.
  23. I was going strong but I've finally succumb to the torture. I've been contacted by two schools and although I know it's too early to give up hope, the wait is killing my spirits. Last week I had a Skype interview with a POI and it went pretty well. He asked when I'd want to start if I got accepted, which I know isn't fool proof but I thought it was a good sign. Then he told me the admissions people were meeting soon and I could expect to hear from them mid next week. Which is now, but so far nothing! Ugh. I also spoke with a POI from another university last week who told me I have a strong application and suggested I come down to visit on my own since they only have a few spots to offer this year. He told me to Email him to plan when to visit so I did late Monday and he hasn't answered yet. My mind is starting to become my worst enemy more each hour that passes with no reply.
  24. It wasn't too bad answering here since it was a top choice school, but I've been asked this from POIs from other schools and it always kind of gives me a start.
  25. Why do professors ask you what other programs you have applied to and how should you answer this? The POI at my top choice school asked me this is an email and I answered honestly what other programs I've applied to and mentioned that this program was a top choice for me. Any opinions?
