Loma Linda University Communication Sciences and Disorders

Congrats on deciding where you are going to attend and getting offered a Research position. That's incredible! I was thinking of calling Diane too, I am so nervous about making a decision, and don't want to pay to another school and then have to back out. I would feel terrible. It's so stressful, and I still have three other schools to hear from. Just praying God makes it clear which one I should be at. Anyways, good luck to you. I saw someone from LLU turned down their spot this weekend, so maybe they'll let some people know sooner. -
I e-mailed them and they said second round acceptances were going out this week! So hopefully soon!!

I think you'll be okay on the essay, it wasn't a difficult question and if you are an English major then I imagine you'll be just fine! I heard back about 3 weeks after my interview? They said 2 to 4 weeks, so it was right in between when I heard, but it was updated on my application online far before I got my letter in the mail. Really, just be yourself. Talk about your experiences that you have had, and your reasons for wanting to pursue this field. If you are genuine, they will know! Have questions to ask them ready too, you want to know as much about the program as you can! Good luck, I'm sure you'll be great. -
Congrats! I went to Appalachian for my undergrad. Boone is beautiful

For me, a couple reasons. It is an Adventist University and i'm Adventist, so I would appreciate the religious aspect of it and incorporating ministry into career is important to me. I know a large number of people out at Loma Linda - and a girl in the program that loves it and speaks highly of it. Coming from NC, it'd be a long ways to move but having that support and knowing people would be helpful. They also have a lot of placement opportunities, and sometimes allow you to go elsewhere for placements, which I think is great - because I could come home for a placement if I wanted to. I also volunteered with a SLP here in Asheville and she was a travel SLP for 10 years. She spoke very highly of LLU and said that if I got an education from there, it would be highly recognized and an excellent education, especially if I wanted to work in acute and with adults, because of the Loma Linda Medical Center. She said all the SLPs she knows that came from LLU loved it and are some of the best SLPs in the field. She's worked in a lot of big hospitals - Emory, Stanford, Wake forest, etc. so she's very smart and knowledgeable. California is a larger area and much different from the East Coast, and I've always wanted to live in a different setting than Asheville and Boone, NC which are similar. Also, one of the biggest reasons is they have a swallowing/dysphagia placement with an ENT. When I met the professor in charge of that, I was very impressed and excited about that, because that's what I want to specialize in. Any program that has a big focus on dysphagia and has a specific clinic for it is important to me. Those are just a few reasons. You were accepted right? Are you planning to attend, and if so - what are your reasons!? Congrats btw! -

Yeah, I feel the same way. LLU is a top choice for me, but it's hard when they don't give us more information about the wait-list. If I knew I was high up, then i'd consider waiting, but I guess we'll just have to see. Good luck to you, and glad you at least have an acceptance. That makes it a little bit easier -

Wishing we could hear something about the wait-list. I've been accepted somewhere else and have until the 15th to say yes, but would love to attend LLU. I am thinking of calling around April 8th and asking? Not sure if I should or not. has anyone else on the wait-list heard anything? -
Accepted AND wait listed...Now what?

I'm in the same situation.. On a waiting list and still haven't heard from a few, but accepted to a great school. It's tough to know what's appropriate. -

I know right, i think the same thing. If only people had told me I need a 4.0 to get into school. BUT don't lose hope. I also graduated with a 3.46 and have gotten an acceptance, and wait lists, as well as have 3 more schools to hear from. It's not always the GPA - and sometimes it helps to find schools that look at more than just the numbers, and especially those that do interviews. It tells a lot!! You just have to find the right fit for you. -
Tennessee State University Applicants??

Thanks for the update. I wonder why their decisions go out so late. Good to hear that we haven't missed anything, but still going to be hard not having heard from them - as most places you have to decide by April 15th. Good luck to you!! -
I used magoosh.com - it's online, which is the way you take the test so I felt like it was similar and very helpful. they have tons of practice questions and tests, as well as videos on EVERY section of the GRE and even writing. it was incredible. I split the cost with someone, and we shared the login - but you can erase your answers and start fresh too, at anytime. it also lets you see what your average school will be based on how well you do on the practice questions and tests. It's awesome! Maybe see if they have any deals for it. we got it on sale last summer.

ASL Is very beneficial for SLPs, especially in child clinics. You use them a lot. With Apraxia children, as well as those with special needs. Honestly, you can probably teach yourself. I had an old teacher give me some lessons and she recommended a few books. I'd buy one off amazon, they aren't too expensive and maybe find a friend that can do it with you. Learning the style and facial expressions is what you want someone else for. Emotion and facial expression/body language is so important in ASL. Sometimes you can find deaf churches, deaf communities and once you know a little about it, i'd go watch and see if you can interact and learn! ASL is incredible. Such a beautiful language.

Trying to figure out information about Abilene TX. Possibly going there for graduate school - have been admitted and waiting to hear from other schools before making a final decision. Where are the best places to live, cheapest - for a graduate student. Good places to get jobs off campus, any information about the city would be helpful!
-
Has anyone that's been accepted to Abilene Christian University made a Facebook page? It would be nice to "virtually" meet some other prospective students, and figure out where you guys plan to live/roomates, etc?! If anyone is going to the preview day, please let me know how it goes. I am from NC and not able to make it to the preview day on Friday. Would love to know as much as possible!! Congrats to everyone accepted.

Yeah, definitely research and call schools! Get as much information as possible about the different programs you are interested in. Some schools will allow you to go to other places for your practicums as well - so that might be an option, if you could live elsewhere for a summer or part of a semester? Most schools will help you find a CFY I believe, at least searching and finding something within your area of interest!!
-
I agree, i'm not sure it matters M.A. or M.S. it's just where its housed in the school. I think it comes down more to the clinical placements and practicums you choose for medical settings and where you choose to do your CFY. A medical oriented school would be wonderful, but a degree from any masters program will still look good and get you the classes you need. If you want to work in a hospital, i'd look for schools that have good placements for Medical settings, with maybe bigger hospitals or acute care programs, etc. The core classes won't matter near as much as your placements and experience in the area you plan to work in. A Medical school may help a little bit with getting a better CFY at a big hospital, but really it will come down to your knowledge and experience no matter what!! Good luck searching!

Definitely understand. My parents were the same way last year :/ it's hard to understand how competitive it is from outside, and parents just want the best for us. I'm sure you'll get in - 4 more schools and 2 wait lists!!! -
I am from Asheville Johnson City is nice, it's small - so no definitely not trafficky at all and close enough to visit Asheville, Boone and some other places in TN. It's a good location and definitely things to do! I applied to ETSU also, haven't heard back yet! Thank you though, i'm so excited to be going somewhere!

Mine just updated.. Denied! I am okay with it though. I went there for undergrad, and am excited to be going somewhere different. Good luck to everyone else, hope you get in where you wanted! I understand your frustration. That was me last year, and i'm still waiting to hear from 4 and a waitlist. It's such a long process and so competitive that it's hard. :/ They should have better systems but unfortunately they don't. I hope you get in or get off a wait-list!! It will work out, don't give up! -
Thank you All! It's a blessing - their tuition is pretty expensive because it is a Christian and private school, so that is DEFINITELY a help, and I could get a job too, to help even more.! It's a blessing.
-
Got offered a $5000 dollar scholarship for Abilene, for each year!! WOW, God is good. Was definitely not expecting that, but they had scholarship money become available. That's a blessing. Maybe feeling like God is leaning towards wanting me to move to Texas! Might need some cowgirl boots! Still waiting to hear from other schools, but its refreshing knowing I am going somewhere. Don't lose hope everyone - this was my second year applying, after 4 rejections and 2 wait lists that turned to rejections last year. It's not always about stats. I have a 3.46 undergrad cummulative, and 3.9 in major GPA, and just above average GRE Scores. Find a place that is a perfect fit for you - and you fit them!
