  1. Really sorry to hear that!
  2. Your UW-M info is a bit out of date, I believe. At this stage are you looking for best offers received (and best waitlist received) or offers accepted? I can PM you some more up-to-date info.
  3. Congrats!
  4. It will vary from faculty member to faculty member (and from class to class) as far as the workload. There is a seminar on Expressivism at UW-Milwaukee this semester that will have read a few books by the semester's end. I audited a seminar on Hegel where some weeks (though not most) we read ~100 pages from the Phenomenology of Spirit. In other seminars, we read 2-3 journal length papers each week. I'm not aware of any seminars that had what I would consider a light work/reading load, but workloads can occasionally be heavy. Likewise with assignments, some professors want weekly response papers, some want 3-5 longer response papers (3-5 pages usually), and some don't want anything other than your term paper and participation. With term papers, lengths are usually 12-15 pages or 15-20 pages unless the professor wants or offers the option of a two-paper semester, then you would have two 8-12 page papers (or thereabouts). In summary: it varies, but I can say that I found my experience wasn't especially intense work-load wise (though it was intense in other respects, like with the writing sample and thesis).
  5. Really sorry to hear you were shut out. It feels bizarre that one of the most active contributors to this forum and someone who created blogs, surveys and charts to help organize information for applicants has been shut out. I wish you the best of luck with your law school decisions.
  6. I got my rejection from UCLA today. Email to check the website.
  7. Congratulations!
  8. If you plan on transferring out of USF, then just go with GSU. If you want to get an MA and then go to another PhD, you might as well go with the one that will give you best odds. One thing you have to weigh into this is how competitive you care to be in the job market. Is doing philosophy worth it to you if you end up adjuncting (not that adjuncting is inevitable, but it's not an unlikely worst case scenario)? If not*, it's best to take the route that offers the most likely best case scenario (even if that scenario isn't likely) especially because you only suffer two years of opportunity cost at GSU. If you don't care to be competitive on the job market, but want to be sure you get a PhD then USF is definitely the option you want to go with. *- And assuming you're not ok with spending 5-7 years on a PhD only to find work outside of philosophy.
  9. PODs are indeed great. U-Haul has cheaper wooden ones, though that makes them a bit less secure and they can't hold as much. The logistics can be a little tricky sometimes. They aren't always reliable about getting to your destination on-time or getting picked-up on time, so you can risk having an unwatched box of stuff on the street. You should make sure your destination allows them on the street so you know whether to have the moving company hold them at one of their locations (U-Haul does this at least) or whether you can have it delivered to your street. Milwaukee, as it turns out, does not allow PODs on any of their streets.
  10. Congratulations! Also, moving logistics suck.
  11. Congratulations!
  12. Thanks! Thanks for the recommendation. I'm not much for Thai, but that will be a great place to go when my girlfriend visits as she likes Thai.
  13. I turned down Purdue and accepted my offer at Riverside. Hope someone gets into Purdue as a result, it's a great program there!
  14. Thanks. Given that he's probably very busy/behind, I wonder if I should call like I planned (also it sounds like I wouldn't get an answer anyway).
  15. Do you know who would be best to contact about the status of one's own application (or whether doing so would do any good)?
  16. Congratulations!
  17. I wish I could upvote, way more creative than my suggestion.
  18. Ayn Rand, of course.
  19. Congratulations!
  20. Thanks! It looks like I probably got your friend's offer.
  21. Just got off the Purdue wait-list for funding. I should be making my decision in the next day or two.

  23. Also, Dreyfus may very well be retiring soon. He'll be turning 85 this year.
  24. Despite looking at the program last year, I somehow mysteriously didn't apply (what was I thinking?!). I think there's some kind of witch-craft involved. Congrats on LSU, btw!
  25. Even moreso, some programs that are lower ranked still have excellent placement records (see: Georgetown, Johns Hopkins) and some of them are remarkably strong in certain areas despite having a low rank (see: Florida State for free-will, Johns Hopkins for German Idealism). I'd also like to point out that UW Milwaukee had a pretty similar placement record last year (a better proportion of T20 placement, but less overall reliability): 5 of 11 into T20 1 of 11 into T21-35 1 of 11 into T35-50 1 of 11 into Unranked 3 of 11 Unplaced
