I probably won't be making my final decision until early next week. So I'll probably call them around April 9th or 10th.
-
The difference, as I see it, is that you suggested a generalized campaign of calling up programs that had not yet rejected people, in mid-February. That's rather different than suggesting that people who had made their final decisions but were still waiting to hear from UCLA in the final week or so call to ask about their status. For one thing, it's nearly two months further into the process and during the absolute final stage. For another, UCLA has a history of rejecting people at the last possible minute which is far more unreasonable than failing to notify people two months before the deadline.

RE: UCLA, once I've made a my final decision regarding programs other than UCLA, I plan on calling to ask about my status. I suggest others do the same. It should leverage some pressure to change their policy and I think it's pretty reasonable to want to be able to finalize one's decision rather than wait for a program that won't reject you until the last possible minute (especially because it will just contribute to the chaos of April 15th).

Nope, haven't heard anything on that front yet.

Based on my visit, all of the faculty I met were very nice people! It seemed like a great program there, so I don't think you would regret reapplying if you didn't get in.
-
Really sorry to hear that. Here's hoping you get lucky.

Maybe my landlady was really lenient, but last year when I was in this position I just told her the situation and that since there was a very concrete deadline (April 15th), she would know for sure about renewing the lease on that date. She seemed fine letting me delay the renewal (or nonrenewal) until then.

Thanks for clarifying, ianfaircloud. Sorry also for overlooking mightymike11's stronger claim (that it has always been Brandeis' policy)
-
ianfaircloud, is it possible things might've changed between 2012 and 2014 as far as their policy or do you have information for 2014 as well? Not trying to take a side here. Maybe someone else with a Brandeis offer might be able to weigh in.

Can I ask what your AoIs are?
-
Congrats!

No, but it might be surprising to someone who read had only read his recent work much of which was less than stellar.

Congrats, dgswaim!

About my claim that he's a lot less crazy than most people think or about the fact that he's a lot less crazy than most people think?

The comment thread on this post might give some insight. Sounds like it's at least partially wait-lists and partially bureaucracy (departments have to notify some other entity and that entity is responsible for sending out rejections, presumably processing has to happen to make sure everything is 'official' before it's sent out). There might be other reasons as well.

To anyone who ends up attending UW Milwaukee: It looks like Margaret Atherton is teaching her seminar on Berkeley again. I highly recommend it. It's probably the best course I took at UWM, and I'm not even that interested in early modern! You'll learn good historical scholarship, great reading skills and you'll also learn not quickly assume the received stereotype of a historical philosopher is the correct one. Also Berkeley's a great writer and a joy to read (and a lot less crazy than most people think).

Perhaps it's unwise of me, but the reverse is true in my case. I'm pretty shy on the phone or in person, but much more willing to be direct in the context of email, PMs etc...

Hi all, I'm posting here on behalf of someone I know who is interested in pursuing art. Since she would be enrolling at the undergraduate level, this may be an inappropriate place to post this. But I thought the pool of people here might have the requisite knowledge since you are all probably fairly familiar with the academic art world. I also don't of know anywhere else to ask. She is primarily interested in comics and so presumably would be looking for programs with a sequential art (or cartooning?) major. Does anyone have any suggestions for resources that would list good schools for those majors? The information I have been able to find while googling is disorganized and minimal. Does anyone have any suggestions themselves? Proximity to California is ideal but not at all necessary. Thanks! I hope I'm not cluttering up the message board inappropriately.

Turned down my offer from the New School (though I don't know if they waitlist so it may not matter).

Glad to see so much good news today!

Congrats, zizeksucks!

I think Establishment raised some important points. Don't go to an MA program that you expect you'll be bored to tears at, but overall placement record is more important than AoI fit. I think it's also good general advice to be open minded: I know someone from a very analytic undergrad whose adviser there mocked Hegel. She came to UWM interested in logic and philosophy of science. She's now writing her thesis on Hegel and has been admitted to three programs that are very strong in German Idealism and which all have good Hegel scholars. You're just as likely to change your interests at an MA as at a PhD (and you have all surely heard the old saw about interests changing) and it's a good opportunity to get a broader familiarity with philosophy at the graduate level. That's a really valuable experience. On top of that, unlike at a PhD program you won't have much more than two semesters to work closely with faculty you're interested in before you start the application process. It's even possible that the faculty member in your AoI that you really wanted to work with will be on sabbatical or some other form of leave during your first year.

Question: I've applied multiple years. Is this survey just for this year's data and, if not, should I fill it out once for each year I previously applied?

Thanks for the info!

Congratulations! If you have any questions about the program feel free to PM me.
