  1. You can't count on what they said, but it's a good sign. I don't think it helps professors at all for there to be more application fees paid, so I wouldn't worry about that. But until you get an actual formal acceptance there is no telling.
  2. It doesn't sound to me like you aimed too high, but this whole site is really the blind leading the blind.
  3. Got rejected by Texas A&M today. My first rejection. I figured that one was a long shot for me (though I figured the same about Florida, where I did make it).
  4. Well, that's OK I guess. So far I am 3 for 3 on acceptances, so perhaps your impression is different from that of the schools to which I've applied. Thankfully. One of my biggest math weaknesses comes from the fact that I took Calc 2 in 1992. I should really revisit that material at some point.
  5. Cool - we'll have to keep track in case we both end up there!
  6. Another update: Tennessee had sent me an email rejection before, and a bit later, someone from there emailed me to say (among other things) that though I might get a rejection notification, they might overturn it. And today in the regular mail I got a letter offering me admission. So I am now three for three, which is very surprising.
  7. I got my third notification today. So far I am two for three.
  8. Yes, acing the subject GRE is something I'm keeping in mind as a project for next year if I don't get in anywhere this year. Right now I don't have time to study for it, and on practice tests I don't do very well.
  9. Got mine. Fortunately I got my first acceptance last week, so it wasn't as bad as it would have been. It was still a bit of a bummer.
  10. I'm honestly not that great of a candidate in some obvious ways, so I'm not too surprised. I'm glad I got accepted by UNT already, though, so I don't have to feel like I am not going to get in ANYWHERE. Of course, it remains to be seen whether I'll get a funding offer anywhere. But we'll see! My life is pretty good, and not going to grad school is not going to screw it up too bad.
  11. I'm not really sure. Algebra, maybe, or combinatorics. Or algebraic geometry. I really have no idea, but probably not something in analysis.
  12. Got rejected by the University of Tennessee today.
  13. I originally wanted to make an Excel or Google Docs spreadsheet to keep track of everything, but the process of gathering all of the different information seemed overwhelming. Instead, I stapled a bunch of sheets of paper together, used one sheet of paper for each school, and just looked at the websites to see what to do. Anything I did, I wrote down that I did, and anything I needed to do, I wrote down with a checkbox next to it, so I could check it off later. I wrote the deadline for each program at the top of its sheet of paper. This gave me lots of room for freeform things like my various ID numbers, usernames and passwords, email contacts, etc. It worked great, and kept me from being intimidated.
  14. It's exciting times, all right. I'm not expecting to hear from most of my programs yet, but I unexpectedly got an acceptance to one a couple of days ago, by email. No funding info until March, though, and I'm all about the funding.
  15. I have a hard time taking your comments about writing seriously when you write like this, even in an Internet forum.
  16. I'm happily dating a total math dork right now. It's the bomb.
  17. Thanks, Appmatharmy. I don't know if you saw in the other thread, but I got accepted by University of North Texas today. So I guess the answer to the thread title, at least, is "yes."
  18. I got an email notification of acceptance to the University of North Texas today. It was my first one. Pretty exciting. I won't know about funding until early March.
  19. You know about the admissions results page, right? You can do a search like math* or appl* math* and get all of those results, then put the resulting RSS feed (symbol from the address bar) into an RSS reader. That's what I've done.
  20. I think probably the needless worying and stressing I've done over various aspects. I was worried about my LORs because of so many horror stories here, but all of my professors got them done on time (except one that got missed and then done a bit late after I let the professor know about it) without much prompting from me. I was worried that so many schools didn't seem to get the transcripts I sent last (after the semester ended and grades came out), but eventually they all did show up, and I think those schools were backed up. I've just worried about a lot of stuff that I think I didn't need to worry about.
  21. Right, yes, it's even worse than you thought. But, the OP's unfortunate experience aside, hopefully most people in a position to be comparing grades are aware of this.
  22. Ormalv, you're a little off in your US grading numbers. In general the correspondence with grades goes like this: 90-100: A (4 pts) 80-90: B (3 pts) 70-79: C (2 pts) 60-69: D (1 pt) < 60: F (0 pts) Some schools have plusses and minuses as well.
  23. Me too, actually. I hadn't thought of it in terms of admissions chances exactly this way, but I'm hoping that they increase my chances for funding. My GRE scores are WAY stronger than the rest of my application, I think, especially my combined score (only half of which will really matter to math departments, but all of which might matter for school-wide funding).
  24. Waytooold, I'm 35 and not as far along in the career thing as you are, but my situation feels somewhat similar. I have a high-paying job (high by my standards, not quite six figures) that shows no signs of going anywhere, and I could stay here and accumulate things and have a stable life. I live with my boyfriend, who is in a similar position. And both of us are applying to grad schools - some in the same cities, some not. If I don't get in anywhere, part of me will be relieved to be staying in this situation for at least another year. I'm not sure I will succeed in getting the PhD I'm after and, if I do, I'm not sure what I'll do with it. But sometimes the idea of staying in my job another 5 or 10 years feels really intolerable, and I do love school very much. So...we'll see, I guess.
  25. All I have so far are a few confirmations from departments that my applications are complete. I'm not expecting to hear anything until mid-February at the earliest. (My earliest deadlines were Jan 1 and a lot of my applications aren't due until Feb 1 or Feb 15.)
