  1. I'm in the same boat, different schools. The school that notified two weeks ago I emailed, thanking them for their consideration during this busy time of year, and explaining that I wanted to know b/c I'm trying to plan campus visits and need to know if I should include their school. The school that has results up on the boards from only a week ago I'm waiting on b/c they're a big name and I don't want to potentially piss anyone off. Also, I'm not quite ready to hear "no" from them yet.
  2. ran out of upvotes so I'm replying to say I loved the post.
  3. really? is there such a think as too cold? although i've been told i eat ice cream at inopportune times (climates?). in the dead of winter, while visiting a friend in boston, i made her take me for ice cream. YOMMM it's only a temporary reprieve i assure you. yes. exactly. still looks good to me. You win. Everything.
  4. No upvotes left but YAY!!! Your good news is my good news! ICE CREAM FOR EVERYONE!!!
  5. ahahhaaa! i have ben & jerry's cookie dough sitting in my freezer.
  6. I applied there because I'm a recovering Victorianist. I was impressed by the resource centers/research groups on campus that were dedicated to Latino Studies and gender issues. There isn't really anyone on the faculty who does exactly what I'm studying right now but it seemed like a place where no matter which sub-field I ended up gravitating toward I would have someone solid to work with. The feel of the school that came across from the research that I did just seemed like a place that I would enjoy and that would facilitate my work.
  7. well i just did. still says no decision.
  8. yay! haven't gotten into the series yet but I want to.
  9. It's implied. I got sick of waiting for them to do it. i was having a drama queen day yesterday, felt lower than snail stomachs. for some reason crossing off the rest of my schools from my signature made me feel better?
  10. this. all day every day. i'm not actually arrogant (or delusional), just on the old side for a phd applicant and needed to just do the damn thing.
  11. I will see your total idiot and raise you some complete stupidity. In the applications I submitted to Princeton and Rutgers I completely forgot to include the paragraph where I talk about why I want to go there specifically and which professors I want to work with and why....because that's the cool thing to do when applying to top tier programs. I have no idea how I missed that.
  12. i second kamisha as to being no expert (although her advice generally seems spot on) but my advisors told me that my "holy 3" for applications were the writing sample, the SOP, and my LoR. All three wanted to see my writing sample and my SOP before they wrote their letters. They all also asked that if I was changing my focus (how I was selling myself to a particular program) that I give them a head's up so they could do the same in their letters. Looking back I'm seeing that the places that I didn't get into were either the places that are stupid competitive (like, not a fart's chance in a windstorm competitive) or they were places that by the time I got to them, I was exhausted from the quarter and the previous applications and didn't do as graceful a job at telling them why I was a good fit.
  13. um, yes. constantly. i'm having to fight the urge to roll my eyes when well meaning people ask me that multiple times in one day.
  14. bugger ASU. chocolate chip or oatmeal raisin?
  15. that non-expectant expectation...i was feeling it too.
  16. i have never been so eager to be rejected before. i wish they would notify the noes at the same time as the yeses.
  17. for fuck's sake there's princeton.... Edited to add: please people, do yourself a favor and do NOT go back and re-read your SOP. oy vey!
  18. i can add binge eating tamales as this week's coping mechanism...
  19. if you decide to go with UCR and need info about the neighborhood, feel free to message. I grew up not far from there and lived in Riverside for a few years so I know the area fairly well.
  20. oh bugger...there's the first rutgers accept on the board...
  21. so overwhelmed i might just go back to bed so i can avoid it all

  22. this. and it was really making me feel guilty somehow? but that was last week. this week i'm like the hamburglar (showing my age)....i'm just going to take it and run. muahahahhaa
  23. If you don't get any response from Tufts people you could also ask for Brandeis or Harvard since they aren't too far away. Belmont is a lovely little community right between Brandeis and Tufts. One of my sorority sisters grew up there and I've visited a few times. Although...I guess take my advice with a grain of salt b/c I'm from SoCal and a 10-20 min drive is nothing to me. I've seen people in some of the city threads say that living that far from a campus is undesirable.
  24. Thank you for whacking me over the head with that perspective slap. I needed it.
  25. heh, i used up my day's quota just on a few posts in this thread
